Sheppard was serving time at the Ohio Penitentiary after being convicted of second-degree-murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in the slaying of his wife Marilyn at their Bay Village hom on July 4, 1954. The former osteopath's license was indefinitely suspended in 1957 by the State Medical Board. Sheppard was free on federal bond, a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held Wednesday in Akron that his $10,000 bond and his freedom were valid until the court could decide if the U.S. District Court order for his release would stand.
