A random show hosted by Kevin Rose and Tim Ferriss; edited by Glenn McElhose - http://squealingrat.org/random

28 episodes

Greetings from Kunming, China, land of Pu-erh tea! Kevin Rose, Glenn McElhose, and Tim Ferriss are up to no good and having a blast. This video is the first of several to chronicle their experience exploring the incredible world of tea in China, so be prepared for footage no foreigners have seen before. Not into tea? Don’t worry; it’s an inside look at strangers in a strange land, culture shock included. This volume covers their trip preparation, Pu-erh tea cakes, and basic Mandarin language reactivation. There is a separate Random episode coming that includes more on language and textbook analysis. In the afternoon they head to Beijing for a bit of Bladerunner-style fun and exploration of Olympics-inspired modernization.

Topics include: -How to test company or product names using Google AdWords -Kevin’s criteria for both good site names and good angel investments -The role of start-up “advisors” and investors -How Tim chooses companies to work with: overlap, PR options, UI design…

Kevin and Tim are at it again in this 2nd episode of what is still being called “Random”. Have a better name or topic suggestions? This time, they discuss recent discoveries and experimentation; from new internet apps and electronic gadgets to knives and functional MRI (fMRI).

Up to no (coherent) good once again, The Random Show returns. In episode 3, Kevin Rose and Tim Ferriss discuss their top 5 must-read books, how they use them, and who should read them.

This pre-China trip includes the following: - Personal experiences with Y-Combinator, demo days, and pitching new ideas through avenues like YC. - Five things you can do as a new startup to get your ideas, app, or product in front of influencers. - Tweaking your website: per-user metrics, cost per acquisition, lifetime value of the customer, etc.. - The iPhone 3GS, talking some about the new updates and then a short comparison with the Palm Pre. - Learning new languages and reactivating old ones (in this case, Mandarin Chinese). The above list is taken from Glenn McElhose’s blog, where you can also find links to all of the sites and products mentioned in this episode: http://dirtsalad.com/2009/08/12/the-4th-random-episode/

What is the most disgusting or confusing travel experience you’ve ever had? This episode has some educational bits, but it’s focus is on enjoying the not-always-so-smooth experience of travel. Imagine Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations if he didn’t need to edit for cable. This time, they’re not in a library nor on a boat dock fishing for fish; we’re on a street corner in Jinggu, at night... Not for the faint of heart.

It is a happy-hour special of Chinese scams. How did Kevin and Glenn get totally screwed by Chinese “art students”? More important, how do you avoid getting scammed while traveling? This episode lays out one of the most common scams and explains how to spot similar set-ups worldwide… virtualtourist.com

This is a continuation of the Random series. Past episodes include language learning, start-up advice, must-read books, and more. In this episode, filmed on the roof of the Yin bar in Beijing, Kevin Rose and Tim Ferriss (and a little bit of Glenn McElhose) discuss their top-3 favorite travel spots. Details include favorite areas, seasons, things to look for and, occasionally, things to look out for… If someone were only there for one day, what are the 1-3 non-mainstream must-see or must-do picks?

This new, long overdue Random episode covers their personal resolutions (personal, business, physical, and otherwise) as well as favorite recent gifts; both given and received. Topics include: - Chocolate - Powerlifting - Filtering false friends - Funny hats - The art of the decline … and naked ladies.

Episode 9 (really just a clip of episode 10) of The Random Show: Tony Hsieh book review (on Delivering Happiness)

Tim Ferriss and Kevin Rose take it to the streets, the SF Ferry Building (Farmers Market).

This is a truly random episode of Random. What has Kevin learned in his new role as CEO of Digg? Which new books, people, and websites are we finding interesting? From management lessons to language learning (and a critique of Rosetta Stone), this episode meanders all over the place. Tim talks about his week in Amsterdam, the Queen’s Day celebration, The Next Web, the status to his upcoming book and DailyBurn’s business exit. Kevin Rose, Digg Inc. CEO discusses product development, work frustrations, and the new Digg version with Cassandra back-end. The new version includes 3-5 core features, followed by weekly releases.

This long-overdue episode of Random, filmed at Samovar Tea, includes: - Book updates and new book recommendations (including Omnivore’s Dilemma and If This Is A Man : The Truce) - Favorite sites, including design-focused sites - The new Kindle vs. the iPad — pros and cons. - Book title hijinks and red herrings - iFly indoor skydiving video (special thanks to Kent and Travis!) Correction: Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev is credited with the modern Periodic Table of Elements, not Primo Levi, who wrote a book entitled “The Periodic Table.”

2? 13? Our ability to remember episode numbers: negligible. Kevin’s ability to kick Tim's ass on trampolines: priceless. (Kevin left out the fact that he grew up with one. Trixy.) Join us at House of Air, which features dozens of trampolines at different angles, including the “Matrix” room. There is a fair amount of cursing in the video. If you have sensitive ears: earmuffs… Enjoy.

After a long hiatus, here is a new episode of The Random Show! It’s not episode 87, but we couldn’t remember the number. Click here for all of our magical past episodes. In this hang-out discussion, we enjoy a frolicking romp (c’mon, not that kind) through: - Booking media and how-to tips - How to build iPhone apps, how Kevin’s doing it, how to assemble (and pay) a team, and DIY tips - How Kevin’s puppy effectively bites through mic cables - Knives for military or survival use — Tim’s newest and perhaps oldest obsession - 2010′s resolutions and 2011 New Year’s Resolutions…
