Here's the thing. A lot of times your perception of a show, any show, depends heavily on what age you are when you are watching this first. I had great memories of that show when the whole family came together to watch. Different times, eh ? I remembered a great tale of heroism. A tale of rebellion against oppression. Which this very much is. But what I didn't remember is the, at times, misplaced comical relief. Maybe that wasn't intentional or I see it different today. Hence, perception with age. I know Japanese is tough to synchronize and I have watched both, a German and an English version. The German has a lot of borderline dumb dialogue while the English lays a strong emphasis to mimic the japanese speech pattern which sounds a bit weird and forced. Still, this is worth re-visiting. It's good and honest entertainment. A journey back to classic TV land where you didn't look for plot holes and logical errors but rather sit back and enjoy. As mentioned, different times.
