The X-Files is at it's best when it's not dealing with religion, unexplainable events, and Scully being abducted or vulnerable, because we've sure had a lot of those episodes.
And this episode has all those things...
Well maybe not religion, but i will chalk up the contrivance of Scully finding Emily and the phantom phone call as something to do with religion. It was all "fated" and "prophecised" Whatever.
Ugh.
In one earlier episode it was referenced how what happened to the abudctee women made them infertile, and their ovum were took. This episode picks up that "thread" and runs with it, showing Scully's vulnerability about being infertile and seeming to desperately want a child, even though she's only 30, in the middle of her career, and often involved in many dangerous, and also involved in dangerous conspiracies involving secret groups of the government and private groups, and even possibly aliens. Yes, it's the perfect time to want a child and reflect on not being able to have them.
And then further, she actively goes through in wanting to adopt Emily, this before she found out Emily was her daughter.
It is a legitimate reason that she's rethinking things because of the cancer experience she went through, and what kind of life she wants to live, but it's not even close to enough to explain the plot and character behavior this episode.
Random UNEXPLAINABLE VAGUE PHANTOM phone call.

Ugh.
It's not even a plausible explanation, it was a literal phantom unexplainable phone call, twice.
Scully just happened to find Emily, and there just happened to be a crime that happened there, and Scully happened to eventually get to the truth of it all. Why was it said that the adopted mother of Emily happened to look exactly like Melissa? We are to suppose Scully was just imagining things then.
And Emily turns out to be Scully's daughter.
Ugh...
X files, why do you do these things? I won't fall for your melodrama.
Okay maybe i will a bit. I'm not a cold emotionless robot. I care about Scully, but i won't entirely fall for melodrama, especially when it's not done well enough.
I saw a joke comment once that the writers are obsessed with Scully's womb.
Are we supposed to believe Scully is going to have a daughter to care for from now on in the show? With how much medical care she needs? Strap in everyone, we're in for more melodrama.
Ugh.
I really love Mulder as a character and David Duchovny as an actor, but this is a refreshing and kinda soothing episode without him. I‘m really looking forward to the next episode, the ending of this one was very unexpected – I even was at a point, where I thought that Emily was Melissa, but oh well. That would have been too Mulderish. :D
Surprise! Scully has a daughter. She never gave birth to her, the girl was an offspring of Scully's abduction.

Nice side-off Christmas episode where we get to know a little more about Skully and her family, and a sad one too. Mulder is missing in this one though. That ending tho~!
