I somehow forgot until this episode how unscrupulous CSM could be. I think I‘ve reached the point of episodes I‘ve seen in the past. I can‘t remember that almost the whole syndicate got burned. I‘m a bit shocked but looking forward to the next core episodes.
...because of course it's a two-parter. If you combined all the details from the "mythos" episodes, removing all the contradictory and duplicate information, it could be fit into a single episode with room to spare. They should've never opened that door - but it seems that there was a sole person's ego that had to be sated.
More answers about project purity/alien blood/virus, and that Bill Mulder finally came around to the idea of giving up their children to the aliens as an intial step towards getting an alien fetus to then create alien human hybrids. Since Bill Mulder was late on coming around, the syndicate or the aliens then abducted Samantha from the home.
Bill Mulder also had the idea of using the alien blood to try and create a vaccine to save everyone.
That Spender's mother is now the perfect alien human hybrid, and when the aliens learn of a hybrid or perfect hybrid, that's the time to colonize apparently.
The thing is though, we've had alien human hybrids in the past and they were fine weren't they? Like at the end of season 1? The clones? Or were they just clones? What about in season 2? Idk.
It's all a bit fuzzy, but i am still interested. It feels like we're getting some interesting answers to some questions but it's all adding to the convolution. I guess this is some of the best things we can hope for to make things clearer and have a direction to follow, but as i've said before, these episodes do add to the Samantha convolution.
Mulder how can you not suspect Diana when cancer man came right to her door? Unless he's playing her.
I liked the long and substantial conversation between Cancer Man and Mulder.
Huge advancement in the plot. All of the syndicate except for Cancer Man are dead. The alien rebels saved humanity.
It's interesting cancer man has been trying to accelerate colonization, rather than entertain any notions of resistance. Though the syndicate we learn did try to stall the aliens by trying to create a vaccine. There's also Cancer Man's motives in trying to save Cassandra and Jeffrey, though he still killed Jeffrey in the end. I knew it was coming and it still shocked me when it happened. It is a twist for sure, but i don't know if cancer man would actually do that.
Plus i feel like there could've been a lot more to do with Jeffrey's character in the future. There's also that he could be Mulder's half brother. But in the episodes they say a lot about Bill Mulder being Mulder's father (omg i forgot his first name -google search- oh yeah Fox lol), so i guess they're trying to establish that firmly and move more away from the idea of cancer man being Mulder's actual father.
I mean what is cancer man even really fighting for anymore? The syndicate is all dead except for him, and he only run the intelligence and/or assassination part. The rebels won and will continue trying to stop the alien colonization, so why not finally make an alliance with them or just stop? And resist or just stop, because what are you fighting for anymore or what are you trying to cover up? To stop people learning about aliens? And your research base in antarctica is gone, Mulder and Scully are back on the x files i presume, and will be working to uncover the conspiracies and expose the alien threat to the world. Why kill Jeffrey? Your own son? I guess cancer man is going to still try and stick to the plan of, well, i don't really know. It was said in the episodes that because the main scientist died that they can no longer do a alien human hybrid again or a perfect kind of one like Cassandra, so what's the plan? Still try and create hyrbrids? While also working on vaccine? (but what about that woman who they tested the vaccine on and it worked?) and cover up aliens until the scheduled date of colonization or if it happens beforehand? I'm confused. Surprisingly i'm still invested even though it's all convoluted. It's helped with this two parter being good episodes, riveting and with substantial answers and plot developments.
Well I guess I was right about her being from the movie, ALIEN. And she was impregnated in that movie by the Xenomorph, so it all makes sense now..

Finally, this episode solidified my understanding of the mythology. It's taken this long but the exposition cram sessions provided by this and the previous episode ("Two Fathers") finally set things straight for me. Not the most entertaining episode, but definitely critical to understanding the mess of details associated with the previous seasons.
Secondary characters in this episode: Kersh, CSM, Agent Spender, Diana, Krycek, Bill Mulder, Lone Gunmen, Syndicate, Cassandra, Marita Covarrubius
