Aloha YouTubers, I am The Backyard Scientist! I like to make videos on all the crazy stuff I do. From exploding arrows, to making instruments, molten aluminum to science/chemistry experiments - I do it so you don't have to! I'm always thinking of more stuff to do, if you have an idea, id love to hear it! Almost everything I do can be considered dangerous!! If you insist on trying my videos at home, just remember- if you play with fire, you're going to get burned. Electricity is deadly. Be safe guys :)

Copper chloride acts as a catalyst decomposing the hydrogen peroxide. May also form copper oxychloride copper I oxide, and copper I chloride

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a catalyst oxidizing the copper. This is a very exothermic reaction and it can easily boil over if you don't keep an eye on it.

A very very very saturated solution. The whole solution crystallized and broke my glass! Dye from highlighter.

Creating zinc chloride, and hydrogen gas. Just a warning don't put your face close like I did! I got a couple drops of hydrochloric acid on my face from the bubbles. I was wearing glasses but scary.

DIY chloroform, an easy preparation! watch my other video on how to synthesize it. Just a video showing the amount of chloroform i made, i was only using a 2.5 percent concentration of sodium hypochlorite that's why the yield is low. You can see bubbles of co2 from phosgene degrade.

Yes it hurts..

Reacting copper sulphate solution with ammonia hydroxide. If you do not want copper hydroxide use an excess of ammonia.

It failed because the bottle was clear and the wine was light color they had no chance to absorb energy from the Sun.

Just produces O2, Cl2, and HCl gasses. A lot of it. I only used 5 grams TCCA.

Ghetto style. 2 gallons 10% sodium hypochlorate and 156ml acetone. Phosgene will not be a problem if you stabilize with a layer of water. Decomposes into CO2.

Easy DIY lamp! Hack an old lightbulb into a alcohol lamp with a green flame with only denatured alcohol and boric acid! This was my very first video! Recrystallize in enough methanol to dissolve, then place in refrigerator for large crystals (4 days) OR freezer for smaller (4-8 hours). do multiple smaller pulls. 90ml acetone 10ml chloroform 1-2gm NaOH Yield~ 4gm Please note this is not safe for consumption. It may contain small amounts of un reacted chemicals or many possible side products.

Saw another user with this design, my Sister and I tried it out this afternoon. It's not perfect, and the flame circulation could be improved, but it is easy to use without constant attention.

Sorry little sister! 46" Fresnel lens from rear projection tv. Total time 5 minutes.

Sorry about the audio guys, This was way back when i was making videos completely on my cellphone! I used 90% methanol 10% h20 as a solvent. That final product was 10ml of capsaicin oil, I put some on a toothpick and it burned my lips for 20 minutes D: What else can i do with this interesting piece of equipment?

In this video we make electric matches to safely detonate our experiments. You should aim for a 95-5% ratio of your propellent to nitrocellulose (pingpong balls). a pingpong ball weighs 2g, so use about 50g of powder. We used half that and it works great. The steel wool is sensitive enough to glow red hot through 100ft of wire with a battery.

2013x20 Black powder cannon tests

  • 2013-06-21T04:00:00Z1m

We made a cannon that fires water bottles. Why you ask? Why not!?! Using 1-2 ounces of blackpowder, and 10-16oz of water. If we filled the bottles up all the way they exploded :/

This is our first attempt at exploding arrows, we probably used a half ounce of black powder in the arrow itself. It was a carbon arrow. We removed the tip and replaced it with a large shotgun primer. I saw these first in the anarchists cookbook about 15 years ago. The bang was rather satisfying.. probably doing it again soon!

This cannon was pretty extreme. It shot a golf ball at speeds approaching the speed of sound and has some SERIOUS power. We typically used around 1 ounce of powder charge, enough to propel the ball clear through a bucket, and into the dirt. Electrical ignition was not bothered with, used long fuses instead. Your right Chemcam, it is a PITA :P

lightbulb at 20'' 700w magnatron I will upload a video once I have enough gadgets to fry!

Easy DIY chemistry project, great for science fairs because its a great demonstration! This is great for the chemistry beginner. I used 150ml of a 10% ammonia solution and 50ml of 30% HCl After they reacted, i boiled it down, and dried it in the oven. It tastes very salty/tart!

I made a mistake. Schweizer's reagent is produced by copper hydroxide, then a excess of ammonia. not just coppersulfate with ammonia, thats just Tetramminecopper(II) sulfate. oops :)

Hey guys, in this video I show you how I built my microwave gun, also known as a HERF gun. I take a magnetron out of the oven and connect it to a waveguide. The results were more than I expected! FIRST- Microwaves are not "dangerous". They do not have enough energy to damage DNA and cause cancer. The only risk is thermal burns, which are unlikely because you are 70% water and have a high heat capacity. Cataracts may happen if you stare into the beam, and there is a good chance you will fry your

For more information and reaction mechanisms, look at the link below. www.sciencemadness.org/talk/files.php?pid=75149&aid=1734‎ PEG is chosen as a hydraulic brake fluid for its very high boiling point. Usually over 400f. So this is a very exothermic reaction! Something I noticed. If the hypochlorite or brake fluid contains an appreciable amount of water you will not get a fire, instead you will get a very thick white smoke that is probably toxic.

And now for a break in our scheduled programming.. just had to share too fun!

Enjoy! Question, comments? So i was wrong on my math. 6grams to 4grams is wrong and im stupid ;) HClO3 pointed out that the correct stochiometry would be 68g ammonia with 180g of formaldehyde.

In this video i salvage an old photo copier for some interesting parts. Their is a nice high voltage transformer, I will be using the high voltage supply for my Marx generator in an upcoming video. I also got some nice mirrors, and a nice macro-lens for my cellphone.

I show how to make the marquis reagent from formaldehyde and sulfuric acid, and preform tests on modifinil, promethazine, tizanidine, ritilin (methylphenidate), acetominiphen, and aspirin.

Using a 200w induction heater to heat a bolt, then dropping it into liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen starts leaking and science quickly devolves into shenanigans :)

Used my angle grinder, and my new dremel to make a knife. sorry its been awhile, and sorry if i miss your comments!

Hey guys, In this video I use liquid propane as an analogue to liquid nitrogen. Its easy, I just invert a propane cylinder and the propane comes out a a liquid. Not everybody has the equipment to melt aluminum, but pewters low melting point makes metal-casting available to everybody! Its melting point is so low, you can melt it in your kitchen. Pewter is mostly tin, with a little bit of antimony and copper. Its use dates all the way back to the ancient Egyptians, but you don't need to rob graves for it. Its a common item to find in thrift shops! Cups, pitchers, bowls, plates, and candle-sticks can all be made out of pewter. Buying it at a thrift store

Pouring molten aluminum in a watermelon turned out to be really popular, So I poured aluminum in two more melons, honeydew and cantaloupe. It turned out really cool, giving a perfect cast of the inside of a melon. It looked just like a hand grenade! https://www.facebook.com/TheBackyardScientistOfficial

I was on Reddit yesterday, and I saw a cool GIF on r/woahdude. It looked so cool I had to do it. Also people were debating on how fast the ball was really spinning, and I had to find out for myself so I grabbed my camera that can shoot up to 1000fps. The original poster estimated the speed at 10,000 rpm, but the ball was really spinning 30,000 rpm in my experiments!

What happens when you fill a ping pong ball with extremely flammable propane, then light it on fire? Does it spin really fast, or make a cool noise, or explode? The answer is yes! Last video, I made a mistake. I forgot to set one of these on fire! Well thats kinda my thing, so today I set out to fill a pingpong ball with propane and set it on fire. 2015x24 Steel Wool on a DRONE

  • 2015-10-29T04:00:00Z1m

You have probably heard of steel wool before. You can burn it and swing it around to create amazing sparks and effects. I thought it would be fun to attach steel wool to a drone and fly it around a beach at night. It turned our really cool. I also attached sparklers to the drone and flew it around. Sparklers last way longer than steel wool, and im sure everybody on the beach was impressed as It flew down the shore.

The inside of a pumpkin has a pretty interesting geometry. I had the idea to cast the inside to see what it looks like, but the inside of the pumpkin is very fragile and the 1000 degree aluminum pretty much destroys it as soon as it comes in contact with the soft flesh. I thought freezing the pumpkin would provide more structural support, so I froze the pumpkin from the inside out with liquid nitrogen. My thermometer can only measure to -36f (-38c), and the pumpkin was colder than that. Liquid

https://www.facebook.com/TheBackyardScientistOfficial Today I put the Leidenfrost effect to the test! Im trying out a great question from somebody on my facebook page. He wanted to know if a hot object will fall faster than a cold object through water. I set up my fishtank and dropped red-hot steel balls through water to see if they fall faster. Today I make a REAL hoverboard out of dry ice! It doesn't lift you high into the air like back to the future, but it perfectly emulates the feeling! 2016x19 DIY Rocket Powered Plane!

Go to http://TheGreatCoursesPlus.com/Backyard for your free trial today! Ive always wanted to attach rocket engines to a styrofoam plane, so I went to the hobby shop and bought all kinds of rocket engines! They come in sizes A, B, C, D, and E. Each step up is 2x as powerfull as the last. I also made my own F class sugar rockets based on Grant Thompsons design, but I must have done something wrong because they kept exploding :( Music: Halcyon Days- Mokhov

I was planning on just making a silly 'check this out' video, but people on my facebook page got me thinking! Its still a silly video, but now contains a pinch of science.. kinda ;) looks dangerous, but its not. Nothing in the vicinity is particularly flammable, and i have tall ceilings. The high voltage transformer is more dangerous! I don't think the color has anything to do with what goes off first like some people thought, they all blow up too quickly for that to come into play.

It was about time To make this video! p.s. Im going to blow up a pumpkin tomorrow :) Jace & Luke - My neighbors YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1jTHBn6rZO7YN1RpyjFAmw/videos Website - http://TheBackyardScient.ist Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/backyardscientistofficial/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/ChemicalKevy Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheBackyardScientistOfficial/

This is what happens when you ignore the warnings on a Lithium (LiPo) Battery. First I tried Disassembling the battery to learn about it. Then I tried shocking the battery with a tesla coil. Surprisingly that did not work, so I connected it to a car battery to overcharge it and it worked great. Of course, by working great i mean it caught on fire. Finally I incinerated the battery with a 30W infrared laser in a fishtank filled with 100% pure oxygen.
