Tottering Towers is the stately home of the 43rd Duke of Tottering. It will be found (as any good guide-book won't tell you) in the village of Tottering Sideways near Sumweir-on-Thames The Duke, though a brilliant inventor of such things as fishing bicycles and talking suits of armour, cannot invent a way to keep himself out of debt. Then two teenagers, the Duke's American cousin, Daffy, and Dick, his housekeeper's nephew, arrive at the Towers. They plan to help the old boy ... with hilarious results.

Dick and Daffy prepare plans for bringing the crowds to Tottering Towers but the Duke is more interested in a stair with a nasty case of termites. Meanwhile Gabbige, the butler, serves visitors with a kick to it, and Daffy begins to think she is seeing things, but at least she doesn't lose her head, which is more than can be said for the Tottering Towers 'ghost'!
