In episode one, 72-year-old David Guest is rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital after a road traffic accident. Eye witnesses say he was slumped over the wheel of his car as it crashed into the front of oncoming traffic. The emergency team soon discover that David has what is known as a triple A ruptured aneurism. Twenty-five minutes after arriving into hospital, David is prepped for an emergency operation as medical staff fight to save his life. The operation he faces is hugely high risk, and the staff go about contacting David’s family members. It is the middle of the night when broadcaster Ronan Collins is brought into Beaumont Hospital in need of immediate attention. Just as he was about to go on stage, Ronan’s legs suddenly became completely weak. The neuro trauma team scan his body and discover that he needs emergency surgery. In Tallaght Hospital, a man has been rushed in after he was stabbed multiple times, leaving him with life threatening injuries. He tells the doctors that he saw blood in his urine, so doctors carry out urgent scans to check for internal damage to his organs. Meanwhile, in the Mater Hospital, 31-year-old Milan Hosek is being treated in the emergency department after a violent attack in the city centre has left him missing part of his ear, which he brought with him to the hospital in the hope that doctors will be able to re-attach it. In the Mater 75-year-old Michael Murphy is at risk of potential organ damage after near drowning incident on Dollymount Strand. A daily swimmer at the beach, Michael got swept away in a strong current and was rescued by coast guards. Doctors monitor him and find out that he has inhaled a lot of water and his oxygen levels are dangerously low. Back at St. Vincent’s hospital 31-year-old Gaelic footballer Anne-Marie Murphy is brought in by her fiancé. They were both playing in the semi final of the Dublin Ladies Senior Championship when the game was abandoned after a clash and fall left Anne-

In episode two we meet Anne Malone, a grandmother and mother-of-five in the Resus area of St Vincent’s Hospital. Less than an hour ago she tripped while leaving the hairdressers, falling down three steps and injuring herself badly. She has a broken wrist and hip. Anne’s husband, her daughter and son wait anxiously for news. They have been here before, two years ago when Anne’s husband had a brain hemorrhage, so they know that things must be serious. Consultant Nigel Salter comes in to visit. He explains the seriousness of the injuries and the need to get her into an operating theatre within the next 12 hours for a ‘half hip replacement’. Meanwhile 85-year-old Ted Kennelly is referred to the Mater Hospital after a scan on his neck reveals he has a ‘peg’ fracture on his spine. If his spine isn’t stabilised as soon as possible Ted will become paralysed as the bones in his neck are now pressing dangerously on his spinal chord. Ted is visited by his wife Marion, two of their daughters and grandson – they are apprehensive about the surgery but know it must be done. Back at the Mater Emergency Department Specialist Registrar Rory Whelan treats David Keating who has been rushed to hospital after a house fire in Dublin. With his airway rapidly closing over, Rory must treat David quickly before his throats swells. Once David is intubated the medical team discover dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in his blood from the smoke. They urgently administer two antidotes before rushing David to CT to check if his brain & lungs has been affected by the smoke. Peter Priestly is brought to St Vincent’s Emergency Department after dislocating his shoulder while mountain biking with his friend. The team work to put his shoulder back into place. Finally, 80-year-old Paudie Stafford is rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital after suffering a massive seizure at his nursing home. Professor John Ryan and his team stabilise Paudie who suffers with dementia. H

In episode three, we meet 29-year-old John Francis, a father-of-two from Athlone. John has been transferred to the Mater for spinal surgery after falling 20 feet onto a concrete floor, breaking his back. Without surgery, John’s back would collapse and he would be left paralysed. Eoin O’Gorman arrives to Beaumont Hospital after doctors at Naas General Hospital discovered a bleed on his brain. It has left him barely able to use the right side of his body. Surgeons will have to bore two holes in Eoin’s skull to release the pressure on his brain; a procedure that can have serious risks. Eoin’s wife Margaret informs the head consultant Mr Moshen Javadpour that if Eoin goes into cardiac arrest, he does not want him to be resuscitated. She waits anxiously for news of how Eoin’s surgery is going. Meanwhile, 30-year-old Brazilian man Wagner Dantas collided with a bin lorry while cycling through Dublin and has been rushed into the Mater Hospital. He is bleeding from his face and has no memory of the accident. Medical staff immediately grow concerned about a possible head injury. Retired forestry professor Máirtín Mac Siúrtáin is rushed to St. Vincent’s Emergency Department after getting both of his hands caught in his tractor while trying to fell a tree. Soon after arriving in Vincent’s the emergency consultant discovers that Máirtín’s heart rate is unusually high. This could be a sign of an underlying serious heart condition, and one that will need immediate action. In St. Vincent’s 75-year-old Mahon Murphy is rushed in after he fell 15-foot from a ladder in his garden directly onto concrete. Although Mahon’s main concern is his shoulder, the emergency team remain concerned about any possible internal organ damage. A collision with a car has left motor bike enthusiast Colin with a severely broken hip and socket. After being stabilised at St. James Hospital he is transferred to Tallaght Hospital for emergency surgery if doctors are to

In episode four we meet father-of-two, John Walsh on the morning of a very important operation to remove extremely rare tumors from his spine. Forty people around the world have been diagnosed with the type of tumors that John has, and of them, John is the only remaining survivor. Consultant David O’Brien tells John that it is a dangerous procedure, but if they don’t take action John will be paralysed from the waist down. Meanwhile in Tallaght Hospital, Polish native Marcin is rushed in after an accident has left him with very deep cuts to his face. Marcin has a bad break to his elbow which will require surgery but it is the deep lacerations on his face that are causing doctors concern. They must urgently get a CT scan of his brain to ensure there has been no serious damage. After a visit to her GP for dizziness, amateur photographer Iris Fogarty arrives in Beaumont Hospital to find out that she has an aneurysm. Doctors describe her as a ‘ticking timebomb’ – she must have urgent surgery to have the aneurysm clipped, as it could burst at any moment, having fatal consequences. In the Mater Brazilian native Lidiane Luna is rushed in after badly breaking her leg after falling down the stairs at home. Doctors work to put a cast on her leg prior to surgery to fix the break in the bone. Construction worker Vasile Purcaru is rushed to St Vincent’s Emergency Department after falling down a manhole while on a site. He is in a lot of pain as the medical team rush around him to get it under control. It is clear that his right leg is badly broken.
