On June 23, it was reported that Aldo suffered a rib fracture and could pull out of the bout in light of the injury.A day later, the UFC received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer such injury. Following a review of the scans, it was determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training. Aldo had expressed that he had every intention of fighting. Despite that, the UFC announced a contingency plan that would have Chad Mendes face McGregor for the interim championship in the event that Aldo could not compete. On June 30, it was confirmed that Aldo indeed pulled out of the bout and that the interim championship bout would take place at this event. UFC president Dana White said the reason for the interim title, in this case, had to do with Aldo's history of pulling out of title fights, despite having defended it only 9 months earlier at UFC 179. The bout remained the event headliner. On July 1, photographs of Aldo's scans were released and indicated that he had indeed suffered a fractured rib. On July 10, White claimed that Aldo did not have a broken rib as "every x-ray he sent out was of an old injury". He reaffirmed that Aldo had a "bruised rib and cartilage" and that the biggest problem was the weight cutting process being complicated by the injury.

23x19 UFC 200: Tate vs. Nunes

  • 2016-07-10T00:00:00Z2h

In the new main event at UFC 200: Tate vs. Nunes, UFC Women's Bantamweight champion Miesha Tate (18-5 MMA; 5-2 UFC) faces challenger Amanda Nunes (12-4 MMA; 5-1 UFC) in a five round world title fight. The UFC rankings have Nunes as the #4 contender at Bantamweight; Tate interestingly is the only UFC champion not ranked at pound for pound. UFC 200: Tate vs. Nunes airs live from Las Vegas this Saturday, July 9.

This fight was promoted to main event status just two days ago, after Jon Jones failed a drug test and Jones vs. Cormier II was cancelled. At its core, this is your classic striker vs. grappler match-up - one of the oldest battles in the history of MMA. Champion Tate is more of the grappler, with Nunes winning more frequently via strikes. Of course, both are well rounded fighters, so Tate has a striking game herself, while Nunes has a high profile sub win over Sara McMann. Still, this one is likely to be determined by who decides where the fight takes place.

The event had a $10,700,000 gate, which broke the record for a mixed martial arts event in the United States. The final attendance was 18,202, a record for Nevada, which had hosted 104 prior UFC events. It was the final UFC event under Zuffa ownership, which began in January 2001. Brock Lesnar was paid a $2.5 million fight purse, breaking Conor McGregor's record from UFC 196 by $1.5 million.

The event was headlined by a UFC Lightweight Championship bout between then champion Eddie Alvarez and UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor. This was the second time in UFC history that champions in different divisions fought for the same title.
