The Warplane has evolved over nearly a century to become what it is today. This is the story of how - through life-and-death necessity, invention, ingenuity and sheer hard work that technology evolved. WARPLANE is not a history of every plane but rather a look at the major stepping stones that changed military aviation.

1x01 Airplane To Air Force

  • no air date50m

Aerial combat technology has developed rapidly and definitively. War planes were just as vital over the trenches of France in 1914 as they were over the deserts of the Middle East in 2003.

As the military importance of warplanes grew during WWII, so did demand on its bomb delivery capacity. Dramatically improved aerodynamics led to more sophisticated weapons and communication systems.

1x03 Jet Age

  • no air date50m

The jet engine was a defining piece of mid 20th century technology that blurred the distinction between the roles of fighters, bombers, and attack helicopters. Warfare would never be the same again.

1x04 The Age Of Stealth

  • no air date50m

The latest warplane, the F-22 Raptor, can fly for long periods, break the speed of sound, strike and be gone in a second. Almost invisible to radar, it promises a stealthy victory without casualties.

The airplane was born of conflict and shaped by war. The evolution of bomb delivery systems and their vulnerability to fast-evolving fighter technology provided one of the key subplots of World War II. As the military importance of the warplane grew however, so did demands on its performance. Demands that would lead to dramatically improved aerodynamics, as streamlining rid the plane of its primitive structure and introduced sophisticated communications that would allow the commanders to wield the mighty weapon of air power with devastating effect.
