They simply nailed it. What a crazy episode. I really love the feeling of this season, reminds me of season 1-3. It was nice to go back to the Thule plot. It was also good to see Aaron aka Dean's gay thing. So cool. And killing Hitler! Seriously! It took the writers long enough to carry out this crazy idea. The best quote of the episode "Dude, you killed Hitler. Yeah. Awesome" and his facial expression. So proud. He truly deserves some pie.
It has to be the end of the world. Dean rejecting pie. PIE. I don't know what's more surprising, the fact that Dean rejected it or that Sam didn't forget about it. Clumpsy Dean is always at his finest, like being like a bull in a China shop. I couldn't stop laughing. I love this scene. And what about his disappointment when he couldn't use his grenade launcher and Sam said, "Don't worry. I'll happen". What better moment to use it that to fight Nazi Zombie Necromancers, Sam? You better keep your word, Moose.
That guy did a good job at portraying Hitler as a funny little assclown (the new assbutt). And his henchmen's faces... they were so freaking confused. That little Hitler run, though, lmao. It will always be a thing. I would've liked him to stay a little bit longer. He was too much fun, and that hilarious personality. Too soon to get rid of him. And, I thought I would never say that outloud. I cracked up and actually feel bad about it. Everything was hilarious with him. Like the dogs. "I love doggies, woof woof". I couldn't stop laughing. Apparently, after 71 years, Hitler lost his mind. And the way he died, protecting his app phone. He just wanted to use Twitter.
Dean saying "I killed Hitler" is the new "I'm Batman". I would like him to mention it at random times. I bet they keep a record of all the creatures they've killed and make bets with it. Like, Lucifer, checked, Hitler, checked.
At the end I was expecting Mr Ketch go appear and kill Ellie. I don't know what they would do with Hitler's bloodline.
"Sara and Jess not twins but are one singular person in a split personality. There are TONS of clues to this.
1) The hair color is an obvious choice. It plays a role later, but to tell the difference, we see two dramatic changes. Could just be cinematic ease, however it does play a role later.
2) She always says that when her sister makes bad choices, she has to come and save her. Sara is the passive personality, and "comes forward" during times of high stress or trauma. This split originated during the trauma of the parents murder/ suicide. Sara said she never saw the scene, so when Jess faces that sadness it sparks Sara to the rescue as Sara can hide behind the idea that she never saw the trauma. One very specific case of this is the second suicide attempt. Sara said she had not heard from Jess and could not reach her on the phone, so she had 911 check on her. You call 911 locally. You do not call it across states, so Sara called 911 when Jess took the pills to save her. Another thing is the use of pills, which someone dealing with this level of scarring would have high amounts of medication, like the ones seen in her bag. If we were to look closely at the pills, I bet there would be heavy medications for schizophrenia.
3) When Sara tells Rob that she needs to go save Jess, Rob looks like he has dealt with this before. What he sees is that Jess has relapsed into Sara, and is doing his best to keep her grounded. By "sleeping on it," he is trying to buy time for Jess to take over, but in the morning she has all ready left. One small aspect is we never see her in a plane, only in an apartment and then in Japan. Jess was actually in Japan teaching when she had a snap, and Rob did not have to fly to catch up to her. It may even be possible that Rob is her psychiatrist, and the apartment was his office. More on him later.
4) When she dreams about Jess in a tent, you see two silhouettes, but when she opens only 1 person is in the tent, which is Jess.
5) Sara knew exactly which direction Jess' tent is in. We never see the two together ever, except in pictures or during the split event. Jess was lost for 5 days, yet when she runs to the rescue party at the end she was at her tent.
6) When Sara searches her apartment, she looks at all of the hair products (which I bet hair dye is one of them)
7) When she sees a picture of Jess on Aiden's phone, it was actually a picture of her he had taken for the article. She does not recognize it is her because she views herself as blonde, but Jess is the real person so any picture would be of Jess and not of her perception of blonde hair.
8) The Sara Teasdale poem
"And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone."
Translation: No one knows about her splits warring for control, and no one will care about the Sara's death as she is not real. Neither bird or tree relates to the forest gaining another spirit upon the shedding of the sadness. When she awakes at dawn, she barely knows the war took place as she never acknowledged she was split, but she does scarcely know she is gone.
9) When she explains the twin link, its a sound or buzz, and when the other is dead, it is silent. That is the quiet in her head after the split no longer occupies her subconsciousness. In this case, both personalities have a reality, but only one exists. The noise is the presence of the other personality in her subconscious.
10) When Jess comes out of the forest, Rob says "Sara?" They have opposite hair, so he should recognize that it is Jess. When she says nothing, he changes the name to Jess. She then answers. To further this, he strongly asks her if she has seen Sara. Knowing Sara is the trauma, he needs to know if Jess has regained control. When she says she is still in the forest, Rob knows it may mean Sara has been eliminated from Jess. She also says "she came to save me," which I think is when she realizes that Sara took control. More than likely, Jess understands their is a Sara, but is unable to control when she takes over.
So, to sum up the story. Jess moves to Japan and takes on a job as a teacher, but has been dealing with this mental health and trauma from the child's view of the horror. She knows the forest is where people "find themselves" and can "face their sadness." She had a tent, brought along reading material as she is their for a walkabout to finally face her trauma. During this, Sara takes over while she is in the forest. Two things could happen here. Since the story is told from Sara's view, most of the Sara adventure is just a completely false reality happening while Jess is in the woods, or Sara completely takes over, changes clothes (why Jess' clothes are hanging in the woods) and goes back to her psychiatrist in which she believes she is married to. Then the story goes as we follow Sara through backtracking to Jess. Jess said she was lost for 5 days, meaning she was in the woods for 5 days, but that is also how long we have followed Sara.
The story comes to an end in the ranger's cabin when she kills Aiden, and then is faced with the basement scene. She protects Jess from seeing the scene, telling her to not look, but then Sara sees the scene. Sara would not know what this looks like, as she said she never saw it but the scene was obvious to her. This is where Sara is forced to face the fact that she saw the horrible scene, and cannot hide between a split that is a witness to it and one that is safe from it. She then finally, once and for all, faces it, by literally asking her dad why, and then cutting him away from her. This of course is the suicide of Sara, but it is the killing of the split, leaving Sara to die in the basement where she was created. After the suicide, Jess awakens, and both can be seen running parallel to each other, indicating the return of control by Jess. This is the moment where they pass each other in the main control of Jess. Jess comes forward as Sara is running, causing Jess to run. She eventually emerges from the forest, having faced her trauma, and left behind a soul for the forest to keep. The Yuri are the remnants of the sadness left in the forest by the people who faced their sadness, regardless of suicide or success.
Nichi could not handle the sadness of losing someone under his guide, and this is why he is now susceptible to seeing the spirits, and Sara comes for him in the end."
And Mark freaking Pellegrino! I'm not gonna hide it, I'm in love with this guy. He flexing his wings and winking, man. I loved that shot. He plays Lucifer so convincingly and that scene with Crowley mimicking a chicken was incredibly funny. His last shot, though, straight outta "The Lion King". Now I can't stop picturing Lucifer as Mufasa. That ending scene in the top of the mountain looked so bizarre and weird. I don't recall having seen a shot like that previously.
Luci to Babifer: "Everything the light touches is our Kingdom".
Babifer: "But what's that shadow place?"
Luci: "That's purgatory my nephilim. You must never go there"
I'm ridiculously excited because Lucifer finally changed Nick's freaking clothes! And it only took him 7 years! (minus his stay in the cage). I'm not sure how to feel about that. It's gonna be weird not to picture him in his usual clothes but I'm so excited for Lucifer investing in fashion. Loved his new outfit btw.
Mary being brainwashed is a bit cliché and no wonder, she'll never hurt the boys. But why didn't she just shoot Ketch in the face? See Mary, none of this would've happened if you had just listened to the boys. Never trust a Campbell is my motto in life.
Two hunters and a posh are trapped in a bunker. She helps them breaking out. Then, she gets a shot at the face. I'm ready for it. Just insult her and call her posh, fortunately, she'll just get offended by it and leave you alone.
The episode was wonderfully directed and the lightning scheme made the episode visually appealing. Cinematography was on point a.d the whole episode was esthetically a pleasure to watch. I've always loved the way they light Hell and today they didn't disappoint in that sense. And the score was marvellous. I really loved that reversed and creepy off-line version of Dean's Theme in that Mary-Ketch scene in the car. It felt so fitting.
Alexander Calvert is doing such a good job at being creepy. That smirk he gave to the sheriff was creepy as hell. I love it. The nature vs nurture debate will always be on the table but I'm pretty sure Jack is a blank state. Neither inherently good nor evil. It all depends on who's influencing you. Truth is he's Lucifer's kid and as such, has evil genes, but with a good role model, he'll be good.
"My father is Castiel". I certainly expected it but hot damn, the way he said it melted my heart. I'm absolutely in love with the fact that Jack's idea of a father is Cas. Kelly was such a nobel character and their bonding in the episode "The Future" was the key.
Is it just me or is Alexander Calvert like the perfect actor for Jack? He can actually be pretty creepy but at the same time tender, lovely and so awkward. Are we entirely sure he's not Cas' son? He had that exact same squinty and confused look Cas has.
"I like nougat", lol. Damn it Jack! I love you already. I love that Jack, a Nephilim, the son of Lucifer, one of the most powerful beings there could ever be uses his powers to steal candy. Btw, when he said "I'm hungry" I thought the writers were going to go full on Amara there. Luckily, they didn't.
That lady sheriff was absolutely awesome. Is she going to be the new Jody once she moves on to Wayward Sisters? I wouldn't mind that tbh. We keep on with the female sheriff supernatural tradition.
That drunk angel, though. She kinda confused me. I thought she got possessed after the boys left but her constant hatred on Becky made me doubt. The actress was on point and the character was so charismatic. It's a pity she's gone but she played her purpose and she was sassy as hell. Btw angels do seem to be badass again, in a demon way. She planted the seed on Dean's mind that Jack can do anything, including bring Cas back.
Nothing else Matters. YESSSS! I got the goosebumps. What a song to start season 13. That "The road so far" was amazing. And the new title card is sick. I loved it.
I think this may be one of the best season premiere we've ever had along with season 4 (guilty pleasure). Strong, solid, heartbreaking and don't get me started on the cinematography. That was just beyond amazing. The shots were perfect, the music was on point and that scene at the beginning in the Impala in terms of shots and cinematography was absolutely outstanding.
That shot of Sam, Dean, and Jack lighting up the funeral pyre and watching Cas and Kelly burn from behind while that music was playing was sick. I don't know who directed the episode (gonna check it when I'm done with this) but hot damn, that was a beautifully shot episode. And the music throughout the hunter's funeral was pretty good and certainly helped push emotions and acting to a whole new level. I need to know that score. It's absolutely beautiful.
As usual, SPN is full of comedy and heartbreak when you least expect it. After last season's finale, I expected the premiere to be hard and heartbreaking, and boy, was I right. Dean praying to God and Cas burning have to be the saddest parts of the episode; not to mention how broke Dean was when he uncovered Cas' body and took that curtain to wrap his body. I knew it was gonna be angst but even, seeing Dean wrapping Cas' body...I wasn't prepared for those emotions. Once again, outstanding job for Jensen. He really seemed utterly helpless and broken. Seeing the look he gave to Cas and wrapping him with those curtains. My heart was breaking for him.
Jaded and Jensen act their heart out. They're absolutely amazing. Their acting is so truthful. And I already love Jack. He's such an interesting character. I hope he stays good, bonds with Cas in a father/son relationship and teams up with the boys to stop Lucifer, who btw is going to be so pissed when he finds out Cas is his daddy.
And MARK PELLEGRINO. He's perfection. I'm glad the writers noticed that we want Mark to play that role. His portrayal is unique, creepy, snarky and sassy. When he said "Dagon" at the very end, he sent chills to my spine. So creepy. I love him! When he was talking to Crowley and suddenly said "Phone" I cracked up. Because Luci is so courteous when it come to answering calls. His Lucifer's just on point: creepy, snarky and sassy as hell. "Oh my Dad. We're both single fathers. I could use a little dad advice right about now. When do you let 'em date?" Lucifer, being the sassy shit he's about his parental lineage. Damn, Mark, you're devilishly perfect. Crowley's explanation to keep Lucifer in Nick's vessel was a bit far-fetched, but I'm cool with it as long as Mark plays that role. I can't even blink every time he's on screen. Mark back as Lucifer is giving me life. He saying "cozy" was amazing and that shoot when he was entering his vessel and then with the red glowing eyes was absolutely creepy.
Fiona's reasoning was a bit stupid: Sailors are ok, but teachers suck. Ghosts are supposed to be irrational vengeful spirits, so it's likely her teacher's final betrayal was in her thoughts. However, teachers are the ones that are supposed to protect you and their betrayal set her grudge against them. That's why most abused children blame their mother for not protecting them.
The BMoL might be bad, but they have very cool toys. That scene were Mr Ketch called Mary out about putting that family "disguise" was just great. Everything he said was on point and I loved it. I don't buy the Tony Bevell was a rogue operative. They have to be up to something. Mary really struggles to be a mother or to act motherly. She's not been a mother for long and motherhood doesn't come naturally but all the boys want is to be a family. Her revelation soften a bit my attitude towards her, but I'll never forget what she did. She claims family comes before but she doesn't truly believe it.
