It's been stated a couple times now, but again for those of you not aware, there is and has always been three types of X-Files episodes
1) Mythology Episodes (e.g. Pilot, Duane Barry, Nisei, Closure)
2) Monster of the Week Episodes (e.g. Squeeze / Tooms, The Host, Detour, Folie a Deux)
3) Comedic [Monster of the Week] Episodes (e.g. Humbug, Jose Chung’s From Outer Space, Bad Blood)
This episode obviously fell into the third category.
That information aside, I feel like this was very close to hitting that nostalgic feeling of the earlier comedic episodes - but didn't quite make it. I definitely enjoyed it, laughed a lot, and watched it a second and third time. But I still feel like the second episode of this season is the strongest so far, then this one following, and the premiere tailing. I certainly can understand how newer fans of the show may be turned off by this one though - they're wanting aliens, conspiracies, flesh eating monsters, etc. But personally, I didn't think it was that bad.
Of course, I had to check out Spielberg's new film to see where his skills have gone. Luckily, I was able to watch a pretty excellent addition to his filmography. Tom Hanks is as great as he always is in here, but the actor I really loved in this was Mark Rylance who plays the USSR spy. He was just so engaging in every scene he's in, even though he's incredibly subtle in what he does. The whole opening sequence with him keeps you locked in despite a lack of dialogue.
Pretty much everything about the movie is done well, but I do have just a bit of an issue with the length being pretty long. It kind of feels like there could have been two separate films from this, or that it would have been perfect for a two parter TV film or something. No biggie though, because everything packed in there is certainly worth your extra time.
The best performance I've ever seen about Jake Gyllenhaal ! I enjoyed all the movie.
The premiere hinted at a return to the best parts of the first season.
Worth your time, comes off with lots of love, a film to watch before death. Powerful. Say's a lot. Makes you think. I didn't expected the ending. Beautiful. Great performance from all. Strong film. A story that I'm sure will make you shed a tear or two. It it felt like a xmas carol with a twist.
Actually it was surprisingly pretty good! Very familiar to the first season, but soundtrack is far better and the plot is more organized.
Wow. The reviews of this are ridiculous. I'm so tired of the armchair "critics" out there today, and the nonsense they whine about. Sure, there's nothing all that noteworthy here, but it's a pretty good weepy with some good performances. If you're in that kind of mood or dig these actors give it a go.
