The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films list serves as a companion to the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? 1,000 Greatest Films of all time list which, - by its nature - tends to have very few films from the 21st century in it. The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films list attempts to highlight and honour this century's most critically revered films and act as a sort of 'resting bay' for many great films that are likely to be included in the 1,000 Greatest Films list sooner or later.

wuxia (ˈwuːˌʃiːˈɑː)
noun. A genre of Chinese fiction and film, concerning the adventures of sword-wielding chivalrous heroes

Before kung fu, there was wuxia. Before cinema, there was wuxia. A widely encompassing term – literally translated as martial (wu) chivalry (xia) – what was made famous in the west as a subgenre of martial arts cinema, finds its roots in seventh-century romantic literature and poetry, evolving through hundreds of years of oral and written tradition. The anti-Confucian value systems of wuxia literature, with their emphasis on the attainment of personal freedom, saw much of it repressed and reconfigured throughout history. The same went for its early cinematic incarnations, the Chinese government banning production in the 1930s as a means of protecting the young against moral corruption. It would re-emerge 20 years later, but with strictly enforced moral codes in place, and it wouldn’t be until the late 60s that the genre would truly come into its own, with the modern wuxia film born under the guidance of the milestone films of Chang Cheh and King Hu.
A genre as synonymous with the supernatural and the philosophical as the codes of honour and justice under which its heroes fight, it’s often characterised as much by its melancholy romanticism as by its fantastical, high-flying clashes of sword and fist.

“Wuxia” is a Mandarin word that literally means “martial heroes”. It has become popular as a term for a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China. Although wuxia is traditionally a form of literature, its popularity has caused it to spread to diverse art forms such as Chinese opera, movies, television series, video games and Manhua (Chinese comic books).

The word “wuxia” is a compound composed of the elements wu, “martial”, “military”, or “armed”, and xia, “honourable”, “chivalrous”, or “hero”. A martial artist who follows the code of xia is often referred to as a xiake (“follower of xia”) or youxia (wandering hero).
The earliest wuxia films date back to the 1920’s. In the 1960’s King Hu and the Shaw Brothers Studio were producing films that featured sophisticated action choreography using wire and trampoline-assisted acrobatics combined with sped-up camera techniques. The storylines in the early films were loosely adapted from existing literature. The first martial arts movie superstars such as Cheng Pei-pei, Jimmy Wang Yu and Connie Chan are among the better known early wuxia movie stars. During the modern era, stars including Jet Li, Brigitte Lin, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi all made a name for themselves in wuxia films. Producer and director Tsui Hark along with legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping owe a large part of their success to their work in the wuxia genre. In 2000, wuxia films found a new and wider audience thanks to the success of Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“. It was a huge box office success and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning four. Its success in the west paved the way for films such as Zhang Yimou’s “Hero“, “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower” to be released in international markets. The genre continues to be popular with both Asian and Western audiences alike. In recent years Daniel Wu’s hit television series has taken the wuxia concept and updated it in his show “Into the Badlands“, which is now into its third season.

This is a comprehensive list of Studio Ghibli related people and their work, with some personal notes
besides the expected movies, it contains some older work by Miyazaki and Takahata from before Studio Ghibli's formation in 1985 (Yes, Nausicaä is actually not a Studio Ghibli Movie). Including Miyazaki's and Takahata's directorial debuts Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro and The Little Norse Prince as well as some well-known World Masterpiece Theater TV Series directed by them.

In its first film season, 1927–28, this award (like others such as the acting awards) was not tied to a specific film; all of the work by the nominated cinematographers during the qualifying period was listed after their names. The problem with this system became obvious the first year, since Karl Struss and Charles Rosher were nominated for their work together on Sunrise but three other films shot individually by either Rosher or Struss were also listed as part of the nomination. The second year, 1929, there were no nominations at all, although the Academy has a list of unofficial titles which were under consideration by the Board of Judges. In the third year, 1930, films, not cinematographers, were nominated, and the final award did not show the cinematographer's name.

Finally, for the 1931 awards, the modern system in which individuals are nominated for a single film each was adopted in all profession-related categories. From 1939 to 1967 with the exception of 1957, there were also separate awards for color and for black-and-white cinematography. Since then, the only black-and-white film to win is Schindler's List (1993).

Floyd Crosby won the award for Tabu in 1931, which was the last silent film to win in this category. Hal Mohr won the only write-in Academy Award ever, in 1935 for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Mohr was also the first person to win for both black-and-white and color cinematography.

No winners are lost, although some of the earliest nominees (and of the unofficial nominees of 1928–29) are lost, including The Devil Dancer (1927), The Magic Flame (1927), and Four Devils (1928). The Right to Love (1930) is incomplete, and Sadie Thompson (1927) is incomplete and partially reconstructed with stills.

The first nominees shot primarily on digital video were The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, with Slumdog Millionaire the first winner.[1] The following year Avatar was the first nominee and winner to be shot entirely on digital video.[2]

In 2018, Rachel Morrison became the first woman to receive a nomination. Prior to that it had been the last Academy Award category to never nominate a woman.[3][4]
