After enjoying James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie I was interested in checking out the series after multiple people recommended it to me. I was extremely hesitant because live action TV shows especially newer ones are some of the most laughable excuse of garbage you could ever waste 30 minutes watching and after getting only halfway through the first episode I realized that hesitancy was warranted. Pretty sure the f bomb is said over 15 times in the first half of the episode and comes off like the show was written by a pre teen who had just learned the f word and is trying to impress his friends. The Suicide Squad was a decent mix of campy black comedy and gratuitous violence, something that James Gunn has done well before with Super but this is more like the result of giving a 12 year old a bag of meth, telling him to write something like Deadpool and afterwards you have the producers insert the obligatory PC wokeness that has to go into every new TV show made or some executive who's last name ends in berg will have a heart attack and immediately die. James Gunn's Suicide Squad certainly wasn't an amazing film or anything but it wasn't whatever abomination this is, I have no idea what Gunn was thinking directing this, maybe the producers had his nuts in a vice or something. I don't hold Gunn or his movies to that high of a standard, his movies are entertaining, decently made and miles better than whatever Marvel defecates on anticipating fans these days, he certainly isn't the best director in the black comedy sphere and he is no Coen Brothers but this is just so unbelievably terrible it floored my already modest expectations.
I don't know what this show even is anymore because it sure isn't the same South Park I know. Not a single crude, dirty or offensive joke was made throughout the entire runtime of this episode. Mr. Garrison acts like a completely different character now because I guess it's 2021 and we can no longer make fun of gay people? For whatever reason Mr. Mackey's voice actor was changed to someone that attempts a poor impression of him. The song and dance number in the middle of the episode is just completely uncanny, out of nowhere and sounds like something that would play on children's program not a South Park episode. This episode was so terrible that I would honestly rather watch any of the new Family Guy episodes than watch this. Squidbillies, Always Sunny in Philadelphia, these were the few shows up until 2021 that PC culture hadn't completely ruined but all of that changed going into the new year, I guess with South Park at least it was a gradual decline but this episode finally sticks a fork in it and buries the series six feet under. The studio who works on South Park have finally beaten every last inch of identity out of the show.
This movie is shot extremely well and has some amazing grotesque, gut wrenching scenes but unfortunately some of the characters actions really pulled me out of the experience. The movie seems like it's trying really hard to justify the fate of the boyfriend brought onto by the main character and set up how awful the boyfriend is but the whole time I just felt terrible for his situation. Imagine staying with someone you don't want to because she has mental health issues and is going through an incredibly traumatic phase of her life then you get raped, your girlfriend blames you for it assuming your cheating on her and then she decides to burn you alive in spite choosing you over others who actively volunteered to be sacrificed. If the movie would of focused equally on what the boyfriend is going through I felt the ending would of actually been tragic but as it is now it just reads as incredibly sadistic while attempting to come off as empowering. The rest of the cast don't fair too well either as most of them come off as one dimensional while all the characterization is focused on our main character.
Ari Aster definitely has established what type of movies he likes to make and he's incredibly good at doing so but Hereditary is the better choice for a watch because it decides to sympathize with most of its main cast instead of demonizing them for a twisted sadistic self fulfilling payoff.
I was initially very confused when first viewing this episode, hearing Tracy Morgan's voice come out of a character like Early was extremely off putting so much that I thought to myself "this has to be just a one time thing for a joke or something" another thought jokingly crossed my mind that Early's voice actor must of said something on social media that ticked the typical sensitive types off...... I didn't expect for it to be true. Setting this stupid trend of firing people because of a single tweet/post aside Tracy Morgan is not whatsoever a good choice for the replacement voice of Early. Even if his voice fit the character Tracy is not a good voice actor whatsoever, he cannot emote his voice at all and just sounds monotone throughout his entire performance. This choice by Adult Swim to cast Tracy is so baffling that I cannot imagine their choice was based off of anything past "we need to hire a black man to make up for what the previous voice actor said." It's pathetic thinking a network like Adult Swim has gotten this limp wristed to pre-emptively fire someone because of mob rule on an issue that literally no one knew about because the previous voice actor immediately deleted the post himself after posting it but it honestly doesn't surprise me after the cancellation of World Peace. I was initially excited with the announcement of the revival of Metalocalypse, Aqua Teen and Squidbillies but after seeing what is happening with the final season of Squibillies I am dreading it. Stuart Baker (the previous voice actor for Early) was apart of a country band for YEARS which had produced many songs that would not be considered politically correct in the slightest by todays standard, the people at Adult Swim type casted the dude because he was just like Early there is no mistaking that, so suddenly firing the guy for expressing opinions that you knew VERY WELL he had has really shown how much Adult Swim as a TV network has changed since the premiere of Squidbillies.
