I went for the laughs and left the movie theater with an existential crisis. I loved it <3
As a film intended to introduce the Star Wars world, the design and special effects that went into this are beautiful and add scope and detail to the original trilogy. The score is also a wonderful addition to the already iconic music. As an introduction to a new set of characters, the story of the discovery of Anakin Skywalker is poorly paced and lacks urgency, despite characters consistently reminding the audience that time is short. Too many cameos and bit parts for extraneous characters and dialogue telling us what is already being shown slow the film down considerably. Better editing would have resulted in a better film. Liam Neeson however carries the film with a great performance as Qui Gon Jinn and the villains are equally compelling, culminating in a stunning duel between the Jedi and Sith which is still one of the high points of the whole series.

Ahhh I had heard so much about this, and I finally saw it. I can see how many people loved this movie. It was AWESOME, thrilling, emotional. Not to mention, badass. Though not very realistic haha, how he didn't get one bullet untill the end, and how he was so good at everything even though he probably hadn't slept.. Nevertheless LOVED IT.
There is no longer any reason to continue making art. Perfection has been achieved. Best thing since Paddington 2.
In all seriousness, this reminded me a bit of Pig in that Cage isn't remotely as over the top as you'd expect. He has a couple scenes where he leans full into the exaggerated performance we are there to see, but the movie caries itself on a clever, self-aware script that is genuinely fun and with good character arcs. It's not incredibly deep, but I do suspect a lot of this fictional Cage mirrors the experience that the real Cage has lived. That shows, and it was a thrill to watch.
I'm rewatching this. I think I probably first saw it when it was released in 2007, and it was, I think, my introduction to Amy Adams, who was perfect for this role. Then, as her resume grew rapidly (she is a self-confessed workaholic) I came to see her for the chameleon that she is, pretty much perfect in most of her roles, accumulating many awards including 5 Oscar nominations, the latest for her role in my favourite movie last year, "Arrival". Such diversity!
This movie is a fun romp, taking a shot at both Disney fairy book endings and stereotypical New York cynicism, and finding the happily ever after happiness of a great (8 out of 10) romantic comedy. Next Disney Movie day selection - "Mulan"
Excellent Show wish episodes where longer
The romance part is so bad. The female character's job was to be pretty and love Maverick like crazy after a couple of eye contacts. I don't even remember her name. I haven't seen top gun: maverick yet, but I believe this problem won't exist in it otherwise it won't be such highly recommended.
