The Godzilla film series is broken into several (different) eras reflecting a characteristic style and corresponding to the same eras used to classify all kaiju eiga (monster movies) in Japan. The first, second, and fourth eras refer to the Japanese emperor during production: the Shōwa era, the Heisei era, and the Reiwa era. The third is called the Millennium era, as the emperor (Heisei) is the same, but these films are considered to have a different style and storyline than the Heisei era.

Nippon Connection Film Festival Goes Online! Virtual Edition of the 20th Japanese Film Festival from June 9 to 14, 2020.
Fine entertainment, food for thought, five world premieres and at least a touch of Japanese wackiness and warmth – this is what awaits the audience with around 80 current Japanese short and feature-length films of the 21st Nippon Connection Film Festival. After weeks of hoping and worrying, it is now certain that unfortunately the pandemic will not allow in-theater screenings in 2021 either. The largest festival for Japanese cinema worldwide will once again be held exclusively online from June 1 to 6, 2021.

Love them or hate them, remakes are a part of every Horror Fan's life. So many remakes end up being so bad, that the word itself has become a sort of cinematic vulgarity that makes most of us cringe; honestly, we had to stop ourselves from slapping our computer screen when we read about the upcoming C.U.J.O. remake.
Aside from the worst of them, most Horror Remakes tend to be little more than unnecessary money-grabs that bring nothing new to the table, which leaves them middle of the road efforts at best. Every now and then though, a remake comes along that surprises us by being good, or dare we even say every bit as, or even better than, the original.

Most Home Invasion flicks tend to involve some malevolent bastards forcing their way into a home, with the goal of terrorizing its occupants in mind. Sometimes they involve someone hiding in an attic or an upstairs room. Sometimes, it's a tiger that does the invading.
No matter what the scenario though, the average Home Invasion movie makes for an intense and terrifying ride. The above average ones make that ride even better.

Anthology Films, especially in the Horror Genre, can be a mixed bag at best. When done right, they give you an assortment of terrifying tales that mess with your mind in different ways, that usually come in short, concentrated bursts. When done wrong however, they can feel like they're nothing more than a bunch of half-assed stories that have been randomly thrown together, just for the sake of it.
Some Horror Anthologies are great from start to finish (like Trick 'r Treat), while others are great because they boast one or two truly fantastic segments (like the clown story in Amusement.) Either way though, they all offer something for those of us who crave compelling short stories, and all are worthy of our attention.

There are plenty of Killer Animal movies out there that play on our fear of dogs, bears, spiders, sharks, etc.. and most of them tend to be B-movie cheese-fests. Even some of the "Good" ones aren't necessarily great movies, but they still manage to be effective somehow. Probably because animals, big or small, can be terrifying.

Post Apocalyptic movies are some of our favorite kinds of movies to watch. Any work of fiction that involves people trying to survive in a destroyed world, just taps into our fear centers like few others. There are a few different ways that the world can end in these movies: nuclear holocaust, viral outbreak, alien invasion, nature revolting against us, or sometimes, the world even ends by supernatural means.
Many PA flicks are probably more based in the realm of Sci-Fi than they are pure Horror, but even the ones that stray too far from our Horror purview tend to be terrifying in their own right. Putting this list together meant including some of those types of movies, but in the end, they all fit quite neatly under the Post-Apocalyptic banner; even if a few of them are more accurately "End of the World" movies than they are Post-Apocalyptic.

For us, The Road Warrior is probably our all-time fave, although this year's Mad Max: Fury Road comes close. The Werewolf Sub-Genre has always been a rather bland one for us. Aside from a few standout titles being stellar, we've found that most Werewolf flicks tend to underwhelm us. A lot of them just aren't that good. Growing up in a time when An American Werewolf in London and The Howling set the bar on Werewolf movies at a crazy high level probably has a lot to do with it though. They spoiled us.
When done right though, Werewolf movies have an unbridled ferocity about them, and they make us identify with the plight of those doomed to change into bloodthirsty monsters by the light of the moon... or fear the ones who do so simply because they can.

As Halloween draws ever closer, the next stop on our Best of... journey leads us to the most fearsome and revered movie monster of them all: The Vampire. They're evil, they need to feed, and they want our blood. That's about as terrifying as it gets.
Ever since Dracula and Nosferatu first terrified audiences nearly a century ago, the vampire has arguably been the most prominent of all movie monsters. There have been too many incarnations of the bloodsucking menaces to count (Dracula himself has been brought to cinematic life at least 170 times himself, with more surely to come), and so picking only 30 of them to represent the sub-genre as a whole was no easy task.
The vampire movies that we tend to love the most are the exciting ones, the darker ones. The ones that put a welcomed twist on an overly-familiar story, or the ones that just play it straight and give us exactly what we expect from a vampire story. Depends on our mood. Luckily for us, there are more than enough vampire movies to fit any mood, at any given time.
We love vampire flicks. I mean, one of the coolest vampires of all-time is our mascot, so that pretty much goes without saying, but we really do love them. What other movie monster can be so suave and yet so terrifyingly deadly at the same time? *Hannibal Lecter doesn't count.

Someone recently asked us if we could recommend any Haunted House or Supernatural movies along the lines of 1408, The Shining, or Rose Red for them to watch, which got us to thinking that we should just make a list of the 30 or so of the best Haunted House flicks that we've seen.
Then we got to thinking about what qualifies a movie as a "Haunted House" movie? Well, a house that is haunted by a spirit of entity is the main thing, but you could stretch the definition to include plenty of other settings & plots as well; technically, Alien (1979) could be considered a Haunted House movie, at least insofar as its mechanics are concerned. The Evil Dead is technically a Haunted House movie too... but then again, it's really more of a possession flick, right?
We will try to keep this list as “Pure” as possible, but keep in mind that some movies can easily fit into two or more sub-genres, so there will be a certain amount of flexibility about it.

There's something terrifying as hell about a viral outbreak which turns everyone around you into monsters that want to kill you, eat you, or assimilate you. The Walking Dead (which is not on this list, but is relative to our point) is the most popular show on TV for a reason, folks, and that reason is that pandemics, whether large or small, prey on our most primal of fears: that the world around us can go to hell at any minute.
Walking STDs; hordes of infected humans; killer mutant sheep; viral demons; flesh-eating bacteria; or even alien slugs that are determined to take over the world; the movies on this Best of Viral/Infected Horror list are sure to give you nightmares. As nasty and terrifying as Horror movies are in general, they can also be a bit absurd to a point. When a movie comes along and decides to play on that absurdity for laughs, the results are often a thing of beauty... when done right, of course.
In their own way, Horror Comedies can be every bit as satisfying of a watch as standard Horror flicks are, and sometimes, even more so.

Witches are as synonymous with Halloween as are pumpkins and black cats, and so with October rapidly approaching, we got to thinking about Witch movies, and how great they can be when done right.
Some movie Witches are benevolent and use their powers for good, but in the Horror Genre, most tend to be wizened old crones who are out to kill or eat people, or even worse, take their souls. Most Witches serve Satan you see, so sacrifice is a big part of their daily lives.

There's something about a ship full of people in deep space who find themselves set upon by some malevolent force, that makes us smile like fools. Alien started it all for us, and years later it was Event Horizon that re-invigorated our love for Horror flicks set it space, but there are others out there that are just about as good, even if a lot of them are not purely Horror.
There just aren't a lot of Horror movies set in space, and so we had to be a bit liberal with the titles that we included on this list. Below, you'll find a few movies that lean more towards the Sci-Fi side of things, as well as a few that are straight-up B-movies. We even included Hellraiser: Bloodlines here, because it featured Cenobites in Space.
It's a small list that takes some liberty with boundaries, but Space Horror is a tiny sub-genre that we love, and so we felt that it deserved a bit of recognition.

When we think of Slasher Flicks, we mainly think of masked killers, blood, clever kills, and promiscuous teens in various stages of undress; because that's what they are, for the most part. There are plenty of Slashers that offer more than just visceral thrills though, giving us things like atmosphere, tension, genuine terror, levity, and even solid stories that help fray our nerves in different and clever ways.
No matter what variety they come in though, the Slasher Flick is an important staple in the Horror Genre, and one that most Horror Fanatics tend to embrace with open arms.

The Found Footage/POV/Hand-Held/First Person sub-genre is a derisive one at best. FF flicks can be intense and terrifying, making you feel like you;'re actually watching real footage of real people being stalked, haunted, etc... and those are the good ones. Found Footage flicks can also be cheap, shoddy, predictable, and overly-familiar, which basically renders them useless as far as scares go. Those are the bad ones.
Below, we've tried to cull the absolute best "Footage" movies from the hundreds and hundreds that are out there, which was no easy feat. We tried our best to be objective about which movies made the list, and which ones didn't, but in the end, our personal tastes played more of a role here than they usually do when we make a Best of list.
There will no doubt be a few movies missing from this list that will make people cry foul; Grave Encounters and The Den are two good examples of popular FF flicks that many Horror fans loved, but did nothing for us. Sorry.
We've also included a few movies in our Honorable Mention section that might raise some eyebrows: End of Watch isn't Horror at all, and Sinister may have some great Found Footage in it, but is by no means a FF flick. They both do the FF thing extremely well however, and so here they are.
The Top Six for this list was a tough one to put together, mainly because a lot of the movies below could easily be at the top of the list. Each of the movies in The Top Six were included for specific reasons, but that doesn't mean that Home Movie or The Tunnel weren't as good. Rankings are a flexible thing, so take them as you will.

We are absolute suckers for a good Horror Documentary. We love knowing what went into making them, what the actors thought about starring in them, and discovering all of the little (and sometimes big) things that went on behind the scenes. Even if we're not big fans of a movie or its series, we always seem to love watching Docs about them.
There are a ton of Horror Docs out there; many of them come in the form of shorter "Making of" and "Behind the Scenes" featurettes on Blu-ray & DVD releases, but the ones that we love the most usually tend to be full-length efforts that delve as deep as they can into their subject matter. Of course, some of them are no more than countdowns or celebrations of the years of Horror past. Some of them are even about real-life Horrors.
No matter their topic, most Horror Documentaries are enjoyable to watch, and they usually teach us something new.

Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments isn’t currently available to buy, but it usually pops up on TV in October, so keep your eyes out, and your DVR’s ready.

We love Bad Movies nearly as much as we love Horror. Sometimes, when we're in the mood, we may even love them more.
There's just something deeply satisfying about watching a movie that tries so hard to get everything right, fail miserably in every single aspect, to the point of pain. There's no way that you can watch Vanilla Ice try to act in Cool as Ice and not be in tears; or watch Lou Ferrigno tying rubber cobras together while telling them "Hey, be nice!" in Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and not die laughing; and there's no way in hell that you can watch The Room and not wonder "Does it get any worse than this?"
Most of the movies below are so horrible and inept, that they defy all logical explanation, and they're all crazy enjoyable on a level that we can't even begin to explain.
Not all of these movies are going to be easy find. We've had to watch many of them ourselves on used VHS tapes.
Amazon is a great place to buy a copy of many of these movies, but as most of them are sold through 3rd party sellers, be sure to read their user reviews to make sure they deliver what they promise, and for a reasonable price.
You can also watch a lot of these movies on YouTube, even if the quality isn't that great.
We include the MST3K version of Pod People here, because we can’t find the normal version of the movie to watch, and it’s an A+ episode.

For the record, many of the movies beyond the Top Six are absolutey classic too. The Apple, Cage, Hard Rock Zombies, Ninja of the Magnificence, Pod People, Rock n' Roll Nightmare, The Room, Sinbad of the Seven Seas, and Space Mutiny are all brilliant in their atrociousness.
Keep in mind that no "Best of" list is ever perfect, but merely a solid starting point for anyone looking to watch some great flicks, and in this case, great flicks of a particular type.

Backwoods Horror movies come in many different varieties, but being chased through the woods by inbred, homicidal maniacs is definitely at the core of this tried and true sub-genre. Of course sometimes it can be Neo-Nazis doing the chasing, or maybe even a monster; and sometimes the action takes place on a mountain or even in a single cabin; but there are always somehow woods involved. They kinda have to be.
No matter the setting or menace though, Backwoods Horror is wildly compelling, because who doesn't fear being lost in the boonies while death is breathing down your neck?
There are plenty of Slasher flicks that are technically Backwoods Horror, but we didn't include them here because they got their own list, and there are plenty true Backwoods Horror movies out there that deserve the attention.
When it comes to Backwoods Horror flicks, we implore you to check out some of the lesser known titles like Frontiere(s), Rabies, or Rovdyr, if you're looking for something "new" and a bit different.
Also, don't sleep on The Tourist Trap. Truly creepy stuff.

This idea began, as all great ideas do these days, as a discussion over the Twitter wires. At first the question was this: "What is the best horror film of the last ten years?"
I received dozens of great responses, but was distracted by an entertainingly civil argument with several people over whether or not Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth qualifies as a horror film. (I say it does, which is kind of a spoiler. Let's just say Pan's Labyrinth made my Top 10.) So with the assistance of the Twitter gallery (and the inestimable help of my pal @williambgoss), I offer a completely subjective (yet hopefully intelligent) list.

Before kung fu, there was wuxia. Before cinema, there was wuxia. A widely encompassing term – literally translated as martial (wu) chivalry (xia) – what was made famous in the west as a subgenre of martial arts cinema, finds its roots in seventh-century romantic literature and poetry, evolving through hundreds of years of oral and written tradition. The anti-Confucian value systems of wuxia literature, with their emphasis on the attainment of personal freedom, saw much of it repressed and reconfigured throughout history. The same went for its early cinematic incarnations, the Chinese government banning production in the 1930s as a means of protecting the young against moral corruption. It would re-emerge 20 years later, but with strictly enforced moral codes in place, and it wouldn’t be until the late 60s that the genre would truly come into its own, with the modern wuxia film born under the guidance of the milestone films of Chang Cheh and King Hu.
A genre as synonymous with the supernatural and the philosophical as the codes of honour and justice under which its heroes fight, it’s often characterised as much by its melancholy romanticism as by its fantastical, high-flying clashes of sword and fist.

“Wuxia” is a Mandarin word that literally means “martial heroes”. It has become popular as a term for a genre of Chinese fiction concerning the adventures of martial artists in ancient China. Although wuxia is traditionally a form of literature, its popularity has caused it to spread to diverse art forms such as Chinese opera, movies, television series, video games and Manhua (Chinese comic books).
The word “wuxia” is a compound composed of the elements wu, “martial”, “military”, or “armed”, and xia, “honourable”, “chivalrous”, or “hero”. A martial artist who follows the code of xia is often referred to as a xiake (“follower of xia”) or youxia (wandering hero).
The earliest wuxia films date back to the 1920’s. In the 1960’s King Hu and the Shaw Brothers Studio were producing films that featured sophisticated action choreography using wire and trampoline-assisted acrobatics combined with sped-up camera techniques. The storylines in the early films were loosely adapted from existing literature. The first martial arts movie superstars such as Cheng Pei-pei, Jimmy Wang Yu and Connie Chan are among the better known early wuxia movie stars. During the modern era, stars including Jet Li, Brigitte Lin, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi all made a name for themselves in wuxia films. Producer and director Tsui Hark along with legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping owe a large part of their success to their work in the wuxia genre. In 2000, wuxia films found a new and wider audience thanks to the success of Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“. It was a huge box office success and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning four. Its success in the west paved the way for films such as Zhang Yimou’s “Hero“, “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower” to be released in international markets. The genre continues to be popular with both Asian and Western audiences alike. In recent years Daniel Wu’s hit television series has taken the wuxia concept and updated it in his show “Into the Badlands“, which is now into its third season.

For so many people around the globe their vision of Japan has been coloured by geisha, ikebana, cherry blossoms, and tea ceremonies. For fans of Japanese films, though, that genteel tourist exterior gives way to towering monsters from kaiju films, lethal and highly-skilled samurai, and even the complex and colourful world of anime. Of all the cultural icons exported overseas by Japanese movies one may have has captured the imaginations of audiences more than all of those combined, that of the Japanese mob, the yakuza. Unlike Hollywood gangsters all the way from the roles of Edward G. Robinson up to HBO's "The Sopranos" the yakuza were (and still are) a criminal organization steeped in ritual and mystery. While in reality the yakuza grew from violent street gangs who ruled Japan's black market on movie screens they replaced samurai as a way to explore traditional values of loyalty, feudalism, and the warrior spirit during a time when these very values were being discouraged or just plain banned by the Post-War occupying U.S. forces. Of course these snarling, swaggering, tattooed gangsters have had their screen personas revamped any number of times through the decades and have ultimately fallen out of favor with Japanese movie audiences yakuza eiga have remained one of the most popular genres of Japanese film overseas. The J-Film Pow-Wow has been going for nearly four years now and during that time we've reported on the annual Top Ten lists put out by various online and print sources and Chris, Bob, Marc, Matt and Eric have spent our fair share of time scouring and critiquing other people's Top 100 lists of Japanese films. It got to the point where we thought we'd put ourselves out there with our own list, something beyond our monthly Top Ten lists. With that in mind we pooled our collective movie-going experiences and have come up with the J-Film Pow-Wow's own Top 100 Japanese Films list.
Now, before you read on you should keep something in mind. This list was tabulated by all five of the Pow-Wow crew making lists of their own favorite Japanese films - not films we felt were historically important and not films that parroted other lists that have created the present canon of Japanese cinema. Our main concern was to come up with films that we held a real heartfelt love for. Once we drew up our lists we ranked them, assigned a points system and cross referenced all five to come up with this Top 100 list. There are some obvious picks ranking in obvious positions, there are some critically-favoured films in the Japanese film canon that didn't fare as well, and there are a lot of surprises. Those are the films on the list we're all most excited about.
