The Last of Us: 1x08 When We Are in Need

That was boring again, well, until the last 5 minutes or so but Ellie sure did fuck them up.

Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Evan Peters plays a crazy, psychotic serial killer a little too well.

@zxmbieunicxrn Lol, Evan Peters is a real good actor, that's for sure.

This is the kind of movie that makes you wish TRAKT had a rating for Good But Had the Potential to Be a LOT Better. In my opinion, this could have - should have - been an awesome movie but as it was, it has to settle for "not bad". The story was great, and IMO, Nick Nolte played perhaps one of his best roles in years... Too bad it petered out like they forgot what to do with him. Seriously, his scenes were incredible and (in some places) genuinely heart-rending. The fight scenes were decent, but - again - this movie had the potential to be so much better. I would love to have seen them give Kurt Angle a much stronger role in the movie, and the back story was pretty thin all around. This was a very good movie, a good story...and please note, it is NOT "Rocky" made over...with a superb twist, but generally, the whole was far less than the sum of its parts. This could have been close to one of my favorite movies of all times, but there were just too many places that it either fell apart or just fell flat. I love sports movies to the point of watching them over and over, but I doubt I'll ever watch this one again. Not because I already know how it ends, but mainly because of how lacking it was overall. Crying shame.

The only thing its lacking is a true MMA movie competitor.

Team Foxcatcher

The reason I don't like documentaries is that they aren't enough like this one. No narrator, no melodrama, just authentic home videos and interviews with the people involved. A must-watch if you saw the film Foxcatcher.

loading replies

@saint-pauly Couldn't agree more. I actually saw the film first and knew it was based on a true story so immediately looked for a Docu on it... and boy did we find it!

Midnight Mass

Very slow moving, and WAY too much religion - I had to fast-forward through a lot of tedious monologue. Couldn't finish the 3rd episode - don't care what it was all about.

loading replies

@emm12321 To be fair the the poster/name and even episode names were screaming religion at us. That being said im inclined to agree with you. Im a fan of that Zack Gilford though :D

Hillbilly Elegy

[Netflix] Without knowing the book on which it's based, this doesn't seem the most successful portrait of white America that, like Amy Adams' character, falls over and over again in the same mistakes. Ron Howard builds a loud, histrionic movie based on a flimsy script, banal dialogue and messy construction. While Amy Adams is contagious of the histrionics of the film, Glenn Close manages to walk in the limit.

@miguelreina <3 thanks for the clarification! I totally understand now!

Hillbilly Elegy

A really good story of the complexities of family and coming to terms with your past and reconciling that with your present and future. The struggle of loving what you are and who your people are while realizing the deep flaws of humanity.

A really, really good movie.

@maphiagurl Couldn't have said it better myself -- I wont even try. Beautiful movie, beautiful story. Learning it was based on a true story and seeing pictures of the real life people really hit it home for me :)

Ever since the mid 90s, Roland Emmerich has attempted time and time again to repackage and recapture the ideas from Independence Day. After many failed attempts, I wonder why there’s still a theatrical market for films like this. Or rather, it’s odd that Hollywood thinks there’s still a market for it, given that all of Emmerich’s films since 2012 have flopped at the box office. And, he’s about to add another one to his resume. This should’ve gotten a streaming release at best, as it belongs in the same category as a film like The Tomorrow War. It’s background noise you throw on while you’re doing the dishes or folding the laundry. It's too disposable, phony, poorly acted and boring to pay any serious attention to, let alone pay money for. There's a sense of authenticity and fun to dumb action movies like Independence Day that you're never going to capture with the way these kind of films are made now. You have to applaud Emmerich for making a big, original studio film, but it’s still generic schlock that doesn’t have a single ounce of personality. Fuck whoever financed this.

Edit: after a little bit of digging I found out that the primary investor of this thing is a Chinese company called Tencent Pictures. They’re also responsible for financing other great films such as Terminator: Dark Fate, Warcraft, Kong: Skull Island, Men in Black: International, Monster Hunter and the 2 Venom movies. To put it mildly, it appears that it’s this company’s sole purpose to flood the market with trash, and not exactly the fun kind. Now I know what you’re thinking: maybe their involvement helps with receiving a Chinese release from the CCP? But here’s the problem: Venom 2 was banned in China. So, they’re clearly just a bunch of incompetent investors, given that all of their films (the Venom films excluded) have been massive financial and critical flops. The takeaway for Hollywood should be pretty simple: if Tencent wants to invest in your production, cancel all plans before you have another Moonfall on your hands.

2.5/10

Watch it if you’re a fan of Toto, or genuinly laugh at any point during the first scene.

I'm a huge fan of the sport and Halle Barry so I was really looking forward to this one. MMA movies don't really have a good track record apart from Warrior. This movie is not the exception either, unfortunately.

Halle is good, but that's like calling water wet. A satisfactory performance is not enough to save this very below-average drama. It's a tired plot we've seen a million times before with a predictable ending.

I liked seeing Valentina Shevchenko in it and she should get more roles.

loading replies

@yomie Im totally in agreement with you.

And I demand Shevchenko as 007 :P I know that's not gonna happen, but one can dream :D

Stop making documentaries about these new mediocre artists! I actually like some of her music but why make a documentary about her? She's only been around for a year and that was a boring and uninspiring documentary I've ever watched.

@csrz Because people idolize her and want to know more. Its really that simple sir.
