Sadly this is another show that will be pirated due to stupid marketing decisions making it US only through HBO Max. As with other shows that are exclusive to one market it need serious funding (like the Mandalorian) or it will simply just fade away due to lack on viewers.
I will sadly not see this one until it becomes available on Netflix or regular HBO, and then it will probably not even show up on my radar anymore as the marketing buzz will have faded long before that. To bad, it seemed to be a decent series.

@jimi-wikman So.. you're not watching the show, but you do rate it (an one at that)?
Considering the high ratings of some reviewers - I persisted.
But a messy plot (albeit with strong sub-stories) combined with the trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions means I won't be investing more time in this series. Disappointing.

@peteo definitely what I thought. I persisted for five episodes which led to nowhere!! I don't understand why this show get such high ratings...
Nothings changed in the future…white man still rules the universe while enslaving all the other colored people.

@whos_ur_buddha hahaha dude, your lifestyle must be pretty exhausting, evil everywhere, don't forget climate and covid and anxiety and whatnot. WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE, TOMORROW. Because of the white men of course. You've forgotten straight and old...
I absolutely loved "The Witch" and was excited to see what director Eggers could do with two great actors and his great attention to detail and obvious talent.
Well, turns out - not much.
"The lighthouse" has fantastic cinematography, set decorations, costumes, and Dafoe and Pattinson are really digging into the material with gusto. The problem is that there's no discernible plot, nothing that happens on screen is particularly interesting, and it builds up to nothing.
Probably the most disappointing movie of the year for me. I hope for his next movie, Eggers pays as much attention to the plot and story as he does to veracity of the setting and the characters.loading replies
@fawlty70 first third: oooh wow, black & white movie, but what is going on. Second third: now what is really going on? Third third: Uhm this doesn’t make any sense and is rather pointless.
It starts off well, natural disasters, animals behaving aggressively, a new disease spreading... but it quickly dives into the horror/science-fiction/mystery scenario... and of course, that unknown intelligence hiding in the sea... sorry, but that's so done ad nauseam already. I don't know the book this is based on, mind you, but I'd have hoped for a more scientific explanation, I don't know some kind of climate change changed the physiology of existing species etc. Not this nonsense. And the ending was so predictable... sorry, but how often did I already see someone swept up on the shore, moving, opening their eyes and they're glittering now? That's so cliché... and it's also an open end. Why can't series be led to a proper ending any more?
And the characters... they're all so good, so committed, so utterly bland that I can't find any reason to really care.
I also realize that Europe's a small continent... but small universe syndrome where f.e. Sigur is in Geneva at one scene, and in the next he's at his house in Trondheim (a house which isn't really centrally located), then he's in Kiel, and then he takes a helicopter to the Shetland Islands... give me a timeframe of a couple of days for that, but the way it's shown it practically all takes place simultaneously.

@nicky2910 The book it is based on is clearly better. Especially the ending seemed very much shortened and changed from the original in the TV show. Of course, the story doesn't do anything earth-shatteringly new, but this pseudo-scientific thing, similar to Dan Brown and his novels, fascinates me a lot. The book also has much more action and antagonists. I would like to see a movie adaptation with high production value.
Really poor casting. They couldn’t spend little bit more to get better actors?

@whos_ur_buddha They spent everything on the crappy CGIs...
