Deserved Oscar Winner. Definitely not the best movie of all time, not even the best korean movie, but it has a powerful story with a nice ending. Just one thing that is not logical: how in the hell nobody knows about the room under the house, I mean the rich daughter was there at the end with Kevin laying in front of it, now way she didn't see this
great film showing how it's like to step into the "real world" from, well, basically, the forest

This is why I watch movies! I hope to find a film that just consumes you for a couple of hours and then stays with you for days afterwards. Easily one of the best films I've seen in the last few years - I don't know why it did not get a sniff for move of the year.

"We dance alone. That's why we only play electronic music."
The Lobster takes place in a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.
The Lobster is a film that's both strange and completely bizarre, but rather brilliant as well. It's one of those movies that's so different with it's story and visuals that it's quite intriguing to watch. The cinematography was tremendous and the movie isn't predicable, as many times it takes a different turn for the best. Yorgos Lanthimos knows what he's doing and I can tell what he was going for when it came to the self aware moments. Every choice Lanthimos made in this movie when it came to the acting was done on purpose, as it fitted well in this unusual world that these people lived in. The movie isn't not for everyone (or just like every movie I like), but hey, everyone is different.
This sure is a weird movie, but in a good way. Yorgos Lanthimos has a very unique style. Colin Farrell really is one of the best actors working today and we need more John C. Reilly in everything. Also the score is very eerie and makes you feel uncomfortable, like you should be.
blood and biscuits everywhere :3
So the main character checks himself into an institution that forces .... um, spoiler. Yeah, it's a very dark and unique comedy. The social commentary is really striking - at our core humans can be awful people and as part of the awfulness we will often try to control others when the opportunity allows it. There is a fantastic scene near the end of the film where a husband has to make a really awful decision. He does and appears happy to do so until it blows up in his face. Hilarious scene.
That said.... it's not a great movie to watch. I actually had to watch it over two different sittings because I fell asleep the first time. I'd give the uniqueness of the film a 9 and the watchability a 7.

A must see for all surrealists out there. It delivers a razor-sharp satire of our society. I just love such weird humour. Unique experience for sure.
Everybody, try laughing. Then whatever scares you will go away!
I introduced my AAR* to the creative genius of Hayao Miyazaki's Ghibli Studio, today, by taking her to see MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, which was her first Japanese Anime movie. Here is her review (warning, it has some mild spoilers, which I shall note):
I think this movie is a 10 because it is a great movie! I liked all the parts but my favourite part was when the older sister found her younger sister . That was very happy. It had some scary and sad parts but it was all happy at the end . I really liked the two girls, the main characters. I would recommend this movie because it is a very good movie and you would enjoy it very much.
She gives this film a 10 (very great) out of 10 and a thumbs up!

Great movie!
Very funny.
I almost peed myself.
You gotta see it.
Swallow is like wearing second hand underwear that's far too tight yet looks incredible on you. It's full of cringe and will never stop making you uncomfortable yet works in every way possible.
This neo-pre-feminist (yes, I just made that up) psychological thriller is constantly evolving as it explores the psyche of a trophy wife whose at risk of being tarnished. Director Carlo Mirabella-Davis leaves a lasting imprint of his style on this film that Haley Bennet owns like a dress tailor made for her talent.
Really good movie. Paul Thomas Anderson's first film and he has a good one. Phillip Baker Hall is great and another good performance from John C. Reilly, who is a very underrated actor.
Stellar cast with some great acting, but the plot was weak
There is a film written by Paul Thomas Anderson that stars Sam Jackson, John C. Reilly and Philip Seymoure Hoffman that you haven't heard of. This was really a nice little Indie film. The lead was discovered much too late in life.
A truely unique documentary. Not only does the director talk to some of the people responsible for mass murders of commies in Indonesia but he also enlists them in a project to make a movie about their experiences. They then go on and even mix together diffrent genres (musicals, ganster film, etc.) for their story. This gives it a rather surreal vibe but it underlines the thinking of the perpetrators. The way they openly - without regret - talk about their past actions is disturbing. Needless to say there is a climax to the movie and it's all captured with just the camera rolling. I now might also know how "sick to the stomach" sounds like. Well worth for some astonishing scenes and it only occasionally drags on.
As of now, there seem to be three different versions: a 115 minute cut for the festival release, a directors cut of 159 minutes (the one I watched and belive is really the real one (matches RT)) and another one that is unfinished and apperantly is shared in Indonesia (official screenings are not permitted there). The last one has some credits/scenes in it which were removed for the "proper" release for security reasons (many credits have been listed as anon).
This is the only movie I have every watched that I have ever wanted to scream at. The (actors? murderers?) enjoy reenacting and reminiscing so much it's sickening. One of the most powerful moments was when the man responsible for leading the paramilitary organization responsible said that killing people with piano wire was the most "humane" way to exterminate the communists and that they didn't want to look like bloodthirsty animals on the film (or something to this extent). I love absurd movies, especially violent or shocking ones. But when you know it's all real - the murders, the torture, the smiles as they reenact it all - it's completely different.
[spolier]Anwar looks like he finally starts to realize at the end what he did was wrong, but he won't even say for sure. He seems so conflicted.[/spolier]
At any rate, it's a slow burn but very much worth a watch. If you ever need a movie that's the perfect definition for the "banality of evil" this is it. Hang around, make a movie, smoke a cigar, casually talk about how much you enjoy raping 14 year old girls and genocide on camera. There are more of these moments, too many to list. Watch this film.

An amazing western!
I really loved the real time aspect here, a pacing intertwined with the great soundtrack by Dimitri Tiomkin. Talking about that, what a great theme song led by Tex Ritter's powerful voice!
The cinematography is great, the acting too... everything put together just makes a damn good movie.
A lot of people talk about the final clash, as anticlimax and all,
But I guess the the main message remains on one of the last shots.
Possibly the best western of all time. The final fight may be disappointing for some but it gets the message across well. It's really a satire on McCarthyism so it doesn't focus on action as much as a traditional Western would but the movie is genius. Fun Fact: the film is in real time, so if 5 minutes pass in the real world, then five minutes pass in the movie world as well.
Leatherface just looks off in this one. The first two he looked scary and this one the long hair kinda makes him almost normal. This was just a generic slasher. Viggo was good, interesting seeing him in one of his earlier roles.
My favorite film of the franchise. I enjoy the new family, the portrayal of Leatherface and the metal on the soundtrack. The protagonists are pretty obnoxious though. Still, it's a fun chainsaw movie.
A decent sequel, but definitely not as good as the first two films in the series. The film overall wasn't that interesting in my opinion, however there are some excellent scenes. Especially the scene towards the end, where the girl gets chased by Leatherface and decides to get here revenge by pushing a large rock against Leatherface to make him drown in the swamp. This film isn't perfect, but it is a decent sequel and pretty enjoyable.
This movie got infinitely better once the boyfriend died. Dear lord was he annoying from the jump.
A psychadelic polygon. An ethereal deodarant spray.
Cinema has adapted over time and each decade has brought something new, most notably the 70s for its crime stories and gangster obsessions or the 80s for the birth of outrageous science fiction - many would certainly say the definitive genre of current times is that of the superhero and while I think this to be true in the mainstream, I think this is also the time for the 'experience film'. It has almost become a cliché to say a movie is more an experience than an actual film now but that's only because there's so many of these movies. It's not the birth date of this 'genre' by any means, but now they seem to be everywhere, and films like High Life really sum up this generation's vision in the world of independent cinema. What does this say about our generation? I'm not sure, maybe we're all hippies pretending not to be, but what I do know is that films like this show just how far filmmaking can go. Despite the (literal) other-worldliness to this, I think it has actually inspired me to pick up my phone and just start filming things.

You can really see that Claire Denis is comfortable here, and these visuals are some of the most hypnotising I've seen for some time. It's utterly gorgeous but more importantly unique and took me to places I never thought I'd go - this film manages to make the image of semen running down someone's leg still look fascinating. It takes a garbage dump of imagery, then injects it with both a rainbow-coloured sex drive and Claire Denis' mind, transforming it into something so atmospheric and spacious that you really do feel like you've been released from Earth for a... well, a couple of hours? a day? a lifetime? The concept of time is forever challenged in this movie.
I just can't believe how liberating this was. A meditative process resulting in a discharge of fairy dust and a hug of deep relaxation that I am about to carry with me to sleep.
High Life is hypnotic rape, flavoursome murder and a deep blue ice cream cone. An ocean blue cone with no filling.
huh?
I have no idea what I just watched but I loved every second of it.
Difficult to do a non spoiler bit of text on this.
How much do we really care about other people?
Claire Denis' nihilistic sci-fi film is principality about morality, (de)humanization, social conscience and living in the now. But it's also about isolation, procreation, nature v nurture, carnal desires and incarceration. Early on, there is a conversation about taboos - the ending of the film certainly raises a few questions about that. There are even nods to sustainability and climate change. This film draws on influences of older films and is an ethereal, ambiguous experience. It is not an action based Sci-Fi thriller.
There are elements of Tarkovsky throughout, particularly' Stalker' and 'Solaris'. The themes of dogs may represent loyalty or master and slave type relationship. Comparisons with 'Annihilation', '2001' and 'Arrival' might also be made. It's violent, ascerbic and at times distressing. But it also has a real beauty about it, owing mostly to some superb cinematography from Yorick Le Saux and Tomasz Naumiuk.
Pattinson and Binoche are great, as they always are - but I thought Mia Goth stole the show as Boyse. This film will divide audiences but I thought it was an absolute gem.
8.6/10
Typical Koreeda movie: capturing calm scenes in perfection, making the viewer feel like he is in the middle of the presented characters, having a kind of weird, sad & yet happy feeling at the same time.
Still, "Nobody Knows" is more memorable, was based on a true happening and had been released 14 years earlier.
Koreeda deserves any price, but more for his entire filmography. His works were always close to be considered as a masterpiece. Except "Nobody Knows", because it is one.
The kind of film that gets under your skin, permeates your soul, and then steals your heart. Highly recommended.
From a certain aspect it is a fable about every coin has two sides or in other words nothing is fully black or white. The members of this family make dubious things in order to be able to eat, drink, wash themselves etc. or shortly to survive.
The perfect example which embodies this theory is the stoyline of Yuri. On the one hand, we can look at this like they kidnapped a child and later on taught her how to steal. On the other hand, they took a little girl in who was neglected by her parents. They looked after her, nurtured and cared for her and she became a member of this family who has nothing much but thenselves and they appreciate that little what they got. As Yuri was got back to her birth parents by the authorities she is treated like a pain in the ass by her mother. So, I ask the question: which family made her bad example exactly?
They give each other home, love and eventually an opportunity to the children to break out from that poor life situation.
