This episode shows how the two have grown closer, showed Ellie dealing with a problem on her own (two including Joel), and is world building showing some of the groups of people that have come together after the “apocalypse.”

@martlet the show, not inly in the text but also in interviews with the show-runners, is about love and the things we do for love (good and terrible) and to protect the ones we love.
Bill is a paralel to joel and frank to ellie. Opening up the others hearts and letting love in. On closed off by his own closeted homophobia and paranoia and the other from trauma and loss of his child. Both pragmatic and overly serious not letting others in (joel didn’t even let tess in for all the years they where together)
The episode shows also how post apocalypse we don’t have to sacrifice our humanity. To do more that just surviving but to actually live and care for the things around us. And for art, and beauty.
The letter at the end really activate joel in the quest to protect ellie. He has failed to protect his daughter and as reminded, tess. It tells him that life with purpose is possible and it’s mostly someone else. And that they, both, would do anything to protect the ones they care about… and i pity the fool who stand on their way (foreshadowing what joel is going to do in the end)
There are many more reasons why this episode matters in the context of the show but a not unimportant one is that it was beautiful and a good story and telling it was something they wanted to do and was worth it… maybe not to you but for many others, apparently.
I could have skipped this episode and missed nothing.

@antiwoke Stop playing victim. No one cares about your delusional anti-woke bullshit. And yeah, sometimes life is unfair. Sort of like how you unfairly hate on people for their sexual orientation. The people you are homophobic towards don't choose their sexuality. But you being an asshole towards them, well that is a choice. A choice you deserve to be called out for. A fantastic short film that’s bound to become the major highlight of this season for most, while also likely to trigger some mentally deficient adults.
One of its best qualities is that you could in theory tell this story with a straight couple , and it wouldn’t lessen any of its emotional impact.
It’s such an original, creative angle for a zombie apocalypse show, and Nick Offerman/Murray Bartlett both deliver career best performances here. If their section was a bit more fleshed out, I genuinely think you could make a great indie/arthouse film out of it.
I also love how it portrays a hardcore Republican character without making him some incapable buffoon, we don’t get enough of that in movies and tv.Ps: I’m pretty sure they used an existing piece of music during the marriage montage , I’ve heard it before but can’t quite place where it’s from

If you are referring to the music around minute 56: it is "on the nature of daylight " and it has been used in multiple movies like Arrival and Shutter Island .
