I might be biased but I thought this was a complete waste of my time !
YES this is beautiful, YES there is some action and YES the aliens (and gory scenes) are great in this movie, but well...
I'm not spoiling there but : how can a crew responsible for 2000+ lives in a colony mission be so incompetent ?
I know the whole point of Alien films is to mix human errors and bad luck to make bad times, but this is just too much !
Overall, the scenario was quite hollow.
I'll be spoiling a bit from now on :
really the only enjoyable moments were brought by the Synthetic stranded on the planet, this old generation David who served Dr Shaw was the only one bringing a bit of character depth, in the end I only wished he would "win" and was pleased to see that that's what happened.
The complete lack of responsibility from the crew was numbing : who would risk losing a spacecraft with thousands of souls onboard waiting to create a colony in a raging storm just to hope to have a contact with his half ? Who would again risk all colonists' lives and decades of preparations just to visit a planet they barely know anything of, just because they received a lost transmission of some singing ?
I know these are classic ways to bring this kind of situation in films, but the way it was brought was not subtle in the least.
In the end, while it was pretty clear for me that they had returned with the wrong David, this was the only really enjoyable moment.
Again, I'm encouraging everyone reading me to see for themselves and make their opinion, but for me this was a miss.
got in with no expectations, got out with Parasite as one of the best movies I saw this year !

I didn't find it REALLY good, but I enjoyed it nonetheless !
the main problem (sorry) are the actors... especially Jennifer Lawrence ! Don't go watch it if you want a serious SF movie !
I didn't count the number of times there were "sexy" shots on her body, but at the end I was like "come on ! Not again !"
Also for physics friends, the director made quite a good job ! Of course, there are some flaws but there is a lot of actual physical content, so the ship, the technology and everything is not pure imagination (or wandering).
also I'm still wondering some things, like why is there only a single medical pod or bartender for 5200+ people ? Why there is still a need for propulsion when you keep at 50% of light speed ? What a glass preventing humans from being roasted by a fusion reactor is made of ? How strong Chris Pratt really is to make an amount of force equivalent to the force with which he got ejected by the energy of that reactor, simply by throwing a door ?
Finally, the music is fair and the design is good, the only big problem here is too much romance but hey, that's what people want now ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Actually, I really enjoyed this movie : the plot is pretty simple but there are some good laughs and the overall feeling is pleasant.
I'm reviewing this with some time between now and the moment I saw it, and I don't have an awesome memory for this kind of thing, but I must say I spent a good evening.
This is neither overcomplicated or hollow, this is just a simple and efficient plot, I suggest you see it if you want to make your own opinion.
I have never seen such a clean animation movie, the drawing and animation is just breathtaking !
I didn't really know what to wait from this film, as I just had this film in my list and I didn't know Shinkai. I saw Kimi no na wa a couple of days before and realised I had this film from him in my list, so decided to give it a go. I'm not such a fan of romances, but I have to admit I really enjoyed it !
the background of each character is shown piece by piece throughout the film, slowly revealing them, with numerous (maybe too much ?) shots showing the city or the scenery to keep the pace slow but steady.
the music is quite good, with sang parts and instrumentals, I must say I was fond of the atmosphere.
I was surprised by the length, but I have to admit that it prevents the film from being sluggish and boring.
Clearly, I'm rating this a 9 for the drawing style and the atmosphere, while I would rate the overall story a 7-8, great work !
I was really surprised by the quality of the shots we got to see (especially water physics and skin representation), you can really assess how much we have improved with imagery technology !
Other than this, I really enjoyed this movie : the story was great, the universe refreshing and the music was not overwhelming (I have built a grudge against music for the sake of movie-selling since Moana), instead it was a good opening into mexican culture !
The characters were also really touching, there is only one point that annoyed me : the dog
This dog is one of the representation of the will of Disney/Pixar to create generic films : the film has to have hardship, friends, an enemy, songs that will get stuck in your head and a mindbogglingly numb companion : this was the case in Moana with the chicken, and this is the case here with the dog. I don't really hate this dog, it is funny and all... But do we always have to endure this kind of easy jokes ?
Anyway, in the end I still loved the movie, and encourage you to go see it !

I'm not really difficult, but the story in itself was quite weak...
The beginning is not that bad, but I really hated the ending : everything is unnatural, messy and poor.
This is not really a spoiler but
spending more than an hour in a burning (wooden) house without even caring is what I would call a terrible realisation...
In the end ? If you like thriller-like stories with a bit to think about (but really not much) and you don't search for something else, you can give it a try, but this was a waste of my time.
I'm waiting for vehement replies to this comment, but this gave me a very bitter taste to the opus so far : what made the force of the first film was left behind in this one : no coherence in the world building (yeah, sure, multiverse), poor and bland scenario, almost no character building (didn't see Wanda vision, so I might be biased here, but prove me wrong)...
The only things that might try to save the film are some very good (yet isolated) realisation ideas, and maybe a lot of references to other external works

Unfortunately, I watched it in french, so I don't know yet about the english version, I expect it to be better (and I hope) as the sentences and songs were poor...
Some good parts though : amazing work on graphics, light, movement... hats off to that !
They used some jokes WAY too much, but still made me laugth from time to time !
Seriously though... this chicken... PLEASE ! This was funny for the first 15 minutes, then it became exasperating to see the same joke over and over again...
In the end, the main idea was quite good, but the unfolding was sloppy
The cast and the effects are probably the only two things that will make you watch this movie !
The rythm is off, the shots are often predictable or boring, the overall scenario and scenes are dull...
This was maybe not necessary, but it gives the serie a better end than the third.
the scenario is good, the art is (as always) excellent and you will spend a good time watching it, laughing and following the toys' tricks and mishaps !
this was a movie I really enjoyed growing up, and I just saw it again after so much time...
well I didn't remember how good it was and still is ! you wouldn't even believe it was made in 2005 seeing how good it has aged !
the story is nice, characters are well-written, with a great topic and conclusion !

I got out of the theatre with a rather negative idea about this film.
But after speaking it out with my friends, I have to agree on a point : this film has to not be taken seriously, then you start really enjoying it.
The scenario has some twists, the cast is rather good, but the overall is NOT that great, what gives it a plus is the way it tends to mock itself.
Horrorly speaking (yeas I will say that), there are some jump scares, worrying shots and stressful music, but the atmosphere quickly turns into action, humour and romance.
That might be an evidence for others, but this is more of a comedy on horror movies than a real horror movie.
I recommend seeing it casually with friends if you're bored and want to have a good laugh, because you can really enjoy most parts of it

I saw Alien Covenant some time ago, so I will compare it quite a lot with this film, sorry.
This movie... In my opinion, is better made than Alien :
- The decisions of the crew, despite being wrong at some times, are still understandable given the circumstances. I know there isn't THAT MUCH of a difference between Life and Alien Covenant, but I think what's important is how you feel about the overall credibility of their actions
- The behaviour of the creature is slightly different : while Aliens are killing machines, Calvin is "only" trying to survive (while retaliating when attacked, of course). Some clues are given throughout the film to support this idea.
- The setting is realistic, with the ISS, existing technologies, good physics...
For the realisation in itself, it is quite well done : the shots are great, the music and atmosphere works well (if not outstanding) and the acting is convincing !
I'm feeling a bit dumb though, because I didn't really guess the very end... I thought about it, but seeing as it went without them being abnormally stressed out (well David had still a hard time), I thought they had preferred a happy ending...
HOW NAIVE !!
Still... this gave me a good laugh when I realised they really switched trajectories, this was the icing on the cake !!
Anyway !
Overall i spent a great time, and this made me forget I was ill for some time !
Years after watching this movie -- when it was already an old classic -- and still one of the best french movies: great casting, amazing dialogs, a catchy theme and didn't get bad with time, on the contrary!
A must see!
Won't comment on some things, as I wasn't even remotely born when the film released (inconsistencies, jump cuts...), but this is a huge disappointment : poor scenario, poor dialogues (at least in French), over-the-top scenes of action (this is not action-packed, this is action-stuffed-and-put-some-more-again level material) and overall uninteresting.
Action movies are supposed to be simple and efficient, not dumb and unbalanced.
I don't want to talk about character's depth...
This is an amazing serie, both by its gripping realisation and its accurate depiction of the disaster
The trailer and synopsis might not be the most flattering for this movie, but I actually enjoyed it !

I rarely give bad ratings, but this one deserves a horrible one : the acting is bad, the choice of actors is bad, the scenario is modified (which can be good for an adaptation) but nothing stands together...
Ok, I admit the special effects were good (some parts I didn't like, but the work is still great), but come on, stop doing crappy movies with series many enjoyed just to expect heavy cash !
I'm fed up with show-off movies with incredible budget in special effects and advertising, but sh*tty realisation...
Anyway, that was just me discharging my hatred towards recent movie industry, don't take my words too seriously and just see for yourself, you may enjoy it

a lot of jokes and funny moments (maybe a bit too much) for a fair result
left me with the impression of what a good marvel movie could be (the "could" here is just to emphasize that it's not the only way Marvel films are great, I found the efforts made here to be quite relevant to the spirit of the franchise)
Anyway, I'm not a big Marvel fan nor a film expert, so don't take my words as the Holy Truth and see for yourself !
definitely one of the best stories I have seen in animes, I read the books some time ago and wanted to give the anime a try, and I must say it really gives life to it !!
I didn't put a 10 because some points are bothering me throughout the story and it's not the best production, but I totally love the universe !!

One of my friend showed me a trailer about this film, and it was hilarious !
But once in, you discover an empty shell of bad jokes, poor acting and scenaristic nonsense...
This was not supposed to be a big production, with great funds and tremendous casting, but it misses the simpleness and efficiency it should have had.
I'm actually sad, because it could have been so much better than that...
the animation, character design, drawing, light, humour, music... All of this is just simply superb !!
I've had some trouble getting into the scenario (too fast, too messy, with a world and characters not exploited), but I have to take my hat off to the realisation, just done overwhelmingly well.
Despite this, I still have some reserves concerning the story, the beginning was just way too fast, the characters throughout the season were not developed enough (if developed) and the ending was one hell of a mess (in the bad term : a suit of events occurring without any sense whatsoever).
Still, I'll be watching season 2, which I hope will come as it is announced.

I believe I really want complicated stories, with harrowing deaths... But the answer of this show lies in its simplicity !
The different steps of the journey are still great, and after having watched Cowboy Bebop, I must say I really enjoy his style !
Of course, the production is still amazing, with great soundtracks and design !
