Dolly Kitty and Those Twinkling Stars

Wish I could rate it higher cause I love Konkona but this movie was just so dull.

Tokyo Ghoul

Not the best live action adaptation but not the worst either. The casting was pretty well-done with Kubota giving his all as Kaneki and he somehow managed to make him even crazier. The CG was pretty good and the direction too, it's a good watch for someone who loves the whole Tokyo Ghoul franchise.

Boku no Aruku Michi

What a beautiful drama! Left me sobbing at the end of almost every ep and by far one of the best portrayals of autism I've seen in the media.

Overprotected Kahoko

Lovely little drama about a sheltered girl and her overprotective parents. Watch this for warm fuzzies and legit such a good male lead and the female lead is the most adorable girl.

So heartwarming! Seeing Mugino and Kahoko as a married couple with realistic challenges is so satisfying.

The Naked Director

Didn't think I'd enjoy this show as much as I did, of course it's very graphic and I found myself forwarding the more explicit content but there's a dark humour in this series that makes it fun to watch. Equal parts absurd and sometimes very real, naked director is well worth a watch.

Shoplifters

The master of cute-kids-in-tragic-circumstances has done it again! Koreeda is a master of directing children and bringing out these amazing mature performances and Shoplifters is no different. This movie explores the concept of whether family is what you're born into or the people you choose. It's about two abandoned children who are raised by a less than exemplary family which teaches them to steal and deceive but dammit these people have so much love to give and they share what little they've got. It makes you wonder who's in the wrong here and whether we can even know for sure. Koreeda has an extensive filmography and yet I want more, I can only hope he continues making such wonderful movies and he deserves all the accolades.

Nobody Knows

This movie destroyed me emotionally, not in the uncontrollable crying way but that sinking feeling in my heart before it got ripped out and stomped over. I don't think I want to watch this movie again but it's definitely worth watching if you can handle it.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Hilarious in its own weird way, you'll appreciate it more if you're familiar with Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry's brand of humour.

Welcome

I went into this movie expecting it to be very predictable and the typical migrant story. While welcome isn't necessarily ground-breaking, it does a good job of dramatizing the plight of refugees and showing how they are perceived by the people around them. Bilal is a 17 year old who hopes to cross the English channel to reunite with his girlfriend, as difficult as the task seems and he's determined to make it no matter the obstacles he faces. Although the story is slightly predictable, you do root for him to make it and the ending does catch you by surprise. Watch this if you want something though-provoking but easy to watch.

The Band's Visit

First of all, this movie's hilarious. The humour isn't laugh out loud funny but very witty and subtle. No matter how different your background the emotions we all feel sre the same, I liked the way the movie conveyed this message. I liked the message the movie was trying to convey, it wasn't trying to shove it in your face but you understand through the way the characters interact. Just like the town itself, this movie's very peaceful and you feel far removed from everything while watching it. My one complaint would be: I wish there was some sort of resolution for the multiple storylines but just like in real life all the people you meet don't have to have some grand purpose in your life. This movie isn't epic and neither is it trying to be but I would rewatch it if I want a funny and thoughtful movie to watch.

Salam Neighbor

Salam neighbor is a documentary about 2 American filmmakers who go live in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan for a month. They record the stories of the refugees as well as what life is like in the refugee camp. This is a very humane movie, the filmmakers don't patronise their subjects nor do they make them look helpless. Living as a refugee is a sub-human existence but rather than showing what we already know, this documentary shows how these people are getting around their limitations. The refugees choose to exert some control over their lives whether it is through refashioning plastic bags into jewellery or helping others through the trauma. What happened to these people is tragic but this movie tries to go beyond that and offer some hope. I wish this documentary would receive more recognition because it makes a great case in favour of refugees.

Gomorra

This is by far one of the best tv shows in its genre. It doesn't romanticise these criminals nor does it provide excuses for their actions. It's just the brutal reality of their lives that everything they've worked for will end in a violent death. Sure you might root for Ciro or Genny but this show doesn't shy away from showing just how psychotic these gangsters are and all the suffering they cause.

Don't let the subtitles put you off, this is one of the best tv shows you can ever watch.
