another great show from Netflix, i liked it more than i thought i would. just wish it had more episodes!
An adaptation of a Margaret Atwood book, written and co-produced by Sarah Poley, great cast - my expectations were high. These are my thought on watching the first episode: Sarah Gadon's acting is a little stilted and although the dialogue is good, it's staccato delivery can rob it of its wealth. The production design is rather sparse, accentuating the bleakness of the piece, but the potential is there for some great storytelling. I give it a cautious 6 (fair) out of 10, [Crime, Drama]
**Upon finishing, I am leaving my rating as 6 (fair) out of 10. The ending left questions unanswered (unless the title itself is the answer), so, as to storytelling, the satisfaction of a mystery was flawed. As this is based on a true story the themes carry the burden of the piece: the defilement of the powerless, and those bleak tones resound in delivery, setting and production. The acting was disappointing with the exception of Zachary Levi and Paul Gross. It's always good to hear from Margaret Atwood and Sarah Poley, but curiosity sustained me to persevere to the end and satisfaction was deferred.*
in short the pacing of each episode and the season as a whole is all wrong.
wasting too much time to getting to the point, next to no fight scenes comparing to other shows like this in the season.
all fights and action filled scenes are over all too quickly.
a character and actor that was lovable in Jessica Jones is now in need of a bitch slap most of the season.
its sad really, you have a powerful character that can slap everyone out in this show. yet he uses most of his time (the little we see of him sometimes) feeling sad for those around him and himself instead of take action.
while the comic characters history has alot to do with the subject of race and color.
bringing all of this into a series in a ham-fisted way isnt the way to go.
most of the time me and my friend was watching this we where wanting more action, more of the main character and more of a villan that we care about.
when i can say with good heart that daredevil and any comic show out now beats this by miles and miles.
when the pacing is so off that you think you are watching a double episode but its really just a 40min one then its something wrong.
when you feel like this episode takes forever to be done then its something wrong.
i watch all the comic shows out and i love them all (except this and agents of shield)
its sad really, as i LOVED his character in Jessica Jones.
Better Call Billy
Goliath starts interesting but needs a firm cutting. There is too much unnecessary fluff. I love Billy Bob Thornton though. He really holds this series together, the other actors are fine but not more.
I was waiting with anticipation for this latest Netflix contribution to the Marvel universe, and SO wanted it to be good. Daredevil was superb (9), Jessica Jones started slow then pulled up to great (8), But Luke Cage never got out of the gate. It spent far too much time in narrative and scrimped on creating tension, suspense, and building relationships and producing action. It had all elements of success - the Marvel world to build on, a great black cast (with some serious potential sizzle), the identifiable microcosm of Harlem, even the availability of good jazz (which was used to epic failure as they imposed it on the scenes rather than weaving it into the story telling). Disappointed, I give the series a 5 (meh) out of 10, and I faithfully watched every episode, and re watched the ones through which I fell asleep.
This show could have been so much. It could have made a statement. I'm so disappointed, not gonna watch it again. The main protagonist is very brawny, timid perhaps. Common sense is totally missing. The philosophy is low brow. Doesn't inspire neither does it provide entertainment. 5/10.
Quite a dull show. Wasn't too entertained.
Tatiana Maslany is so underrated, what a brilliant actress.
I don't understand why everyone likes this show so much, it was really bad I just wanted each episode to end. Their was no suspense at all yet rotten tomatoes gave it a 95% really, it was trash just garbage the acting the fight all lame. So can some one explain to me why everyone likes it so much?
no no no its nothing like Girls whatsoever girls is bad !!! this show is much much much better and genuinely funny the writing is so witty & hilarious and the cast is brilliant totally recommended
It's the new Downton Abbey but so so SOOOOO much better.
The story is really interesting and I admire the original author but the show was kind of boring. At some points it had interesting kind of twists where you wanted to continue watching but otherwise it felt… flat somehow.
This show is absurd. Each episode is more preposterous than the one before it. If quality writing is important to you then skip this.
Great atmosphere, okay performance from the good guys of the show (Misty is pretty awesome the whole time), good managing of relevant-to-our-times themes and hell of a superb soundtrack (especially in the first half of the season, kind of disappeared in the second half), but it's also so damn slow, lacks suspense, going always in a turtle pace with a damaged storytelling, corny dialogues and horrible, just horrible villains (actors as well as characters). Still better than the quite awful Jessica Jones. I'm devastated by the realization that the more edgy a marvel series strives to be the worst it is in reality while the somewhat conservative christian white man superhero is the better one of them all. Shame.
