Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Terrible acting by most (although they are kids, after all).

On the other hand, this is the part of the Potter story where things get interesting - the first appearance of a horcrux, a peek into Voldemort’s past etc.

Ocean's Twelve

Not as easy to follow as Ocean’s Eleven in my opinion, making it less enjoyable. The reveal of how the heist actually went down was rather disappointing and felt very disconnected from the rest of the film. Nothing felt remotely ‘grand’ about it, unlike the heist of the first film.

Julia Roberts playing someone pretending to be Julia Roberts though, now that was entertaining and unconventional.

Dune

Chalamet again fulfills his usual broody character role, leading the cast in a gritty and authentic world.

The only qualm I had was the ending, as I didn't feel it was particularly solid, and I was left with no sense of direction for where the narrative will go in Part 2.
This may have been a result of watching the film after a full day of work, however - dialogue and details slipping past me. A second viewing on a weekend may be in order.

Despite feeling left in the dark, I look forward to my return to the world of Arrakis.

47 Meters Down

Unfortunately, apart from learning that sharks are hella scary, I didn’t get much else out of this.

Whiny characters with illogical decisions (looking at you, Lisa). And, I’m not an expert, but I swear the sharks would’ve gobbled them up in reality with the number of opportunities they were given.

A lot of tension and heart-raising moments, however, which worked well for the film.

Fever Dream

I feel there wasn’t much to this film, it seemed to lack a strong narrative. No other complaints, but that point alone was enough to deduct a fair amount from my rating.

On the other hand, I was a fan of the present dialogue between the two characters, as the past events are retold throughout the film.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Just as brilliant as the first.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

A little hard to follow the motives behind everyone - which seem to chop and change - but this is a pirate narrative after all, so it’s rather apt.

Other than that, yet another great continuation of grimy pirate adventure with some hearty chuckles thrown into the mix.

News of the World

A film with beautiful scenery, following the adventures of Captain Kidd (a truly wholesome character, in true Tom Hanks fashion), this film makes me want to jump back in time into the wild west during the 19th century, so I can explore the dusty plains and wilderness for myself.

The only element I found this film lacking in was action; more of it may have kept me on the edge of my seat to a greater extent. Although the shootout included was an enjoyable one, and besides, Captain Kidd doesn't seem the kind of person who resorts to violence unless being forced to.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Perhaps one of the best adventure films I’ve seen. And (Captain) Jack Sparrow - perhaps one of the most charismatic and loveable protagonists to ever grace (or, more aptly, stumble around in) a pirate film.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

A nice bit of backstory to the origins of Vesemir, Geralt’s father figure.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

That twist about the ‘Everything is Awesome’ origin at the end was all I needed.

Not as good as the first, but still a fun watch.

Gemini Man

A mediocre action film; all aspects staying roughly in the middle of the good-to-bad spectrum - nothing particularly groundbreaking nor unique.
But, nonetheless, it was still enjoyable. Even if I don’t think it has any rewatch value.

The Lighthouse

Insanity, broken spirits, sailor cursing - pure madness. Pattinson’s and Dafoe’s nutty performances were brilliantly convincing.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Lovely visuals, as I’ve come to expect from Illumination Entertainment. Shame about the shallow story.

Left me confused as to why an overly timid dog had a weird passion for being fatherly towards a human kid in an unhealthy-looking way. That dog needs therapy.

Animal Crackers

Bright and cheerful with an adorably quirky art style.
This film made me want to be a kid again - waking up at 6am on Saturdays just to watch cartoons!

But god, is Mackenzie an annoying, whiny child.

I lost it when Ian McKellen said, “Fly, you fool!”.

Aladdin

On par with the original, in my opinion. Brilliant music, colourful and exotic visuals, and laughs abound.

Will Smith was a perfect cast for the Genie, level to Robin Williams’ performance.

These live-action Disney remakes - I think people are seeing them as an attack on their treasured originals. They may feel sentimental towards the 20th century animations (myself included), but these remakes don’t have to be treated as replacements! Give both versions a chance as individual entries.

Polaroid

A film about an asthmatic monster created with the same amount of imagination employed by a prison architect, where teens make irrational decisions (I know they’re going through puberty, but still) and the height of bullying is being called ‘Scarf Girl’.

I was completely un-invested; I didn’t feel a single thing for any of the characters, no matter what befell them.

Coco

Colourful and artistic, the warm visuals of this film will make you feel like you’re in sunny Mexico yourself.

I didn’t find the narrative particularly compelling or special, but the twist towards the end was pleasant, invoking an “Oh, didn’t see that coming!” moment.

And great music! I downloaded the soundtrack as soon as the credits started to roll.

Spies in Disguise

It seems I will never fail to be left feeling irritated by Tom Holland. We were supposed to feel sympathy for Walter, but I just found him too annoying to care.

I found this film too cheesy and the laughs too cheap for my liking - it seemed to lack in intelligence (the irony). I did enjoy the creativity in the gadgets, though. Although I do wish they weren’t as pathetic.

Not overly impressed.

Jackie

What a remarkable woman. Truly, truly tragic.

A great representation of what Jackie had to deal with. Although from an entertainment perspective, I found this film slightly lacking.
Nonetheless, I watched it mostly to be educated in the historical event surrounding it; I feel it delivered in that respect.

Marriage Story

Authenticity at its finest. Phenomenal acting, portraying raw emotion about an extremely trying stage some people go through in their lives.

Not a perfect film, however. I do wish the opening ‘What I love about you’ scene was extended, so we became more familiar with the happy Charlie and Nicole. I think this would have served the film well, deepening the attachment and emotion we feel for them throughout the divorce.

Despite how depressing this sounds, the big verbal fight between the (ex) couple was the highlight of the film. Rarely have I seen such credible and deep emotion in a performance. I was transfixed.
I wish we saw more of this kind of atmosphere throughout the downward spiral of the divorce process.

Have I Got News for You: 65x01 Charlie Brooker, Miles Jupp, Charlotte Ivers

Highlight of the episode:

Said in an exasperated tone: “Oh Ian, what have you done?”

Midsommar

If you’re after weird, this has you covered…and then some.

This is horror done well. There is no darkness, no creepiness and, (thank the lord), there isn't a cheap jump scare in sight. This type of horror is made up of…well…pure horror. Horrific ceremonies, horrific traditions, horrific visuals, horrific drug misusage, and no escape in near-constant broad daylight while your friends drop off around you one-by-one.

It doesn’t sound scary, but if this film doesn’t leave you with a sickening feeling of horror, I don’t trust you.

One last mention - I love how effortlessly this film makes me feel someone else’s pain. Especially so early on after the first tragic event.

The Little Mermaid

Very catchy music, colourful characters, and I imagine the animation was impressive in the year this film was released.
Despite that, I don’t feel I can give this film additional points for visuals when compared to the modern lineup of Disney animations.

Free Guy

The usual Reynolds charm, this time in video game style. Will never attack an NPC unprovoked again (joking, it’s too fun).

Interesting themes of free will, artificial intelligence, and corporate greed.

The Strangers

No depth to the film whatsoever. Character development was minimal, but I guess that’s to be expected for a horror film taking place over a single night, and I doubt depth was the aim.
More obtrusive, however, were some of the characters’ seemingly improbable decisions.

Annoyingly, jump scares were arguably depended on for a few scenes. But despite this, the film was still effectively scary and increased my heart rate through anticipation and creepiness alone. Jump scares were unnecessary - the heart-in-mouth moments should have been capitalised on instead.

Awake

Interesting premise, poor execution.

Apocalyptic settings are ripe opportunities for creativity, but this seemed to lack it entirely.
I would’ve loved to see more on the effects of sleep deprivation, but an all-out military rampage seems to be all we see (aside from sleepy faces).

I was left feeling unsure whether this film was more so to do with an electrical outage or sleep deprivation, as we are shown more effects of the former, despite the film’s title.

In my opinion, this film would’ve had better potential if the electrical outage had been left out entirely and the sleep deprivation was focused on instead. Maybe more creativity would’ve been encouraged.

Top Gun

Highly recommended if you have a surround sound setup, the jets and the music will blow your backside off.

RIP Goose, although I wish I were made to feel a bit more devastated about his death. The film kind of moved on from the emotion surrounding it very fast, and I didn’t feel connected to him well enough to feel a proper blow.

But I don’t think this film is suited for emotions anyway - it’s all about the visual and audio awe. And being reckless.

Ocean's Eleven

A clever heist with a somewhat satisfying reveal at the end. I’m just dying to know how they spent their money.

‘All right chaps, hang onto your knickers’

Basher’s cockney accent was horrific! I’m glad he didn’t have any more lines than he did, even if he was slightly amusing.

CODA

An interesting insight into the struggles of an almost entirely deaf family. It is clear that growing up as the spokesperson of your family whilst simultaneously being the youngest member would be a challenge.

The beauty of the film is boosted by Ruby’s pretty vocals, once she comes out of her shell, and there are few comparisons for something more heartwarming than a family working things out and a character breaking the chains to pursue their dreams.

Nothing uniquely special, but it’ll still hit you in the feels now and then.
