House: 3x24 Human Error

Patient (after near-death experience): “Is this heaven?” — House: “No, it’s New Jersey.”

House: 1x16 Heavy

Many have observed that House, M.D. is a version of Sherlock Holmes, but this episode shows how well it is conceived. At some point of the show the patient gets very mad about what the staff is doing. It seems to be an insignificant detail which has nothing to do with the illness, but it is, indeed, a side effect of the underlying problem (no spoiler here!). So it is a small piece of evidence (although unused in the plot). It shows how well informed the authors are and that a lot of clues are laid out for the spectators to guess what is going on.

Manufacturing Ignorance

This is a must-see documentary about fake in science. It is mainly about how big industrial players intervene in scientific research in order to confuse the public to their advantage.

Although I'm not a particular fan of the main actors, I liked the movie. It is appealing for those of us who like escape games. I did some guessing as well and had a feeling where the high-end prison is minutes before the main character found out (I think this was intended by the script). I like movies where you can take part in the guessing.

Old Land

I have been told that the second part is easier to follow, but after the confusing first part, I don’t feel like continuing. So I just refer you to my review of part one: I suspect that the film editing suppressed some crucial information or mixed the episodes in a way that the storyline got lost.

Old Land: 1x01 Arrive

I gave up after the first part. The story is very confusing due to the mix of episodes from different times. There is some good acting, but I just couldn’t figure out how one episode is linked to another. And I couldn’t see how some characters fit into the overall plot. Perhaps, one has to read the book in order to understand the story. I got the impression that the film editing messed the story up, because some scenes with crucial information seem to be missing.

Daddyhunt: The Serial: Season 1

This is a charming short series of 5 min episodes about normal gay men being in love. It’s refreshing and pleasant. Of course, it is low-budget, the story isn’t outstanding, and the acting is far from being great, but it is lovable. Most of the dialogues remind me of situations I’ve been in myself. Some of them are awkward, but in the end they always turn out in a feel-good way. I recommend this series as a pastime entertainment.

Oblivion

I avoided this movie for quite some time, mainly because I’m not a big fan of Tom Cruise (I resent his support for Scientology), but the movie is worthwhile. There are some loose ends in the story, but it is overall convincing. The turn-around in the story line is credible (and good!). Andrea Riseborough’s acting is so good that it gives you a foreboding feeling from the beginning, even if her text is perfectly neutral. I liked that a lot! And there are more surprises in the story. The ending is not totally convincing, but can be forgiven. Landscape views and soundtrack are very impressive. It’s definitely a big-screen movie!

Biohackers

This show reminds me of the film Anatomy II, but with a female villain. All in all it is good entertainment. Some scenes are barely credible, e.g. how Jasper finds out that the others are going to Berlin (the spectators don’t know about that). I suppose German series need better authors. The authors research on biohacking was rather superficial. On the other hand, I liked the sound track and the music.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

I liked this movie better than its predecessors, although I am still very unsatisfied about the depiction of the dinosaurs: Archeopteryx and theropods (T-Rex and velociraptors, e.g. the important main velociraptor Blue) were feathered. Not so in Jurassic World. No explanation is given why this is so. I'm pretty sure it is simply a mistake. As to archeopteryx: it could not fly as well as shown in the film. Most probably it could just glide from tree to tree. And it had feathers, of course!

Christopher and His Kind

The film is good. Unfortunately, there are some historical inaccuracies. The Cosy Corner is not located in a cellar, but is a street-corner pub. The double-s runes don’t belong on SA uniforms.
