Now You See Me

Worth watching once but not for repeating

The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys

A coming of age story in the vein of Stand By Me featuring a young Emile Hirsch and Kieran Culkin. One of those films that isn't trying too hard and relies on the authenticity of it's script and delivery of its actors. Not super light viewing but not too heavy wither. Would watch again and definitely recommend.

10 Things I Hate About You

Totally holds up. Light charming entertainment. I'll happily click it again some day.

Love, Simon

Charming teen rom com. There's nothing unmissable here but. it ticks the boxes of light and satisfying. Easy to watch and this likely I'll one day watch again. The lead Nick Robinson has got a laid back it factor.

It's crazy that this is the first major studio film to feature a gay romance.

Wild

A fairly quiet, understated film which will make you reflect on life. It's quite rewatchable when you want something a bit meditative . Not for everyone though.

Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off

I'm not a skateboarding fan and I enjoyed this documentary about the icon. I didn't know that skating had a heydey in the late seventies and eighties before a decline in the early 90s and then resurgence in the kate 90s with the X games. I would recommend to those who like sports bio docs. I wouldn't mind watching again one day.

Don't Worry Darling

This film is in the tradition of Stepford wives. Pugh plays a perfect 1950s housewife very much in love but senses something strange is afoot. I enjoyed the social commentary but if the film. It was okay once through but I wouldn't recommend or re-watch.

Elvis

7/10 - Fine but a letdown. I learned a lot about Levi's and how his manager basically took half of everything he made. I wish the film had more joy in it to counter the sadness though. Elvis's tremendous energy and spirit wasn't given enough airtime sans sadness which is a shame given that Butler is perfect casting.

As an adult, I found this fil. nite entertaining than I thought it would be. There were unexpected jokes as well as ones which were done so perfectly they worked even if expected. Will Ferrel's performance is exceptional. He finds so many levels of childlike enthusiasm, it's charming. I would recommend for family viewing which is palatable to adults. I'm not sure Id watch this again but a montage in YouTube would certainly make me smile.

Bullet Train

Feels like a Guy Ritchie film on Japan's bullet train. Fun characters and witty dialogue but ultimately I didn't care all that much about anyone and found the plot a bit convoluted (though I didn't watch it in one sitting TBF). I also would have liked more Asian characters. Would not especially recommend though it was fine.

Mona Lisa Smile

Such a watchable film. It's a light watch yet manages to consider extremely important issues. I've seen it a handful of times and will see it again I'm sure. it' suits a mood.

TÁR

Very interesting character study of a leading conductor who is exceptionally brilliant, pretentious, hard, and manipulative but also tender when she decides to give herself to a moment or a person. Reminiscent of Whiplash, although slightly less accessible to average person. The film is overrated though, especially since I the ending was rush and not quite earned. I would recommend if you liked Whiplash and I would personally re-watch.

Babylon

Babylon contains moments of cinematic brilliance, but is ultimately too chaotic, anxiety-inducing, and I Ng (3 hrs!) to be enjoyable. It's a grotesque absurdist take on 1920s Hollywood - think wild sex-ridden parties, underground freak shows, vomit, and multiple death or near-death experiences. Manny - a Mexican immigrant - gets swept up in the system, willingly sublimating his own identity. Margot Robbie plays an It Girl whose Jersey accent means she struggles to transition to talkies. Brad Pitt plays an actor based on John Gilbert whose career and reputation also declined when talkies arrived on the scene, partly due to his effected stage-like delivery. The Artist and Singin' in the Rain also based characters on Gilbert and the latter is directly tied to this film in multiple scenes and storylines.

From Wikipedia: The film polarized critics, who generally praised its cinematography, score, editing, production design, lead performances and themes, but were sharply divided on its direction, screenplay, graphic content, and runtime.

I would not generally recommend this film, but cinephiles will probably want to see it. There's so much amazing footage here, I'd love to see another editor take a pass and give us a more cohesive film.

The Lighthouse

Incredible performances. Very unique experiences. I don't know if I'd rewatch it, though, just because it's so anxiety-inducing.

The Devil All the Time

Great performances especially from Patttinson, worth a watch, but something a little lacking. I would rewatch though.

Tenet

Interesting plot but it's so complicated that there's little time left to make us care about the characters involved. Cool stunts and fights. Definitely worth a watch but not sure I'd rewatch it.

The Batman

Like most superhero pics, The Batman lacks character development, filling the time with an overcomplicated case to solve before taking the time to make us care about solving it. If you like Marvel films, I assume you'll like this and v.v.

Where the Crawdads Sing

This was alright z enjoyable enough once through but I wouldn't watch it again. Jones is a stellar actress but the script didn't allow the story to develop enough. There was too much focus on the trial and events leading up to it and not enough on her earlier life, which shaped who she is. The love story was kind of flat.

Dear Zoe

Disappointing adaptation of the YA nove about a girl who goes to live with her Dad after the death of her 2 year old half-sister Zoe. Sadie Sink is excellent but Kweku Collins falls flat as Jimmy, delivering lines with dead eyes and little intonation. What's more, while she was actually 17 playing 16, he looked like he was 25. The chemistry wasn't there, the connection wasn't built and the love between them wasn't earned. The dialogue was at times terrible. It's a shame. I liked the novel well enough (as an adult who occasionally enjoys YA fiction) and think this could have been a winner with better casting and more time devoted to the live story. Would not recommend.

Endless Love

The first half of the film is beautiful, a dreamy and intoxicating portrait of first love and two teenagers firsts sexual relationship. I found the second half less compelling. I'd rewatch for the first half when in a romantic mood.

McEnroe

Would not recommend. In better hands, this could have been great but the tennis journey was not well detailed or tied together and I didn't really feel let in to his inner world.

I Am Patrick Swayze

Nothing special or unmissable but perfectly watchable.

The Age of Innocence

Worth watching if you like the book.

Alice, Darling

A truthful portrayal of a woman suffering inside a toxic relationship. For me, there wasn't enough narrative to make it worth watching again. I'd only recommend to those who don't understand the dynamics at play and need an education.

loading replies
Margot at the Wedding

An interesting dialogue and character-driven piece from Noah Baumbach about two sisters with a toxic relationship. It's nothing of this world but solid and worth watching.

The Outsiders

Modern viewers may find this overdramatic at times with sudden shifts in tone but the heart of the film is timeless and makes this a film to rewatch every few years.

Cocaine Bear

Loosely inspired by a true story of a bear who comes across bricks of coke in the woods!Imagine Jaws but instead of a super extra shark on the attack, it's a coked up bear in a national park. And it's mainly a comedy, but with Jaws-like suspense elements.

90 min, super fast-paced, LOL funny, constantly surprising. There are so few comedies that deliver for me, so this is a strong recommendation.Brava, Elizabeth Banks.
