Script was written by a 12 year old. Effects by bootleg Michael Bay. Nice try to milk some money and good job for ruining franchise.
Wow this was awful. Very disappointed.
I loved Tony Lip, he was an adorable, affectionate and funny person. I love that he has always been hungry. LOL
The friendship between them was beautiful. They learned a lot from each other and grew up as better people.
What do you get when you cross The Matrix with an interdimensional-cable episode of Rick and Morty? You get what you fucking deserve… and by that, I mean Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Look, there are several reviews of this movie, and for good reason, so I want to come at this from a different angle.
At its core, this is a family drama. Don't be mislead by the kung fu, and multiversal madness; this is actually just a brilliant method of getting you to sit through a story about a woman (Evelyn) learning how to break the chains of generational trauma, that she is unconsciously passing onto her daughter (Joy/Jobu Tupoki).
Our Evelyn is full of guilt and regret, she feels trapped in an unfulfilling life with a husband (Waymond) she blames for leading her there. Evelyn would likely be happy with her life, but having not entirely individuated from her father (Gong Gong) - who loves his daughter, but it is a conditional love (in one scene he even uses the words "always," and "never" in the same sentence to chastise Evelyn).
Waymond - who is the true hero of this story - is a kind soul, who is full of love, but even he falls prey to bad programming that leave him unable to communicate his feeling to Evelyn in a healthy way - e.g., serving her divorce papers in an attempt to shock her into listening to his unmet needs; this is what is known as protest behavior. This is really no ones fault here, no one is taught how to properly set boundaries or talk about feelings/needs in a healthy manner.
The final, and in a way, most important part of this is Joy/Jobu Tupoki. On her surface, Jobu seems like an existential nihilist - and in the movie reality, she is - however, she is really the accumulated depression of a multiverse worth of Joys who are fighting to be accepted by their mother. The bagel she has formed is futility, suicidal ideation, despair, hopelessness.
No one chose the trauma they have had to endure. It’s not your fault. We are the products of parents who did not understand this, no one teaches this to use. Until someone finally sees the damage done and works to be the change, it will never end.
The movie demands more than one watch, otherwise you haven’t actually seen it.
