Fairy Tail

If you watch this, keep in mind the target audience of the show. It is 100% intended for children. Sure you can argue that Avatar the Last Airbender was also targeted for children, but ATLA is an outlier among a sea of children's shows. The story is average, the fighting scenes are pretty good, and it is simply just entertaining when you are running your brain at like 5% capacity. Among all the other children's Anime I've seen, this one has been one of the best.

Charlotte

I'm going to preface this by saying I am absolutely in love with 90% of Key's visual novel adaptations. Charlotte is one of the most interesting Anime's I've seen in a while. My biggest complaint is that character development happens at a rapid pace to focus on the story acceleration (which has proven common among Key Animes). The end result is that a character can go from 0-100 over the course of an episode or from sociopath to Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Charlotte has a similar setting to My Hero Academia, but the feel of the Anime couldn't be more different. There is so much more character in this Anime which makes it blur the line between a slice of life and an action Anime. This story got so much deeper and stronger as it progressed while My Hero Academia just touts the same theme over and over again, only keeping viewers around for the action.

Overall, I'd greatly recommend this Anime. It was short and could've been much more, but it was still very strong in its own right.

Charlotte: 1x01 I Think of Others

I’d say this was actually a really good first episode. The main character reminded a lot of Light from Death Note, he was cunning and manipulative in a self-serving way. It sets up what could be a nice redeeming arc where he realizes how his manipulations can affect and hurt others.

Rent-a-Girlfriend

It was good, the primary guy was quite unlikeable at the start and it made hard to really get into for the first few episodes. Mami is portrayed as quite a sociopath 24/7 which I think the series should honestly take more time to explain. Honestly, each of the girls have backstories that were shortly alluded to but really could be quite interesting if they were better explored.

Despite having 12 episodes, I still feel like I know next to nothing about the characters. Really all the show has achieved so far is create 12 episodes packed to brim with frivolous drama. The show has potential, but it needs some more work to prove its more than some harem anime.

Spenser Confidential

This was a decent action film, there were some moments that were funny. But overall the film felt pretty generic like a corny comedy action movie. And the payoff at the end wasn’t nearly as spectacular as I would’ve hoped.

50 First Dates

As far as rom-coms go, this one was alright. Watching Sandler get repeatedly rejected was the best part of the movie.

Chef

Sure the movie was filled with Cliches about a father and a distant son. But the atmosphere of the movie was like a party! Crank the music up, start cooking in the kitchen, and just relax with a cold one. That’s how this movie is meant to be enjoyed.

Fullmetal Alchemist

I'd argue that this show has actually aged quite well. It has the world building and narrative power to hold its own against the other phenomenal series that are out there. However, the simple fact is I could tell where the series diverged from the Manga simply because it felt different and in a way that was not nearly as perfect as the start of the series.

In addition, the graphics are a little choppy and they do show their age, especially when compared to something like Demon Slayer that turns the visuals of an Anime into a beautiful art form. Don't get me wrong, for the time period the animation is quite good, I'm just spoiled by having seen the magical works of art that come from decades more experience.

For primarily these reasons, I think I'm going to move onto Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in the hopes that it takes such an incredible work of narrative art and makes it better to withstand the passing of time. I don't regret watching this series first, but I just know that Brotherhood can be everything this show was and more.

Spice and Wolf

Nice little gem of an Anime. I wouldn’t be lying if I said the music was one of my favorite parts of the series. The music is certainly a highlight of the atmosphere building. The animation quality was top notch at some points and subpar at others, but they still did a great job building a pleasant and interesting world.

Honestly, the witty banter is absolutely my favorite part of the series. When it’s just Holo and Lawrence, the back and forth reminds me so much of my own love for witty charades.

If it feels a little slow at the start, you aren’t wrong. The story really doesn’t pickup until the 4th episode. I really wish there could be a third season to finish tying up the loose ends but alas.

Highlights of the show:
:asterisk_symbol: Cute wolf girl Holo is an incredibly interesting and mischievous character
:asterisk_symbol: I somehow learned a great deal about economics without it feeling painful

So really, it was quite good.

Spice and Wolf: Special 4 Wolf and the Amber Melancholy

Compared to the other OVA from Season 1, this didn't seem nearly as important to the story and honestly felt a little disjointed.

Spice and Wolf: Special 1 Wolf and Tail of Happiness

This episode has confirmed that this series is actually along the lines of a rom-com, I really wasn't sure so far. I wouldn't recommend skipping this even though it is considered a special and doesn't really further the plot.

If I had reviewed this series after just the first season, I would have said its quirky and mediocre. Towards the last couple episodes of Season 1 I had finally had some more enjoyable moments. From there, however, Season 2 only let the series get better and makes me excited for Season 3! This series is simply just fun to watch.

Edit: After watching season 3, it really seals the deal. This is one of the most entertaining and well orchestrated rom-com Animes I've had the pleasure of watching.

Now this was an episode worth seeing the series for. Certainly different from the general tone that the series has had so far, but a worthwhile excursion from it.

The Quintessential Quintuplets

What makes this show interesting: It's as if you had a rom-com where they threw every popular character archetype (Tsundere, Dandere, etc) into one Anime and they were all sisters. More than sisters in fact, they are quintuplets! Throw a single guy at them, and let the comedy ensue.

K-On! The Movie

Filled with Clichés, but a touching goodbye to the entire cast of K-ON! I can't help but enjoy all the music they make in this series because I just love making music so much myself. It's never about how good it sounds, but the love and labor that went into it.

Tenet

This movie aimed to be the next Inception. In terms of powerful visuals, complex narrative and truly mindboggling concepts that require you to think deeply to truly understand. It did not fully accomplish this incredible feat, but it did manage to pull some good punches.

I did find that the film lacked sufficient character development, and quite honestly, the emotional acting didn't seem very strong. While the action scenes could have me at the edge of my seat, any of the character development/emotional building scenes left me feeling underwhelmed.

Ultimately, they had a lot of the aforementioned characteristics but it simply wasn't done smooth enough. Oftentimes the plot felt jagged as you were torn from scene to scene. They handles the the explanation of the mind-bending concept, but they simply couldn't make the entire film feel smooth and connected. Despite understanding the plot and the internal physics quite well, I couldn't help but find myself lost in a way that did not make the film appealing.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

First off, I will say tis show was truly a pleasure to watch. ufotable has a remarkably good track record for really outstanding animation. However, I have one question for you:

If Wisteria wards off demons and can kill them, and this is known by literally every demon slayer (as it is a part of their initiation ritual), then why doesn't literally everyone keep some on their person?

So my point is, yes it's good to watch and I'd recommend it highly, but don't think too carefully about everything as you'll find inconsistencies and unexplained details. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing more of Nezuko in action with Season 2!

Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works: Special 2 Sunny Day

I find it interesting that this qualified as the "good" ending to the story. Keep in mind, it's not really a full episode, just 10-ish minutes. But to be honest Saber just didn't mean nearly as much to me. In this particular route, I saw her more as a temporary figure towards Shiro and that her disappearance was just about guaranteed anyways. She was never quite as developed in this series either. It was still a nice little optional twist to the ending.
