edgarwright UPDATED: On the very night of the BAFTA's, as we near the end of the 2023/2024 awards cycle, you will have already heard about several excellent films that are nominated, or have already won some hardware. But that's never the full story of the cinematic year.

With that in mind, here's 40 or so movies I saw in the last year that I enjoyed, was impressed by, or I think are of note, that were NOT nominated for either a BAFTA or an Oscar.

This is a list of genre films that have received good to great buzz. Some of the movies have had limited releases, some don't even have a release date yet. But all of them should be on your radar.Keep in mind, this is horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and mindbender centric. Buzzed about movies like Foxcatcher, Gone Girl and Nightcrawler are not included. This list would be a mile long if all acclaimed films were included.

Here is a list of recent films playing major film festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and TIFF that have been getting a lot of positive buzz. These lists stick primarily to those of a sci-fi/horror/fantasy/mindbender style, so don't expect to see everything that is cleaning up at Cannes, just the weird ones. With that said, here are new films to keep your eye on.
