Doctor Who: 1x03 Boom

Steven Moffat returns to the show and delivers one of the show’s best-ever episodes. Again.
It’s an ingenious high-concept idea, and there are several nail-biting moments of unbearable tension.
Really loving Ruby and the new Doctor. They are fabulous together. Wish this season had 15 more episodes instead of 5.

Red Eye: 1x05 Episode 5

Nail-biting stuff.
This episode answers most of the big questions. And by the end of it we have a much clearer idea of what’s going on.
It’s also an episode of big reveals/twists, particularly in the final seconds. (We might have seen that one coming but it was still fun to see it play out.)

Criminal Record: 1x08 Carla

Intense final episode.

There are melodramatic plot twists which seem more suited to a less serious-minded show, but the moral ambiguity at the core of the story shines through and leaves us with a few uncomfortable questions.

Criminal Record: 1x03 Kid in the Park

Best episode yet. That sequence with Hegarty watching the killer close in on Lenker, on camera, was nail-biting stuff.
It’s a show where everybody is abrasive. Even the people that actually like one another! But this episode found time for two comedic moments. (And Lenker was in a car with someone for both of them!)
My 100th TV episode of 2024. Averaging 1h49m of TV per day.

Slow Horses: 2x04 Cicada

Quality thriller.
On any other show, the team not working together or sharing information would bug me, but on this show, it makes sense. As does River’s rookie mistake in the closing seconds. Much as we love them, these agents are not the best agents.
Standish telling her backstory to that guy was a series highpoint.

The Venture Bros.: 4x13 Bright Lights, Dean City

Hilarious.
This was one of those exceptional episodes where absolutely everything clicked. Every scene, every character, every line… it was perfect. All the things that are great about the show in one episode.
Having Nathan Fillion join the cast as this universe’s Spider-Man was bliss. As was the Sound of Music reference that he made.

Doctor Who: 1x04 73 Yards

It never ceases to amaze me to easily this show shifts from genre to genre. These last 3 episodes have been nothing alike.
The hook here, lasting most of the episode, was gripping. Could they pay it off? I wondered. Could they make everything make sense? At the end, not every question was answered, but the foreshadowing of where it was all going to go was exceptional.
And the big twist/reveal at the very end was beautiful.

Columbo: 10x14 Columbo Likes the Nightlife

The final Columbo episode is one of the very best. It’s full of great detective work, and Peter Falk comes across as a grizzled and dogged investigator. Sometimes amusing, but never buffoonish. There’s a real edge to his scenes with Matthew Rhys, who is also excellent. The astonishingly sexy Jennifer Sky makes for a sympathetic co-conspirator.
Great score, too. And a visual style that kicks new life into the series.

The Greatest American Hero: 1x01 The Greatest American Hero

Delightful.
A genuinely original premise, and a very funny script.
The three main characters have very distinctly different voices and the casting is perfect.
The a-story concerns a plot to kill the American President but it’s skilfully balanced with the realistic aspects of Ralph’s life as a high school teacher.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law: 3x04 Bird Girl of Guantanamole

Magnificent!
This is the episode that introduces Paget Brewster as Birdgirl. It’s an inspired idea and the execution is perfect.
More than that, the script is choc full of hilarious gags. Wonderful.
This is one that gets an instant rewatch. Watch, rewind, watch again.

The Venture Bros.: 4x09 The Diving Bell vs. The Butterglider

I love this show so much.
The music for the big attack on the Venture Compound is superb. It really makes the whole action sequence exciting. You completely forget that you’re watching a half-hour animated comedy series for a few seconds there.

Doctor Who: Special 4 Christmas Special: The Church on Ruby Road

Magnificent.
First off, Ncuti Gatwa is a great Doctor. He’s flamboyant and fun. There’s a couple of long moments where he’s deep in thought (before eventually speaking) that I absolutely loved. It’s a performance that really pulls you in.
This was a fun adventure. Very different to anything else that I’m watching on TV at the moment. Also very different from previous Who. Yet, having said that, all the core elements of Who were in place. It’s clearly Who. But it’s been completely reinvented. Again.
The fate of the world wasn’t at stake. Or even the universe! It was all just about one baby. And the (implied) power of that baby to change the world. Except for excursions to the villains’ ship, it all took place inside one normal, crowded flat.
But then, Russell T. Davies has always excelled at making the ordinary fantastic. Here, he hangs a lot of the story on bad luck and coincidences. Normal stuff we all experience. So, no matter how bonkers things get we can always relate.
Who is Ruby’s mother? Who is Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson)? And where are they going with the “mavity” thing? So many questions….

Malory Towers: 4x12 The Terrible Day

Gripping.
Two major ongoing storylines come to their climax here. The Ruth-Connie one is dark but completely relatable. It collides with the ongoing problems everyone has been having with June Johns all season long. She’s always been an unlikeable troublemaker, but here we are 100% on her side when she’s accused in the wrong, and most of the class turns against her.
Skilfully done.
Excellent cliffhanger.

Ted Lasso: 3x02 (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea

Lovely.
Lots of focus on Keeley and her new job. Plus on Roy post breakup. There are some interesting developments in the big storylines.
Show is full of emotional moments and it always nails them because it’s so smart.

Tour of Duty: 1x16 Gray-Brown Odyssey

Blinded, Goldman is behind enemy lines with a VC prisoner.
Rosalind Chao and Stephen Caffrey are both superb. The script is smart and honest, and some of the scenes are hard to watch.
With this and the previous episode, the show conclusively proves it’s much more than an action show.

Red Eye: 1x06 Episode 6

We go into this episode knowing who the villain is, and the script has a lot of fun with that as we watch the remaining characters repeatedly place their trust in the wrong person. Great source of tension.
The episode also delivers action. And gives a whole lot of closure. Even for things I did not expect.

Red Eye: 1x04 Episode 4

Best episode so far.
The show doesn’t have an unstoppable action hero like Jack Bauer, but it’s clear that the writers/producers have learned a lot from 24. As the bodies pile up on the airplane, down on the ground the story adds espionage, mistrust in the halls of power and - of course! - a sniper to kill someone who knows too much.
Great fun.

Malory Towers: 4x11 The Exam

Terrific episode. Very different to the usual, with Gwen holding a bomb that might explode at any second!
The hidden room storyline comes to fruition. And there is plenty of humour amid the tension.
A standout episode by any standards.

Night Court: 2x11 Wheelers of Fortune

Brent Spiner.
Is there such a thing as a perfect episode? One instalment that encapsulates all you could ever want from a particular show…
If there is, then this is Night Court’s. It was enthusiastically ridiculous, laugh-out-loud funny, heartfelt, and beautiful. All at the same time.
Also, I want all of these guest characters to return multiple times.

The Other Two: 3x07 Cary Gets His Ass Handed to Him

Simu Liu.
Early episodes had me thinking the show had maybe lost its mojo, but these last two have been fantastic.
All the storylines here were rock solid, very funny, and oddly sad.
Curtis calling Cary out for being a dick to him all season was magnificent.

Tour of Duty: 1x15 Soldiers

Superb!
One of the best and most memorable episodes of the entire series. It take Percell, Taylor and Ruiz out of Vietnam when Percell’s father (Robert Fuller) has a heart attack. They meet a wide variety of characters, each with their own take on the war (and war in general).
It’s bleak, but damn is it powerful.

Girls5eva: 3x06 New York

Terrific season finale wraps everything up. For now. There are callbacks to all sorts of things we saw during the season, as well as a lot of love for Richard Kind (playing himself). There are some great songs. (The main song near the end is lovely.) And, as is usual, the episode was packed with hilarious gags. My favourite? The digs at the TV industry.

Hunter: 5x15 Informant

My favourite Hunter stories are the elaborate ones where you genuinely don’t know what is going to happen next.
Tom Chehak’s script delivers this and a trio of shady characters connected by a 7-year-old murder-robbery case. But who did it?
The screentime is divided equally between Hunter, McCall and Charlie in this one.

The Other Two: 3x06 Brooke, and We Are Not Joking, Goes to Space

Smart and very sharp.
Best episode of the season, so far. Its targets were well and truly skewered, it was very funny, and it is written/played so you cannot help but feel compassion for the characters. Even increasingly-delusional Cary.
Really loving Brandon Scott Jones as Curtis this season. Curtis is the other Lance. And I only just realised it.

Columbo: 10x12 Ashes to Ashes

Perfect!
Patrick McGoohan leads an all-star cast in one of the best episodes. He directs, and Peter Falk gives one of his most enjoyable performances. It’s full of clever clues and smart detective work as Columbo doggedly follows the trail to the murderer.
Many highlights, including the two men shouting across an empty room, their on-screen chemistry, the songs and tap-dancer, and the last scene.

Girls5eva: 3x05 Cleveland

Easily the best Girls5eva episode and one of the best sitcom episodes I’ve ever seen. The quantity of gags is truly insane. And the quality is very high. (Summer’s vocal exercise is a Hall of Fame joke.) Ever better, the episode told a great story with a great ending.

Quantum Leap: 2x13 Against Time

The final episode of New QL is the best episode of New QL.
A clever, emotional, and satisfying script that really doubles down on the ideals that make the show (both original and sequel) so special.
Raymond Lee’s best performance.
Great to see Georgina Reilly back as Janis.
I hope the show continues on another network.

Press Gang: 2x10 The Rest of My Life

Exceptional episode about the aftermath of a disaster. I found it difficult to watch because, not long ago, we had an identical situation in my county.
The way the story was told and Dexter Fletcher’s performance (with Spike trapped in the rubble) were both stellar.
Haunting use of the phrase “the rest of my life.” Twice!

This show is perfect.

Wow. What a great episode.
Lots of laughs, but it’s a serious story with Rosa mostly off-camera and in danger. The gang worries about her and copes badly with their worrying.
