Ambitious…. But messy.
There is some good stuff here but also some things that just didn’t work. At times the action looked phenomenal, at other times I couldn’t follow what was happening with the shakey cam and the way some of it was cut. I liked the story and exploring the past. The training break between 2nd and 3rd act was the weakest part of the movie. Also felt little unsatisfying with the way it wraps. I think Dev showed some good traits though and will definitely check out whatever he does next. Shout out to Shantel Copley, he’s great as always!
Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal both give great performances. Their script shows problems with today's society. At the same time, while focusing on serious issues, it can also be really funny and heartfelt. The cinematography is fantastic. There are a lot of cool shots in here and it really portrays Oakland as a city full of people and not just some place. The ending is a little heavy handed but nothing that ruins the movie. Go see this, it's one of the best movies of the year.
The animation style is a lost treasure. But the subject matter is troubling. Deeply misogynistic, full of rape fantasy. But other than that, wheeee!
I don't really care what anyone else says... I liked it a lot! The acting was great, and I really enjoyed the story. It giggled several times, I warmed to the two young leads right away, and I was thoroughly creeped out. Nice that the usual trope of older sister/younger brother basically hating each other wasn't there. Their relationship was very sweet and believable. So don't listen to the naysayers... Watch it, and make up your own mind.
