I truly dislike jump scares, not because they scare the shit out of me (they do!), but because they're a cop-out, a lazy option overused in today's horror. But - holy shit! - that scene with the sisters arguing with each other in the car... THAT'S how you do a jump scare! Also, nice way to stop a fight. Then, Theo's monologue right after was emotionally intense, I could feel her despair creeping inside me. This show can be slow and boring, at times, but the acting is consistently well above average.
Some interesting pieces coming together. No tree house... Mrs Dudley asking what room the game room was. So many little details we took for granted coz the kids experiences were actually unreliable narration by the sounds of things.
Another strong monologue too, this time from Theo. This show is superb.
“I would. Wouldn’t you?” - This was brutal, crazy, insane, amazing! That was TELEVISION. So carefully and intelligently constructed. This episode is a masterclass in everything - writing, directing, and acting.
Laughing at Jimmy’s plane 'proposal.' So perfect and I liked him realizing Kayla’s value!
Deborah moving her parents to Vegas. Unhinged behavior! That is so her.
I cannot wait to see what's in store for us in season 4 as we experience another power shift between Ava and Deborah.
I thought it was heading to a predictable path (they fight in the season finale, they make up the next season...) . I did not expect that chess move. Looking forward s04 shaking things up.
awesome show,
binge watched it this weekend, which is very rare.
Every actor did their job perfectly,
The technical department did a great job.
I liked it a lot.
i have whiplash i went from horrified and on the verge of cardiac arrest to utterly heartbroken within 60 seconds
Holy shit. I underestimated Ava as well there. Absolute power move and will really turn their dynamic on its head.
Props to Jimmy for walking away from that meeting.
Carmen y Lola is a simple story told extremely well.
From a cultural standpoint: While my lesbian friends will no doubt find this tale of two Romani* teenagers (a high femme and a lipstick lesbian, no less) in the suburbs of Madrid a tad cloying while the skinny young women parade about in their short shorts and tight T-shirts, I, as an over-sensitive gay man, found the girls' relationship completely and totally endearing.
From a filmmaking standpoint: Carmen & Lola takes absolutely zero risks as concerns the story and the style, yet the purity of the film shines through thanks, in large part, to the acting. The lead actresses (Rosy Rodriguez as Carmen, the cishet beauty engaged to Lola's cousin, and Zaira Morales as the innocent yet self-aware lesbian Lola) are on point, but the supporting cast are phenomenal, especially when considering all but one are non-professional Romani.
The bottom line: As the film began to reach its conclusion, I caught myself hoping for a happy ending harder than I have for almost any film to date, which means that the 'sexual correctness' and the 'grand filmmaking' questions meant little to me when compared to how emotionally involved I became in the movie. And that makes the film a good one, in my book.
*Many English readers will know this population as 'gypsy', though I use the term 'Romani' here as many consider 'gypsy' to be pejorative. Note that, in the film the population refer to themselves as 'gitana' and 'gitano', which are the Spanish translations of 'gypsy'.
Also note, if you enjoyed Carmen y Lola you really need to see Rafiki, a Kenyan film much in the same vein.
Judging from the other reviews, it goes to show how easy it is to miss an eating disorder... That's the true horror story of the film.
The clues were everywhere:
- her gazing at the cake shop,
- her half-eaten salad at her lunch break,
- her childhood photo from the "Pork Queen Fair" when she was overweight,
- Ganush's granddaughter remarking that she used to be fat,
- the multiple times that Ganush rips out her hair and vomits into her mouth,
- the sounds of buzzing flies/creaking doors/etc. everytime she felt her stomach growling,
- her disgust with the cake she made,
- her binging on the ice cream and the obvious lie she told her boyfriend about her being lactose intolerant,
- her drinking only coffee at the diner, before succumbing to binging on an ice cream again,
- her resisting the temptation of the "free cookie" and rewarding herself by buying a new coat.
The fact that her boyfriend wasn't the one who died but (in reality) her getting run over by the train, shows that it was all in her head as she was becoming more and more psychotic, either because of undernutrition or because of an underlying form of schizophrenia.
This is now my go-to lesbian Christmas movie(not that there are that many to choose from but still).
It was really cute, the acting was fine and I've always been a sucker for the fake dating trope
This was quite an experience. There aren't many occasions when a film keeps me off-balance like this one did. I was never really sure where the story was going. The two lead characters are overwhelmingly creepy, or more accurately, gross. Sean Harris is especially amazing as a dysfunctional man (Philip) who was once a puppeteer who entertained children. Umm...hopefully not with the spider puppet he carries around all the time. Parents...avoid puppet shows!
This film has a practically apocalyptical look, with everything appearing dirty, dilapidated and broken. There are times when the spider puppet haunts Philip that are as frightening as anything I can remember watching over the last few years. The only negatives were a few jump scares that were totally unnecessary, especially as Possum scares most when at its deliberate pace.
This will be a tough watch for most movie goers as there's no one to cheer for and there's not a laugh in site. This is a dark, dank psychological Horror film focused on the fallout and destruction of lives due to child abuse. It's ugly and almost otherworldly, but I couldn't look away.
how on earth do they keep topping the previous season? this is the best show on tv right now!
and for the people online who write about how hannah is a "nepo baby who can't act," she came for y'all in this episode!!! (and this season in general) whew!!!!
A weird movie on its premise but i liked it , it has a charm to it
Evan Rachel Wood's performance is heartwarming
i found it really confusing in some parts but the main characters carried the movie with ease. the connection they shared in such a short period of time, linked by both passion and the struggle of womanhood, the resistance of jin xia until fully giving in to the other woman's advances, the vulnerability, the tenderness they had with each other... just wow. i loved it, even though almost everything outside the two of them wasn't very well made. the visuals are great too, i loved what they did with the lighting
