I don't think I could roll my eyes hard enough at all of the Canada jokes. What lazy writing.

How to Get Away with Murder: 4x02 I'm Not Her

I was wondering where the murder part of the show was. The show continues to be very strong and maintain the intrigue and character development. Looking further into Annalise's psyche with her therapy is already revealing a lot more about her. Strong performance from all of the cast in this episode and as always I'm in suspense for the next episode.

(Also Frank's beard is back)

How to Get Away with Murder: 4x01 I'm Going Away

There's a distinct lack of murders in this premiere which is a nice change from the usual format of the show. A solid start to the latest season, I'm definitely curious how they'll carry the show forward.

Star Trek: Discovery: 1x01 The Vulcan Hello

A good intro to the latest iteration of the Star Trek franchise. The title sequence was spectacular. I like the characters that have been introduced thus far. Michael is intriguing and clearly has some past trauma that will be explored. I loved the dynamic between her and the captain. And Saru was spectacular - Doug Jones has impressed me in this role already.
I'm looking forward to where the show goes from here.

The Great British Bake Off: 1x01 Cake Week

It's weird to watch a show that is essentially the same, but feels so different.

Those challenges were tough for the first week! I'm really impressed, but can definitely feel the change in judging without Mary Berry. She balanced nicely with Paul's more intimidating and critical judging by always making a negative into a positive (calling things "rustic", always having a kind smile), while Prue seems to be more like Paul in having high expectations and a critical eye. The change isn't bad necessarily, but is certainly different.
I was very sad to see Mel and Sue leave, but am very excited about Noel and Sandi. They work very well together and with the contestants and make the show just as light and fun.

Bake Off is not the exact same as before, and I wouldn't expect it to be. But it still brings the same joy to watch as before.

I was waiting for all of that sexual tension to pay off and the anticipation leading up to it was perfect. Love the subtitles of this show and its characters.

Despite a lackluster fifth season, I am very impressed with how this season has panned out.
I was hesitant at the beginning with Selina no longer as Veep or President, but they really managed to make it work and feel like an extension of the same show. On that note, I am very excited for the gang to be back together in season 7 for another presidential campaign.
My one gripe/blessing is the Dan/Amy bombshell. It was maybe a little too out of left field with no real indication or hint it could be coming (which made for great shock value, but not great storytelling), but I'll take what I can get with those two.

The Newsroom

This is one of the most consistently impressive shows I've had the privilege and absolute joy to watch. It carries a similar tone and feel as The West Wing, also written and created by Aaron Sorkin, which makes it no surprise why I loved this show so much. The writing is spectacular and the acting is phenomenal. This is one of those rare shows where every character grows and develops and has a moment to shine. I'm sad that the show only lasted 3 seasons, but those 25 episodes are pure gold.

The Handmaid's Tale: 1x07 The Other Side

At first this felt like a bit of filler to flesh out the backstory and the "Before" part of the events, but it was so much more. It shifted gears a little bit from the rest of the main plot, but in a way that helped contextualize the rest of what's happening. And broadened the scope of the story outside of just what June/Offred has been experiencing. I am so impressed with O.T. Fagbenle in this episode, his performance was quite exceptional and it really allowed me to understand Luke so much more, especially his relationship with June.

I'm surprised I liked this episode so much, but it really stood out and made the reveal at the end so worth it.

Master of None: Season 2

This season is significantly better than the first. It completely breaks the stylistic mold and is so different and distinct from any other show. Almost every episode uses such creative stylistic choices ("The Thief", "New York, I Love You", and "Thanksgiving" are the three that stand out to me) that make it much more cinematic than most formulaic TV shows. Aziz Ansari really made this show into something quite spectacular.

The West Wing: 1x07 The State Dinner

The ending of this episode always gets me. It's so simple, yet so emotional and powerful, and of course Martin Sheen is terrific as always.

Riverdale: 1x12 Chapter Twelve: Anatomy of a Murder

Could they have revealed the the major mystery of the show in any more of an underwhelming way? The entirety of the last 5 minutes was Jughead explaining what happened. This show likes to do a lot of telling and little showing.

House of Cards: 1x08 Chapter 8

I'm somewhat disappointed that this episode has such a low rating. While I understand it was somewhat stand-alone and didn't move the plot forward very much, I think it provided a lot of great character moments. I really enjoyed this one, it was a bit of a departure, but an excellent one at that.

Mozart in the Jungle: 3x07 Not Yet Titled

I'm generally a fan of when shows have documentary style episodes, but this one really took me by surprise. At first it seemed like a simple comedic break with Jason Schwartzman reprising his role as Bradford Sharp directing his first film, but it quickly took a really interesting and moving approach with the performance in an actual prison setting. The talking-head interviews with the actual inmates' responses to the orchestra's performance really blurred the line between fiction and reality, and despite not getting a lot of plot or character in this episode, I was really engaged with and impressed by this episode.
In a somewhat lackluster season, this is a standout episode.

Pitch: 1x09 Scratched

The number one thing I was worried about at the start of the season was the potential for romance between Mike and Ginny. I thought I was safe once it seemed they'd established their relationship as a close mentor/pupil relationship. I feel like it's so much more meaningful without the romance aspect, especially since she was a fan of him before joining the Padres. Unfortunately, my fears appear to be coming true.

Angel: 1x09 Hero

This is a very clear and in no way subtle WWII/Holocaust allegory (the uniforms, "extermination" and "vermin", the shoes that Doyle finds in his flashback, bunker under the floorboards, etc.). But still very effective, with a heartbreaking ending.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: 12x01 The Gang Turns Black

This was a brilliant start to the season! The show just keeps getting better and better - in writing, performance, cinematography, everything. Not only were the jokes on point, but the social commentary was great. I love when shows do musical episodes, so this made me extremely happy. The Quantum Leap references and Scott Bacula cameo added a whole other level of enjoyment. For such a weird premise, the episode was put together in such a neat, though-provoking, hilarious package. The ending was absolutely perfect and tied everything together.
This is my new favourite episode of Always Sunny.

The Crown

I was really impressed with Matt Smith in this role. The entire cast was remarkable, but his performance was especially noteworthy. John Lithgow as Winston Churchill seemed strange at first, but really worked and was just as impressive. Claire Foy was lovely to watch and really came to inhabit the role of Elizabeth II.
I'm excited to see how the rest of series plays out, especially if its projected to have 60 episodes depicting Elizabeth's life all the way up to the present day.
