Fuck... this is going to get a lot worse isn't it?
Sadly this show was quite the disappointment. While it started out generic at best they decided to open up the scale of this and thereby turning this in a boring slog with a bland roster of characters. Can't say I was a big fan of the individual powers either since they all felt very samey (and MC-kun obviously getting the most OP one of the bunch) but what really put the nail in the coffin for me was the visuals/direction. Being a joint production between three mainly assistance focused studios it held up for the first couple of episodes but got quite jarring after the midpoint. 3D and 2D animation get mixed quite noticeable, stylization went missing, models turn very basic and there are constant swirling zoomins and tracking shots to distract from the lack of animation.
Filming underwater with a limited budget is obviously not easy so I can sort of understand that the elevator pitch of "it's a haunted house BUT it plays at the bottom of a lake" didn't really result in a great movie but I didn't expect them to also fail so miserably at the writing portion. The dialogue felt stiff like it was dubbed into English having me not invested in the couple at all and the they didn't really know what to do with their runtime after the initial exploration of the place and even forcing exposition for the "climax".
I did like how the set looked submerged though but I can't say that it felt very claustrophobic since the camera still made things look oddly sterile. Maybe they should have just stuck to the POV/drone cam so they could do things besides the jumpscares (the rotating shots do however not boost my confidence in that)?

More or less passable but doesn't really innovate on conventions besides mixing various elements. I'm also a bit iffy on how some of these things worked. The scene were Beto comes to the house was offensively stupid though.
Not gonna lie... I didn't want to watch the show merely on the expectation of getting another 90s slasher turned into a mystery series/teenage drama but I still clicked the trailer and then I saw it: :clown: :clown::clown: - yes! A clown emoji convinced me to give this one a go regardless (on which was delivered on multiple times). While it sort of was what I expected with plenty of flaws it was ultimately kinda "watchable". Still wouldn't recommend it however as there are entire episodes were pretty much nothing happens and the ending was very unsatisfying --> it was all quite unearned with more dumb stuff piling ontop of the characters all behaving different from how they were portrayed before.
While Kate starts out OK and Winstead is a good lead it just dulls out with a paper thin and predictable plot seen in countless other action movies before. To not fall into the mould they attempt to style things up by being quirky and pimping out the Japanese setting but it's just way too tryhard for it's own good. As soon as she put on the glasses for the final showdown I was pretty much done with it. I don't really care for slow-mo action scenes when they're silly and unimpressive thanks to her being a Mary Sue let alone the lame confrontation with the antagonist.

And now they're recycling segments from previous seasons (the VR native kid)? I guess I'll check back next season to see if they got something more interesting to offer once again otherwise I'm pretty much done with this show.
Looks like they didn't commit and will just drag things out with Jake. Having the end play out during another house party is just plain lazy writing, especially with the headphones and everyone having their eyes closed the entire time. What even was the point? It's not like Lexy's little sister wasn't awake the last time they threw one and she apparently is carefree enough to even smoke weed inside the house - like her parents wouldn't notice...
I'm also constantly weirded out by Devon. Just doesn't feel like a real kid and he somehow always ends up at the cool kids table despite not showing any aspirations of that.
Anyways, not interested in spending another 7 hours with these kids.
As good as the gore was... the script was just horrid. Everyone kept reciting the same lines, the characters were one-note and everything about the townspeople was just absurd. Why is everyone up in arms about something that doesn't really concern them from 40 years ago? How they dealt with Michael was also dumb... it's like Judy Geer's character wasn't listening to her mom at all. The 2018 effort was OKish as it dealt with Laurie's trauma but this really had nothing to show for it.
I guess this is what happens when you're already renewed for three additional seasons... This really was just a random mess throwing out historical references but not really tying anything together in a way that would make sense.
What was the point in keeping any humans around to breed when they apparently just needed the one perfect body to do so? Why did they keep Troy alive but not Jamie??
I really don't know about this... The middle school drama is a big turn-off for me, especially since none of the characters seem believable. Grief is apparently not something this show has time for and weird scene flow is also not helping (7 minutes in heaven but it plays out like they've only been in for a minute / Chucky going from playing with the little girl and not knowing where Lexy is to being right under her bed with a knife (which he didn't bring and the kids at the party are certainly aware of his presence) / Jake going back into the mansion to "show Lexy" only to find her with her sister ready to go when she had just placed herself in the center of attention seconds ago (also what is up with the trench coat - she was wearing an overall so it's not like she used that to conceal her costume??))... Really the only thing making this passable is Chucky himself but he isn't his usual "killer doll" here and they're really forcing his dynamic with Jake (which potentially leads to him getting in the backseat even). I guess the next episode will be telling of the direction of the show.

Honestly the best thing they probably did with this is having two different cuts...
None of the rooms in the sequel felt particularly exciting with the beach one being especially terrible and the solutions were not very rewarding either (constantly running after single clues as a group or solving things randomly).
I saw people mentioning a better ensemble cast but honestly it was all very stiff and Zoey became ultimately annoying with her Mary Sue stick.
The backstory also didn't really make sense to me alongside a lot of contrived elements in the movie... I hope the next part puts more effort into the rooms/puzzles again.
Also did I miss something? Like... just... go under the taxi girls? Or how about you enter the code to get out of your own game? And if you forgot - the solution is still on the glass you know? :rolling_eyes:

Can't say I really liked any sketch whole so far... There is also a heavy emphasis on political topics but instead of packing their messaging into the gags their "humor" mostly boils down to sarcastically spelling out their exact stance on it - especially tiresome if that happens multiple times each short episode.
Not sure if I would have liked it more or less if I didn't know who was attached to this. A tech-possession movie sounded really cool but the "mind-space" idea was underused and felt detached which can be said about a lot of stuff in the movie. It has little time for genuine interactions between characters and instead prefers to fill the dialogue with info dumps "let me show you what I have in the garage" :face_with_raised_eyebrow:), tension and horror are pretty much absent (they had every excuse to blend realities here) and the final third just poked holes in any of the remaining logic the lore (and story) might have had...
As others have pointed out, this one has to be commended for the presentation as well as some fantastic tunes. When it comes to the story however it doesn't really go very deep as the world building is lacking and Matsumoto is kinda annoying and the secret "hero" here. Still, some of the episodic entries were quite good so I'll give it to them.
The whiplash is u n r e a l. After cranking the drama and politics up to 9000% for the premiere this just plain ignores all of it and plays le separation funneh (and conveniently puts Diaz on drugs for the whole affair). Not at all interested in finishing the show anymore.
Quite the prude censors at work for the simulcast huh? Takes you right out of it if you have to guess what "shocking" thing is actually hidden behind the magic white fog... Odd standards considering that the girl is fighting an ugly bastard in the same episode. (this was NOT done for the JP broadcast!)
Feels otherwise like generic death game fare - moreso surprised that it's still holding up given the multiple studios involved and inexperienced main directors (certainly less bold with the onscreen text this time around).
Yeah what the heck. Besides the title this has little in common with the "Wrong Turn" movies. While some individual scenes themselves play out OK others turned out really dumb... essential "character building" is left to the imagination (it's a horror movie, I know) and ultimately the dreamt up scenario makes very little sense. I never watched all of the sequels but I'd imagine that even if they're objectively bad they probably turn out to be more fun than this given that they don't want to be taken as serious.
Quite the boring watch that fails to be anything but generic for the most part. While the last third feels more like Barett's usual style it doesn't really match the tone of the movie and is far detached from reality.

I only now noticed that they're saying themselves this was inspired by the "Blue Whale Challenge" but honestly that makes it almost insulting as the short lacked any credibility or depth for that matter. Her circumstances were entirely different to whatever transpired for those kids and far from credible. (My expectations in this anthology were clearly off :neutral_face:.)
Despite the attempt at a curveball this is sadly wholly predictable and still pads the runtime for no reason... I wish they left the train clearly hitting them out to at least preserve some ambiguity. The phone recording angle was also quite gimmicky and more so annoyed me in how she framed her recordings.

Dropping this as I can't see myself lasting through a 2 cour of this. According to some previews this was supposed to be great but the back-loaded magic academy stuff is uninteresting and the spider segments while having at least some personality are just the same thing every episode.
Shockingly low effort adaptation... The manga panels are serving 1:1 as the screenplay with little animation on screen and lots of poorly drawn models and details. Might as well not have adapted this.
Another uneven season with mostly duds. and sadly this wanna be horror snoozefest full of plotholes joins that pile...
