they canceled this fantastic show, meanwhile they keep producing shitty teen drama's. what a shame
I wished this was better. It wasn't. First elephant in the room, make up/prosthetics on Sofia were terrible. She was never going to look like Griselda. Why this weird botched middle ground? I don't know how that got approved. Story pacing was so so. It felt as if we were stop and start racing through plot points. Spending too much time on unimportant or uninteresting segments only to breeze by more intriguing moments. I wish we would have gotten a bit more time with Griselda on top of the world before the inevitable collapse and her murder. I liked where and how it ended, but it missed on a lot of the bigger story points. Writing was ok. I did enjoy the fashion, music, and hair. Really fun exposure to the culture of Latinos and Miami in this moment of time. I though Sofia did well, but not spectacularly. Her inspirational/rousing speeches fell flat or just felt like her screaming her dialogue instead of actually inspiring. She did well playing off her male leads though. Overall, if you like Sofia you'll like this. If you don't, move on past this series.
I will subscribe to Hulu just to watch this when new seasons are offered. Really well done. Heartily recommended.
I have seen short videos of her on tiktok but I really didn't think she had this cult following. I saw the first episode and that bit where she's asked who she looks up to, the way she responded... I don't think she has a right to teach others anything. She's clearly a narcissist and thinks of herself as some form of deity or superior being. That part, I couldn't care less about, but she's dangerous and shouldn't be allowed around suicidal people.
One episode is enough, won't be watching more. If you're just wondering about her, you'll get enough from one episode.
Good show. It had an interesting concept, one I've never seen anything similar to. The comedy was pretty decent but nothing I'd consider really, really funny. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. I'd still say you should at least give the show a shot. For most of you, you'll probably consider it absolutely horrible or not your cup of tea, which is completely fine. That's what I think.
Edit, upon watching and finishing the second season: The first season was a nice introduction to the show, but the second season is where it's at. There was more of a budget, though, to be fair, would a show like this need a bigger budget to be better? I don't think that's specifically the case, but the bigger budget did play a part in the greater overall enjoyment in comparison to the first season. It felt like there was more of a story, which contributed to the level of enjoyment as well. I don't know, it just felt better. I'm not very good at writing something out in regards to a show in some cases, and this is one of them, so that's all that comes to mind, so to speak, and came of letting my fingers do their thing rather than thinking of what to write, word by word.
I really enjoyed season one. The idea that God was going to destroy the Earth and that these people that worked for God were trying to save it was interesting. The ways that they went about trying to create the event that would save the Earth was entertaining.
season 2 is confusing. after successfully saving the Earth from destruction they are suddenly all in the dark ages. But they're not the heavenly deities that they were in season 1. they just seem to be people that are living in the dark ages.
why wouldn't they have done something to the effect of after saving the Earth God says he wants to have more of a fresh start. then bring everyone back to the dark ages. to try and create a better future. But instead of doing it from heaven where they look at monitors and try to direct people. God tells them that they need to be directing the people they're trying to save face to face.
this could have made for more of a season 1 similar situation.
Louis CK & Pamela Adlon.. What can go wrong? Pamela's time to shine!
Sofia Vergara is great but it felt a bit too glamorous and over the top.
Oh no. Netflix has done it yet again and made me root for and feel somewhat sorry for a criminal, bravo guys. Prior to a few days ago, I had never heard the name Griselda Blanco. That was until I saw that a new Narcos-like show had started on Netflix that, surely enough, had some of the same writers behind the lauded Narcos (2015). It shows too because in its opening minutes, it feels like competently made TV. It's difficult to explain but after a while, you can kinda tell if a show is going to be decent or not by the way it feels. The way it's shot and the atmosphere is something that you can differentiate from a show that has a paper mache budget from one that doesn't, and Griselda certainly has that HBO-like blockbuster feel that you can see in its set designs, clothes, acting and overall composition.
Speaking of acting, a lot of it is good, but the star of the show is Griselda and watching Sofia Vergara (who like Morgan Freeman and others doesn't seem to age at all) struggle to her rise to power and slowly lose it all left me conflicted to say the least. The power to change your life doesn't often come easy, especially in her case. The fear, blood, looking over your shoulder always and betrayal that comes with her life is something I struggle to understand if it's worth it in the end. Her come up made me sympathize with what people from other parts of the world go through to just live, let alone survive, and how some of those same people look to a country with plenty of problems as their way out.
I might have to finally check out Narcos because if I was this impressed with Griselda, I can't imagine what's in store for me there.
This started off well enough, but it ended on a sour note. It's never a good sign, when the final episode of a mini-series is roughly 10 minutes shorter than each of the other episodes. It gives a feeling of watching the leftovers. One thing that I didn't really understand was the jumbled timeline. Griselda Blanco's life story was interesting enough w/out them having to change so many details, and keep in actual events but in an alternate order. It didn't make much sense, and it certainly didn't add anything to the story. If anything, the story that they concocted was more of a rendition of Scarface than anything else. I wish that I knew why they had done this, especially when there were plenty of action involved in her real-life story. I will say that one thing I didn't care for about this series was how they made her a sympathetic figure. She wasn't, and to make her and her family victims was disingenuous and dishonest. Other than that, it was well-acted, but it just didn't flow well.
Not being American the number of episodes, and 'missing' parts don't bother me. We're well used to short runs that don't drag out everything and don't have to have everything on the nose.
For this; the reality is replace Trump with Linburgh and there's your show. It would be interesting to see how this would have been received if it were produced before he started campaigning.
Not really spectacular but nice to binge watch
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wake me up when it gets interesting
bring this show back and stop cancelling great shows!
Definitely a binge worthy show. Everyone’s secrets were relatable. Some more outlandish than others but for the most part the guest were every day people struggling with trauma. It was tough watching the healing process for them all. The ending was not expected. I thought there’d be some big twist but there wasn’t and it was perfect the way it was.
an excellent show with a superb cast. Nicole Kidman is brilliant.
[Amazon] One of the most addictive series of the year, a journey through the traumas of a society that builds dead-end roads, suffocated by its own neurotic character. The need to overcome these traumas through hallucinogenic substances also shows the distortion of reality, the superficiality of characters who need to escape from their own world in order to find themselves.
This was a great disappointment. I understand that to condense an expansive life into a 4 part TV series requires selective content and a seminole focus but to define Catherine the Great's life by a fabricated love story was just too hard for me to stomach. I'm a huge Helen Mirrren fan but there was just no motivation for her character nor chemistry with her co-star Jason Clarke. What a waste of talent. What a deconstruction of history. What a disappointment. I give the series a 5 (meh) out of 10. [Historical? Drama]
Catherine was only 33 when she was crowned...
[HBO] Hstory reduced to bedroom tales. Helen Mirren the Great.
As entertaining as this was, I do feel like I want more. The story feels incredibly condensed, glossing over major areas of Catherine's reign. Personally, I would have liked to have the series span over multiple seasons, similar to how The Tudors ran, that way more time can be spent building and executing the story of Catherine (I also would've liked to have seen the coup d'état that put Catherine on the throne in the first place).
This is basically like if you've never read Harry Potter before and you decide to start from Goblet of Fire onwards, skimming through the chapters that you're reading.
The actors were fantastic though, especially Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, which isn't that surprising.
Catherine had Paul when she was 24 (I think), which means, she would have been around 44 for his 20th birthday. As great as Helen Mirren is as an actress, why on Earth did they cast a 70 year-old lady to play a 40 year-old (and knowing Catherine died in her sixties)? I don't know if Paul had any living grandparents by the time he reached 20, but Helen would have been more believable and better casted as his grandmother than as Catherine. Also, Jason Clarke as a heartthrob? I'm sorry, but I don't see it. There are plenty of older, handsome british men. I just don't think he is one of them.
I feel like they messed up the whole thing by doing bad casting choices. A pity.
Really good series. I wish it had a bit more historical relevance with the dark humor and drama. Either way, it was a joy to watch. Hope there is a Season 2!
An utterly delightful and absurd romp through "an occasionally true" story of Catherine The Great's rise to power. A powerhouse cast, great visual design and acerbic comedic writing all pull together for an entertaining ride that's short enough to not be tiresome.
It is insane this show is not more popular. This was a FUCKING TREAT to watch. Holy shit, what a great job everyone did on this.
Edit: They've kept the quality up for all 3 seasons. This is such a fun show to watch, and I bet they've had fun doing all the crazy stuff in it. Hopefully they do more, but I'd also kinda want them not to milk it too much.
The Great is not just great. The Great is marvellous.
The chemistry between the two leads are amazing. Keeps you on your toes the whole time and generally has a great comedic vibe. S2 was slower bet never bad, the ending was unexpected. Can’t wait for s3!!
20 episodes later and i still can't believe how great linda and christina are together. all of their scenes are chef's kiss
