All Quiet on the Western Front

The third adaptation of the book Im Westen nichts Neues arrives in a genre whose blockbusters are few and far between, and where a previous adaptation and a British counterpart (1917) have already set the bar very high. Nevertheless, Edward Berger's old-new classic manages to ponder on the futility of war in a truly timeless manner as it throws you into the middle of a WWI trench to experience humanity firsthand. The acting, photography, and sound design are excellent and delicately pieced together to create one of the most realistically toned and haunting experiences I have seen in recent years.

Dune

A high-scifi piece of art, DUNE is Denis Villeneuve's grand entry into Frank Herbert's spectacular realm. Tightly following Herbert's vision, the film's world is crafted with ambition and scope we haven't seen since the Lord of the Rings. The pacing, photography and mesmerizing music all add up to create one of the most detailed, overarching ambiances I've seen in a movie. The coherence is just insane.

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage

The outcome of rose-tinted glasses meeting poor organization and basic human instinct: chaos at its purest. While Woodstock '69 definitely had its quirks, and was a miracle it wasn't ended with disaster, the '99 festival managed to raise the bar even further to become one of the most underorganized festivals on the planet—a legacy that only Fyre Festival managed to rekindle 18 years later.

I Care a Lot

A promising premise gone rotten, that even stellar performance can't save.

Archive

This sci-fi flick balances all facets perfectly while getting you emotionally invested to an unexpected degree. It delves deep into philosophical themes of existence, morals and love, without giving an ultimate resolve.

Parasite

Loveable and especially relatable characters woven into a story that never lose focus. It's sharp, intelligent, full of twists and backed by perfect acting. Its take on South Korean slums invites us on a journey that might look distant at first, but which feels closer and more authentic than most Hollywood pieces.

Chernobyl

Except for the few dramaturgical scenes, this mini-series captures the zeitgeist incredibly precisely while staying informative even for people familiar with the story. Great photography and a haunting soundtrack elevates it then even further to the top of the genre.

Divergent

While I understand while many would find this movie lacking, I still enjoyed it pretty much. I keep feeling it has a City of Ember vibe. The general concept is promising, but a tad lackluster; the story on the other hand is pretty twisty and dynamic. Characters are diverse, and acting is also fine. Shailene Woodley was and incredibly good pick for the main role, and the chemistry is there between Tris and Four. The soundtrack is solid most of the time, except that one pop track that felt out of place. In general, it's a very lighthearted and entertaining adventure.

The Greatest Showman

I love musicals in general, and this was definitely one of the bests I've ever seen. Absolutely fascinating movie with incredible songs, a powerful story and great acting. It's meant for the big screen. This movie is magic.

Coherence

Coherence is my favorite movie by a huge margin. The story, the script, the tension, the pacing—everything is just perfect. The lack of music amplifies the what's-going-on feeling. Perfect ending.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror's success isn't rooted in its flawless cinematography or perfect acting, but in how relatable and honest it is. It's never about the happy ending, but the story. And it nails it every damn time.

This awesome episode is the first with an optimistic ending, while it still manages to stay down to earth.

Black Mirror: Special 1 White Christmas

A perfectly composed episode with three storylines and a fourth to connect them together. Love how twisty the whole thing is.
