I so enjoy a good vengeance movie, and I loved almost everything Dev Patel did in this one. His passion and creativity are impressive and admirable, and I hope he is so proud of this vision brought to life! It always excites me to see just one fresh or unique element I have not seen in a movie before, but Monkey Man had nearly a dozen moments like this! I had my cringe face on for much of it bc OUCH! It was wonderfully brutal! My only complaint is a very small one, and an honest question: Why did his character in the movie make a point to bleach his mask before looking for his final fight...and then just...take it off right as it started..? I wonder if some scenes with the mask were cut bc the idea just seemed a bit randomly abandoned. I hope a later rewatch will bring me better understanding! Also, if you are someone who needs subtitles due to hearing loss or processing delays, you may want to look for subtitled screenings OR watch via streaming if/when the option is available to you. I missed some details due to my own difficulties (some accents can be a challenge), but it was still more clear to me than the average Christopher Nolan film (not to compare the content at all). Overall, I had so much fun watching, and I will be thrilled to see more from Dev Patel in the future, no matter the genre!
I would give it an 8.5/10 (and I'd round down to 8 for most rating systems). The movie didn't begin as I expected? but I honestly just liked it more and more as it went on. A story 100% worth telling and watching, in my opinion. Would have liked to see more of Sterling K. Brown bc I love him (impossible to get enough haha), but everyone did a great job. I cried once or twice. I def hope to see more from the director! And I wish I had more time to read bc I am also very curious abt the book that inspired it all!
This one was surprisingly cringeworthy. The direction felt so inconsistent. There were dozens of creative choices that just completely missed the mark. It confounded me. However, the writing left much to be desired as well. The casting for some of the characters seemed completely wrong, and sometimes the acting was over-the-top, but I enjoyed a few of the performances (especially Lily James). Please do not get me started on that portrayal of Ric Flair.:see_no_evil: And one scene toward the end had us in tears from holding back laughter; it was supposed to be a somber moment, but it was just so absurd. I believe there is a story very much worth telling here, but in my opinion, this film did not do it justice. (Why on earth would they choose to exclude the sixth brother from their representation of the family? Seriously, why even make that movie?) I'll be seeking documentaries that will hopefully offer a fuller, more accurate story!
Everything about this series was so delightful, cozy, and fun, even during its rare moments of tension. I'm left longing for so much more of this charming world!
I think this may be the funniest episode of the show. I laughed so many times throughout, but yes, especially at the beginning! Poor Gus! LOL.
This movie let me down. Natalie Portman's performance was absolutely fantastic, but I felt unusually disconnected from her character. The lack of personality was effective and realistic to a point, but as the story continued, I really just felt like I was watching a movie about a malfunctioning robot. Barbara Hershey was particularly amazing in her role and her scenes were my favorite. The final scene is also beautiful to watch. And just expertly crafted. I also liked how the music matches (and sometimes creates) the drama throughout the film, but overall, I am just not a fan. I'm glad that others have found something to love though!
This movie exceeded my expectations. The cast gave impressively honest and committed performances, and the direction was creative and interesting. The story and script are very simple, realistic, and relatable, but not completely predictable. There's some real emotion involved, too. And I also enjoyed the fun soundtrack. It is worth the watch (although I don't think I will ever rewatch). I recommend this film for fans of coming-of-age stories and/or basketball, and especially for young viewers of Asian descent. I will definitely keep an eye out for more from this director!
The ending was just wonderful. I've cried multiple times since finishing the series tonight. I will miss all the characters so much and I can't wait to rewatch someday!
I expected to rly like this one, but the story bored me and I found all of the characters to be pretty off-putting. I just couldn't enjoy it. I'm glad to know that others find it so inspiring though! And I am glad I finally gave it a watch, even if it wasn't my taste.
Yeah... Why'd I watch this? Just 'cause you can doesn't mean you should...
Ay, Lalo... facepalm S'all I can say.
