I didn't read the light novel, and it seems like it throws some jokes in there you'd only get if you read it.
Watching the anime only, it seems to abandon the plot completely in just a couple episodes, and then turns into a, frankly, pretty lame harem comedy. The later episodes to try to tie the plot back in do nothing of the sort, and you end up realizing you've wasted five hours that could have been spent watching something better.
This may be my favorite trek series. Seriously, it is giving TOS and TNG a run for their money. There are some continuity issues that don't make sense if you are a Trek fan, but if you liked the format of TOS and TNG, this is back to that formula with a much bigger SFX budget and technical capabilities.
Starts out pretty decent, but the main character becomes very unlikeable, the story unbelievable, and the show unwatchable.
I thought it was pretty good, continuing on with the themes from That 70's Show, and definitely better than the That 80's Show (which isn't saying much). Like the original show, Red and Kitty really steal the show at times. Mace Coronel does a great job as a slightly more savvy version of Ashton Kutcher, and I thought Reyn Doi was great as well. And of course it was great to see Wilmer Valderrama reprise his role as Fez.
The first episode was a bit rough, but the rest was quite enjoyable.
