7.8/10. Lots of fun here. I really enjoyed the balance of the mundane and the fantastical. Taking something as out there as a bunch of vampires living in modern New Zealand, and balancing it out with the interpersonal dynamics and tone of The Office made for a fantastic combination. What’s more, the special effects were surprisingly good, from the bat-to-bat combat between Deacon and Nick, or their Inception-esque fight in the hallway of the flat.
I also liked that everyone had something to do and a defined personality, which really made this is as much of a character comedy as it was something that got its yuks from the outstanding premise. Viago is a chipper dork and weak-willed romantic, which makes him sympathetic amongst the larger personalities around his home. Making him the erstwhile protagonist of the film was a nice choice that help keep things light and friendly, and giving him a love story, albeit a humorously fractured one, was a nice choice too that let the movie go out on a pleasant note.
Vlad worked well as a self-involved version of Francis Ford Coppola/Gary Oldman’s version of Dracula. Jermaine Clement was nigh unrecognizable and gave a great performance in the film. And the reveal that the infamous “Beast” who was the bête noir of Vlad was actually an ex-girlfriend he’s on bad terms with after a bad break up was a fun reveal.
Deacon was the real engine of the film though, abusing Jackie’s kindnesses and jostling with Nick as he feels the new recruit is taking his spot in the group. He created most of the conflict in the film (short of the amusing rivalry with the werewolves, which he was an instigator of) and even apart from his hilarious erotic dance, that made him and his slacker/napoleon complex character an entertaining and important part of the film.
I also really enjoyed the film’s mix of vampire lore and the prosaic day-to-day of everyday life. Bits like the vampires needing to be invited in to get into dance clubs, or putting newspapers down before harvesting a victim, or marveling at things like youtube and texting were hilarious deconstructions of the whole “immortals in the modern world” conceit.
Overall, it was a fun horror comedy, that derived most of its humor from the combination of its supernatural setup and its plot centered on the quotidian concerns of young men in the city. Much credit goes to the tone of the film, and it’s mockumentary style that helped ground the paranormal material in a funny, sundry day-to-day to sort of vibe. There’s something really fun about examining the little bumps in the road for larger than life figures, and What We Do in the Shadows has that in spades.
This movie is so friggin hysterical. Watched it July 1, night of the FOTC show in SB. I saw this last year but admittedly was a bit tips so I didn't remember much. Now I'll never forget it. Hysterical!!!!
A mockumentary at its best. Think Reno 911 with Vampires.... Watch and enjoy.
One of my all time favourite movies.
We're Werewolves, not Swear-Wolves
Hilarious comedy with a laugh around every corner. Some of the quotes from this film are going to stay with me forever and further shows how fantastic Taika Waititi's filmography is.
This movie was a great comedy! I usually don't laugh at comedies but this gave me some great laughs.
So I'm late to the show on this one and decided to watch it as it showed up suggested in Amazon Prime.
I was pleasantly surprised at how quirky and funny this movie was.
If you want a new movie comedy concept, it is worth checking out. Very funny indeed
What We Do in the Shadows, a flawless mockumentary in an otherwise flawed world.
This is hilarious and endlessly quotable. We need more unique movies like this.
Not to be ~that person~ but I enjoyed the book a lot more. The cast was amazing, I just think this story works better in book format.
This movie is god awful. The storyline is just terrible. It's a complete bore. And it's a shame that they waste such a good cast. The final act is just plain bizarre. The entire movie I kept thinking that I would rather be watching Rear Window, or even Disturbia.
did not watch, but thanks to the trailer I now already what to expect... another womyn desinfrenchised forced narrative .. so boring of this shit. They can't just make ripleys anymore, they have to make all men caricatured jerks first, totally one sided mind, blunt, so the womyn can thrive for their not recognized awesome perfect greatness that is never explained or can be improved, the hero is epic already. Another shity movie like enola homes to sell feminism to young girl
Story is ALL over the place! Absolute nightmare to watch. My God Chloe what happened?...
It started out great.... ended corny af!
Weird music choices too
What a ridiculous movie :rofl::joy::rofl:
A heavily feminist pulp action horror that does nothing to pull its ham-fisted metaphors and stilted message. If you’re OK to check your brain at the door, Shadow is worth seeing for the action set pieces and Chole literally fist fighting a man sized bat on a beach, but try and keep your eyes from rolling too hard during the almost suffocating “on-message” segments. Not bad, but far from great.
Just disappointing. The movie could have been quite ok, but does really every character need to be just trash? All of them? Really makes it hard to care if they live or not
I don't get it,is there hidden plot somewhere or theory, that will make us say wow that were good, cause the plot i just saw sucks and stupid to believe.
Not bad enough to be funny
Not good enough to be interesting
What a mess. Could not finish at all. It is for under 13.
Ridley Scot is back! After some less interesting movies he succeed to make an great one again! It isn't the greatest movie I have ever seen but I couldn't recall one fault or issues with this film. The acting was great especially with his carry Matt Damon! The rest of the cast did fairly good. Matt Damons character stranded on Mars and wants to find a way to survive until he is rescued. This is the main part of the film which was surprisingly funny. Mainly due to the optimistic attitude that Matt Damons character had. It was even funnier than some comedies I have seen this year. Besides that there are some really suspenseful scene with are handled very well by Ridley Scott. He build the suspense fairly slow but great. They also created a great setting of Mars, it really felt like a place which was gorgeously filmed.
Overall I would gave the film a 8,5 but unfortunately Trakt would allow me to give that many hearts so I rated it a 8. Simply because I liked my 9 rated films more than this one. Nevertheless I had a really good time with this entertaining, greatly directed and interesting film.
I absolutely loved the movie. The plot holes were almost negligable and as a whole it seemed to be.... realistic! This movie is Cast Away meets Gravity meets McGuyver.
The movie is way too unrealistic. No one plugs in a USB cable on the first try.
