The Iron Giant

Such a beautiful film, story wise and visually

American Fiction

While it took a while to get engaged, this film accomplished it's main goals (don't want to give anything away). This felt like it could have been produced 30 years ago and still be relevant. It's not flashy or fast paced, it's grounded in reality and it's slow in its pacing. It feels like I'm following an average man, mired in his black identity, while experiencing wholesome as well as heartbreaking moments.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Theres several scenes that look like "moving pictures" with the layout and direction. For most of the film, it felt like the typical young soldiers who become hardened by the atrocities of war (especially this one!). When there wasnt a war scene or the soldiers trying to steal from the farmer, I didnt really care. 1917 was much better than this film IMO, although if you are scrubbing it down to just the action sequences, then sure, its worth watching.

The Thin Red Line

The directing and cinematography are gorgeous. The music is also quite beautiful. Most of the film though is someone screaming about getting shot or nature b-roll with philosophical introspective narration. For 3 hours, it's long winded and doesn't pull me in like other war films. Not for me, but it's clearly cherished by others.

The Bear

I'm already fascinated by kitchens behind the scenes, but this shows acting and dialogue take it to a whole other level. I relate so much to the flaws of the main characters.

Babylon

The first half of the film is a masterpiece. The other half, starting at the snakebite, is all over the place, with an unnecessarily mawkish film montage at the end. I think dismissing this film is a travesty. This may be the Heaven's Gate of this current generation, but Damien's visually dense scenes are what keep me drawn in. If this was turned into a mini series, and the character development was more focused, this would have had rave reviews and accolades. Alas, this is a flawed masterpiece that should have had some additional script revisions in my book.

Batman

Childhood nostalgia fuels the rewatching of this film. Honestly, this film is starting to show its age. The dialogue is flat when Bruce Wayne is present, theres no chemistry between Basinger and Keaton, the sound mixing could be better with the low volume of the dialogue, and the lighting is not nearly as moody as its future sequels. But Jack Nicholson's performance is still a delight to watch. There are action scenes that intrigue me. And back in the day, this really did lay the groundwork for a moody, dark superhero movie to be in the mainstream.

Children of Men

What a beautiful, heart breaking film. Still holds up after all these years. Film making at its finest in regards to the visually dense and meaningful backdrops that contribute to the storytelling and world building. The only true flaw is Julianne Moore's acting and lack of chemistry with Clive.

7.5? Visually, this film is iconic and inspired so much (especially Mortal Kombat). It’s a fun, action filled film, although there were some moments that could have been tweaked that would have made this even better

The First Omen

I wanted to like this film, but it drags for most of the film, the dialogue is not interesting, and visually its not very strong. The ending was OK, even though it made no sense. The trailer sold this as a much more retro vibe!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Its touted as a classic, but it wasn’t laugh out loud every moment. It did have good pacing and content for being 90 minutes though.

How to Train Your Dragon

Watching it for the first time in 2024, some of the animations dont look as spectacular in 4k, but other scenes look great. The animation design isnt as bad as I thought it would be. A fairly simple story with a dragon that acts like a cat. Its a solid film, but its not as good as some pixar films when it comes to the script.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

I knew this was at least hoping to be a good film. I was hoping it would be amazing, but it didn't hit that mark. The lack of character development really holds this film back. The kill bill ending was a little anti-climatic, but the action sequences are the beard and butter of this film. Chris helmsworth did a fantastic job.

Batman & Robin

If you shut your brain off and make fun of the film with others, then it's not nearly as bad as some claim this is. While it's not quite so bad it's good, it's quite fascinating that it even exists. There probably won't ever be another film like this.

This film is starting to show its age production wise, but it's still a fun film to watch.

The Kill Room

While the mechanics and flow of this film kept me engaged, I never actually felt like there was ever any real point to this film. This was a great concept on paper, yet was executed in groundless, wandering manner. While Uma Thurman is not terrible, her chemistry with the bagman was Non-Existent. Well I found Samuel Jackson's character intriguing and a novelty, no one's performance or presence was important. Anyone could have starred in this film and would have got the same job done. I only watch this film because it was on an airplane showcase. If it's never brought up or mentioned again, I would probably not even realize this existed.

Im not even a fan of marvel, but this was actually quite enjoyable. A dose of nostalgia wrapped around an unfamiliar concept.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This was better than I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be crap, but its actually a solid script that character development and good pacing of the plot. The CGI is already starting to age, but being stuck on an airplane, this wasnt too bad.

Dune

Personally, for me, it was a snooze fest. I never felt invested in the characters. Also, several scenes that were devoid of any interesting set design. The costumes and music were awesome, but thats not enough to hold my interest.

Anatomy of a Fall

I wanted to like this film, but it got boring real fast and tedious to swim through the exhausting details the film has just recap with the family. This would have been better as a book, since visually there was nothing interesting going on.

Ive only seen praise for this film. It motivated me to give it a shot while I was on a plane. Honestly they did a solid job. Timothee is not a great singer, but I thought he did a decent job as a whimsical, nostalgic act. As far as I'm aware, most of this film is made up and not based on much from the book. Allot of the characters were delightful in their over the top acting. The songs themselves were even tolerable for someone who doesn't like musicals.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

This could have been a short film and would have been tolerable. Otherwise, I was zoning out after 10 minutes. Visually its just a sterile bland home and the concept of going viral isn't interesting enough to keep me engaged. Almost felt like I was watching someone's boring home movie.

Gladiator

I've always had problems with this film, mostly with Russel Crowe's stiff acting. There are some cool action moments and some great compositional framing at times, but at the end of the day I feel like this film is extremely overrated. While it may be accurate in the portrayals and design, it leaves me yearning to care.

River Wild

So due to the increasingly bad decisions of one guy, a whole group of people are jeopardized not only as accomplices, but led into technically treacherous rapids. Problem is the character development is pretty weak. The acting is pretty bland, and it feels like the climax doesn't really hit the mark. The last 30 minutes are the best parts. I watched it only because I was stuck on a plane with not much else to do.
