Haven't watched the other movies. In isolation, this is a movie about a man struggling with his priorities on what he should protect.
As my great uncle once said: It’s built on hopes and dreams, but none of its own.
Skip till the last 40 minutes and enjoy that part.

Love this movie. A bit slow, but the world setting and aesthetic is great.
Watched this on a hot summer holiday at my cousins when I was 15. Was a fever dream I won't forget... or maybe I will... not quite sure what was happening, but I loved the song used in the credits.
