This will sound crazy for most people, but I still think the man in black is a host. Think about it, Ford made Bernard kill Teresa because she was threatening his position as the supreme ruler of the park. But strangely, he doesn't try anything against Charlotte who is undoubtedly a bigger threat. That maybe because he's secretly controlling Charlotte's boss who happens to be... the man in black.

I do believe the man in black is old William. His back story about how his wife killed herself because she knew he was evil is true. But I think after that William went back to the park and threatened Ford to reveal everything about Arnold's death. William never knew that the "bug" that led Dolores to kill Arnold could be replicated at will by Ford. The man in black we know still doesn't see any of the hosts as a threat for his life.

So Ford had old William killed and easily replaced him by a realistic copy as he had plenty of personal data about him as William was a returning visitor.

That's why when the man in black threatened Ford's life directly, he wasn't afraid at all, knowing he had total control over everyone in the room, exactly like in the scene with Bernard and Clementine.

Also the sentient hosts keep telling the man in black "the maze isn't for you". Everyone thinks that's because he's human. But what if the sentient hosts could perceive that the man in black is a host on his loop, and not created by Arnold.
