Firefly plots and characters are inconsistent. Many constantly act contrary to their best interest. The 'threat' is a group of people portrayed so wildly, yet can still cooperate enough to pilot star ships. The costumes are bland and recycled. The anti-hero is gruff; he sometimes acts honorably, but is mostly sexist and too violent. The little sister character was completely unneeded. The pilot and sidekick had many passionate encounters without enough story to explain why they are committed to each other. Firefly is commonly rated positively because it is easy to turn off your brain and soak in the feel-good atmosphere. In the real world Firefly is a less than average, throw away, sci-fi television series. The network made the right call in canceling this show.
