Honestly, I love Watson. Usually these kinds of EQ/IQ dynamics have the emotionally intelligent person be rather average because they're there to provide someone for the audience to identify with, but while Watson does not have Sherlock's vast memory and eye for the smallest detail, she is still extremely intelligent and can follow his thoughts without trouble. And even beyond that, she's extremely aware of other's emotions, yet still remains respectful (e.g. while talking to Sophie Bishop she immediately left the topic of her family after Sophie asked her to, and she noticed Sophie's reaction to the mention of the coffee shop but she did not press the matter further) and calm. In fact, she seems like one of the most well-adjusted characters I've seen on TV. Part of the reason for this might be that she's very extroverted and at her best when she can focus on other people, and now that Shinwell's gone it's convenient that once again Holmes needs her help (something she missed by her own admission).
