“You only need to hang mean bastards, but mean bastards you need to hang.” The Hateful Eight is a suspenseful thriller from writer/director Quentin Tarantino. The story follows a bounty hunter who’s bringing a fugitive in to hang but gets snowed in at a haberdashery with a group of shadowy characters during a storm. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Walton Goggins, the performances are incredibly good. However, the pacing is rather slow and is weighed down by a lot of heavy dialog. Also, the directing exacerbates the problems with a lot of long shots, single takes, and a switch to narration in the second half. Yet despite its problems, The Hateful Eight is a compelling who-done-it mystery that’s full of rich characters.
