[7.4/10] Another good episode! This one engenders more smiles than laughs, but that’s alright. Low-key, character-focused comedy works for me.
My favorite bit continues to be the awkward relationship between David and Stevie. Her blasé but friendly bent toward him makes their friendship interesting, and she seems to have picked up on a certain...funkiness from David that I’m not sure even he is aware of. Their escapade in trying to sell his clothes is an amusing one, because it gives David the chance to be uptight and Stevie to offer her brand of low grade, well-intentioned snark. The “store it in the honeymoon suite” resolution with Stevie having wearing privileges, is a good seed the show can harvest later.
I also enjoyed Moira and Johnny worrying that they’re bad parents. The gag about them being unable to remember their daughter’s own name is some good, low-key humor. The whole family playing “two truths and a lie” spun out of control in a very amusing way. And I like the reveal that Roland and Jocelyn look up to Moira and Johnny as great parents despite their obvious shortcomings, given their own trouble with Mutt.
By the same token, the feint with Alexis thinking she’s discovered Mutt cheating on Twyla with Jocelyn, only for the show to reveal that Jocelyn’s his mom is a good one. Alexis’s “I’m trying to pretend I’m not into you, but I totally am” routine is a chuckle-worthy one, and it pays off here as the two do community service, especially her repetition of the word “handsome.” There’s a lot of nice, oddly realistic tics to the actress who plays Alexis’s performance of the moneyed party girl, and it works well in the contrast between this salt of the earth dude. The way they’ve both kind of disappointed their parents despite their very different approaches to life works as common ground for them.
Overall, another quality ep that continues to fill out the world of the show and, more importantly, the relationships between the Roses and the people of Schitt’s Creek.
