I took a long time before I got to this second season. I can't remember exactly when I watched the first season, but it was probably around two years ago. As a result I started this episode until the cold open and then had to pause it to read some extensive recaps to get myself reacquainted with this labyrinthine behemoth. I remembered really liking the first season because it felt so sleek and confident in itself. You don't really see too much of that in sci-fi these days. There's usually some piece of it that is more standard: comedy, romance, or detective work. There's a heavy dosage of mystery in Dark but it feels fresh because it wants to explore some of these concepts. It's almost as if Shane Carruth expanded on the mind-boggling nature of Primer and decided to develop something a bit more interesting next.

This is a good season opener. There's so much foreboding that it's palpable. And, as always, it makes me miss Germany.
