THE WACPINE OF ‘THOR’

CHARACTERS: 9

INTRIGUE: 8
NOVELTY: 8
ENJOYMENT: 8

The Good:

Thor holds a special place in my heart. This was the first MCU film I ever saw and it made Thor one of my favourite superheroes. His first solo film is not his best one, but it's a great mix of Norse mythology, science fiction and superhero action.

The first act effectively sets up Asgard and its inhabitants and gives us basic context, without feeling too heavy on exposition. The scenes set on Earth are the truly interesting and funny bits, as we see Thor having to accept his newfound situation.

I love the mix of futuristic technology and Norse history in the production design of this film. It gives Asgard a distinct look while fitting perfectly with the visual style of the rest of the franchise.

Chris Hemsworth is both dashing and funny as the Thunder God while Tom Hiddleston is spot-on as his devious half-brother Loki. It is Hiddleston's performance here and in The Avengers that makes him one of the better film villains of all time. Anthony Hopkins was born to play the mighty and booming Odin and fits that role perfectly.

Stellan Skarsgård, Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings make for a wonderful sidekick trio. They are among my favourite supporting characters in any MCU film so far. Portman is so sweet with Hemsworth and captures both the clever and beautiful side of Jane well. They have better on-screen chemistry than almost any other MCU couple.

All supporting characters are used well, particularly the Asgardians headed by Lady Sif during the battle with the Destroyer. The climactic sequence between Thor and Loki is tense and dramatic and contains some of the best actings the MCU has seen.

The Bad:

Despite its interesting mix of fantasy and science fiction, Thor isn't as memorable or exciting as Thor: Ragnarök or as dark and moody as Thor: The Dark World. The script builds up a threat slowly and remains predictable throughout.

Like Iron Man 2 before it, this is another slower film, focusing more on Thor's journey than superhero action. The build-up is so slow you barely notice it.

Kenneth Branagh is not an action movie director, which shows in the way he chooses to focus on the characters in an almost Shakespearian tale rather than typical superhero action. It makes the film somewhat slow at times but doesn’t affect the overall enjoyment much.

Unlike Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, who was introduced in and well used throughout Iron Man 2, Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye is nothing else than a pointless cameo that adds nothing to this film.

The Ugly:

Frost Giants that look like White Walkers from Game of Thrones.
