Here is a thought: Maybe try not to kill whole settlements then and factor that in. If she is a scientist in any field that matters to the problem (Sorry Philosophy, Arts, Gender Studies, etc. but you don't) she should know that it is impossible to make reliable models without a large enough sample-size. From what I've seen they don't have nearly enough people to gather a sample that large from enough points on the planet.
Cultures ability reacting to change differs. And I think one based on christianity might be the worst point to start from, since it is designed to actively hinder change.
