Boyz n the Hood 1991

Very good. It’s a little on the predictable side, but when your film is this emotionally complex and powerful it doesn’t matter as much. The characters and dialogue are compelling, the acting besides the few scenes with the little kids is excellent (Laurence Fishburne is a big standout; Ice Cube holds his own really well despite this being his first film), the drama is layered if a little on the nose at times (e.g. the final scene with Ice Cube could’ve used a rewrite, it spells out exactly what you’re supposed to think as a viewer), and the filmmaking captures early 90s LA perfectly.
